eBay CEO to Advise President Obama on International Trade
By Ina Steiner
eBay CEO John Donahoe will have the president's ear, so to speak, when it comes to international trade issues. President Obama appointed eBay CEO John Donahoe to the President's Export Council. Donahoe previously served as a Member of the White House Council for Community Solutions from 2010 to 2012.
According to eBay's announcement of the appointment, Donahoe will advise the president on policies and programs that affect U.S. trade, including opportunities to expand cross border trade opportunities for businesses that use eBay Inc. products and services. The company says 97 percent of commercial sellers on eBay export products, and it has been pushing to increase cross-border trade and focusing on emerging markets (particularly Russia and China) as an important part of its growth strategy.
Donahoe was quoted in eBay's announcement, "I'm honored to participate on the council with esteemed leaders of the international trade community. The face of global trade is changing, and it's exciting that in today's digitally connected world businesses of all sizes are exporting and helping grow the American economy."
The President's Export Council is comprised of up to 28 private sector members, including a labor representative, the heads of the U.S. Conference of Mayors and the National Governors Association, five U.S. Senators, five U.S. Representatives and 17 federal agencies.
Donahoe's wife Eileen Donahoe had been appointed by President Obama as the United States Ambassador to the United Nations Human Rights Council in 2010. According to her Twitter feed, she stepped down from the post in October.
According to eBay's announcement, "the President's Export Council advises the President of government policies and programs that affect U.S. trade performance; promotes export expansion; and provides a forum for discussing and resolving trade-related problems among the business, industrial, agricultural, labor, and government sectors. Other export council members include executives from Boeing, UPS, and Ford Motor Compnay (sic), members of Congress, governors, mayors, and various cabinet officials."
