Powerseller Says Amazon Strengths Are eBay's Weaknesses

One of the most significant voices in small-business selling to businesses has made a name for herself with a successful product. CEO Day Martin of Stand Steady was a featured panelist at the Amazon Women's Conference in August 2016, and is the voice of Amazon Business, a one year-old division of Amazon that caters to business customers.

EcommerceBytes asked Martin about her experiences in the B2B marketplace as an Amazon seller. One feature of selling there definitely stands out for her company, when compared to selling on notable rival eBay.

"We have sold on eBay from the very start of our business. We just found that platform lacking in terms of paid ads within the site, and also, it's getting so hard to sell anywhere other than Amazon, because (Fulfillment by Amazon) gets people their product in 2 days," Martin said.

"Hopefully eBay will find a way to compete with that soon, because it does have other features that make it an appealing place to buy and sell."

Advertising proved beneficial for Martin's Amazon business. "We rely on keywords both through sponsored products and in our listings. Amazon already has so much incoming traffic, and we just try to capture the audience and shoppers who are already there," she said.

All of this work comes with an eye on enhancing the customer experience, in an otherwise utilitarian business market. "I believe in telling a story through the photos, and being customer centric in everything we do," Martin said.

In the crowded online selling marketplace, a couple of skill sets helped Martin set her business apart from similar competition: committed product development, and data analytics. "We are really experts within our field on product development. Our best-selling products are not the white-label items, which we find on Alibaba. Our best-sellers, by far, are products I invented," she said.

"Product development is expensive and time-consuming, but it's rewarding in the end. On a personal level, because here is a product you invented and brought to market, solving a problem for your target audience. And on a business level, because these are the items with a higher margin and higher profit."

Martin also said, "One other skill it helps to have, is data analytics. This is helpful in understanding keyword performance, and month over month trends in the business." If that isn't your strongest skill, you might try to hire help in that area, she advised. "You really use it in every aspect of your business, and it helps to have an experienced team member with that skill set."
