USPS Works on a Fix to the Package Pickup Problem

Online sellers who rely on the USPS to pick up packages from their location were disappointed recently to find the service curtailed. As a reader told EcommerceBytes, "USPS apparently has discontinued scheduled pick-ups unless the sender has at least one Priority Mail (or higher class) package. In other words, sellers who use only First Class Mail, Parcel Select or Media Mail no longer have this service."

But the Postal Service told us the change was unintentional. USPS spokesperson Darleen Reid-DeMeo said it was caused by a system-wide update to the free package pick-up feature. "We anticipate that the update to reinstate First-Class Package Service as an eligible service for free package pickup will be available by the end of this month."

She provided the following workaround for shippers. "In the meantime, customers may still schedule their pickup requests by entering "1" as the quantity of one of the eligible items (Priority Mail, Express, Priority Mail, Returns, or International), and then entering the correct quantity of First-Class Package Service items in the "Other" box."

eBay, likely flooded by reports from sellers experiencing the problem, issued an announcement last week.

eBay offered its apologies and its own workaround for sellers printing shipping labels through its system, and said, "If you encounter any problems with this workaround solution, please reach out to us via eBay messages at @ship_like_a_pro and we will address the issue with the USPS."
