EcommerceBytes Fee Calculators for Online Marketplaces

Online marketplaces have established different fee structures and offer various payment methods, making it time-consuming for sellers to determine exactly how much it will cost them to sell on sites like Amazon.com, eBay and Etsy. EcommerceBytes introduced fee calculators in 2013 as a guide to help you evaluate the costs of selling on online marketplaces.

Amazon Fee Calculator

Amazon's fee structure is fairly straightforward once you understand the types of fees, and that's in part because payment processing is built into Amazon selling. The weight of your item can be a major variable in your fees.

Amazon charges Referral Fees (commission fees) and Variable Closing Fees and provides Shipping Credits. Fees vary by category and the weight of your item and depend on whether you have a Pro Merchant Subscription. (The Per-transaction fee is waived for pro merchants, who pay a monthly subscription fee that you'll have to factor in to your expenses yourself.)

eBay Fee Calculator

Remember when eBay fees were simple? Because of the complexity these days, you'll want to spend time making sure you enter all the data into the calculator correctly.

In general, eBay charges Insertion Fees and Final Value Fees (commissions). These vary by category and format (auction versus fixed price) and depending on if you have a Store (and the type of store). eBay also now charges its FVF commission on the total price including shipping costs. And if you qualify to receive a FVF discount, be sure to enter that into the calculator. eBay also allows non-Store owners to list up to 50 free auctions/month.

Etsy Fee Calculator

Etsy fees are fairly simple, but they do have a twist in multi-quantity listings. And you'll want to make sure you choose between Etsy Direct Checkout, PayPal or another payment method (yes, you can even accept checks on Etsy!).

Etsy charges a single listing fee that lasts 4 months. But for multiple quantity listings, you'll be charged a listing fee each time you sell an item. Etsy also charges a Transaction fee (commission fee). This calculator does not factor in Etsy's Advertising fees, which are completely optional.
