PayPal announced the hiring of three vice presidents in the PayPal Technology group, one of whom will focus on small-business commerce. Arnold Goldberg is PayPal's new Vice President of Customer Experience Engineering. He and his team will "live and breathe consumer and small business commerce to conceive new technology solutions for PayPal's consumers and merchants."

Goldberg had previously worked at eBay Inc. for 6 years and was on its Architectural Review Board before leaving for LinkedIn and then Box, where he helped build a cloud-based content-sharing platform.

Goldberg said he sees PayPal's biggest opportunity as leveraging the scale it has amassed over the last 10 years and translate that into innovation and disruption across the whole ecosystem of payments. He said he was excited about what was happening in mobile and in the online/offline aspects PayPal is pursuing.

Koby Avital is PayPal's new Vice President of Architecture and Infrastructure. He comes from Microsoft, and will accelerate PayPal's transition to SOA and lead strategic architecture, infrastructure, and innovative research.

Ryan Granard is PayPal's new Vice President of Platform Engineering. He comes from DreamWorks Animation SKG, and he will be responsible for building internal cloud services.

PayPal had also recently brought on Bill Scott from Netflix and Doug Crockford.

PayPal's Chief Technology Officer James Barrese said that 2012 had been a year for testing and learning, and 2013 would be all about execution. "I can't tell you how excited I am to lock arms with everyone in the months ahead to drive PayPal's technology innovation to new heights. Personally, I'm ecstatic that PayPal is attracting innovative technology leaders from the hottest startups and leading edge companies in the world. There are exciting times ahead."
