PayPal Launches Small-Business Solution in Europe

PayPal announced Thursday it has expanded its PayPal Here service to small businesses in Europe. Unlike the triangle-shaped PayPal Here card reader in the US, the new card reader for Europe works a little differently.

PayPal explained that the new PayPal Here device was designed to make it simple for cash-based businesses in countries that use Chip and PIN debit and credit cards (not swipe cards like in the US) to take and make digital payments. Paired with an Android phone or iPhone, it allows small businesses and retailers to accept secure payments anywhere, without requiring a computer or traditional point-of-sale equipment.

Like its counterpart in the US and other countries, the new device allows merchants to send invoices and receipts wherever they do business, as well as taking card and PayPal payments. And PayPal said it included a "click to call us" button in the app so merchants could reach its customer service team with one click.

To use it, businesses download the PayPal Here app and sign up for the device. No contract is required, and PayPal said it would announce actual pricing closer to launch.

PayPal will launch the Chip & PIN version of PayPal Here in the UK first. It will be available to select UK businesses over the coming months before it fully launches in the UK this summer. It will be available in other markets that use Chip and PIN after the UK launch.

More information is available on the PayPal UK website.
