Etsy lovers began noticing ads for the marketplace on the Toronto subway in early February. "I'm on my way to work," wrote a user on the Etsy discussion boards. "Taking the subway in Toronto Canada. The subway train has Etsy ads all over it. Way to go Etsy! Glad to see the advertising."

Other Etsy users shared photos of the ads on Twitter.

"Say I love you with Etsy.com - Shop the online marketplace for handmade and vintage goods," ran one ad. Sellers of vintage goods will likely be pleased to learn Etsy didn't leave vintage out of the ads, as some believe the marketplace focus on handmade goods in its marketing messages.

Etsy spokesperson Sara Cohen confirmed the ad campaign via email this week, telling EcommerceBytes, "Yes, we are doing out of home advertising, starting with the Toronto transit system. We're not able to comment yet on results or future plans, but we'd love to talk to you more about this when we are ready."

Cohen referred EcommerceBytes to Etsy CEO Chad Dickerson's talk during the company's town hall meeting in February where he said, "we're not currently advertising on television, but we are advertising in other mediums, many of them online, so you can see Facebook ads, Google ads, etc. We're spending a lot more resources on marketing this year... we consider it part of what Etsy provides, to drive more traffic. So marketing in general is really important... we are looking at ways to raise awareness of Etsy."

When asked about the ad campaign Etsy ran during the holidays, Cohen said the campaign ran from early November to the end of December, and the videos had 19 million impressions around the world.

Stay tuned, and let us know if you spot other offline ads for online marketplaces.
