PayPal is holding a press event this week in San Jose. PayPal President David Marcus will be giving attendees an exclusive look at the "new PayPal." The two-hour event will feature Marcus and will cover innovations and the problems PayPal is working to solve in store and on the go.

Asked if the event would feature a product launch, a PayPal spokesperson said there would be discussions of consumer pain points and PayPal solutions, but said he was not at liberty to answer questions about whether there would be a product launch at the event.

"We'll walk you through real-life consumer vignettes that show how PayPal is revolutionizing the retail experience and solving pain points. You'll see the latest PayPal innovations that make mobile shopping easier and simpler," he said - these include ordering ahead and skipping lines; and individualizing your customer service by "checking in."

At eBay's recent Analyst Day, Marcus said PayPal was taking a mobile-first approach; planned to reduce "customer friction" at signup; and said over the next three years, PayPal expects to double its business. Other PayPal executives talked about giving merchants more access to customer user data and creating unique experiences for the consumer, citing examples:

  • Offering PayPal mobile check-in. (You can tell the merchant that she is in your store, so you can collect loyalty points.)
  • Letting people order ahead on their mobile phone or tablet.
  • Letting people pay at restaurants without having to wait for the waiter.
  • Letting drivers "top up" their parking meter remotely.

The invitation to this week's event states, "Please join PayPal's president, David Marcus, for an exclusive look at the new PayPal, innovations for our customers and the problems we're working to solve online, in store and on the go." Breakfast will precede a 2-hour presentation.

Whether this week's event is a dog-and-pony show for reporters following the analyst presentation, or whether there's news to announce, remains to be seen.
