Buyers and sellers can now do business directly in-stream on the mobile photo-sharing platform Instagram using Chirpify. (Facebook acquired Instagram in April in a deal valued at $1 billion.) Chirpify already enables in-stream payments on Twitter / via PayPal.

Chirpify said its users can sell and fund-raise on Instagram one of two ways: using their Chirpify dashboard; or directly from within the Instagram app. From within Instagram they can post a photo and set the initial comment to "#InstaSale $amount," and Chirpify will automatically create a listing that people can transact with by commenting back. Fundraisers can list requests for donations by setting the initial comment to #InstaFund $amount. Chirpify will post back a comment on the photo that instructs followers how to purchase.

Consumers use Chirpify to securely connect their Instagram and PayPal accounts, and once linked, they can comment on an Instagram post to transact with "buy" or "donate," said Chirpify CEO Chris Teso. Chirpify then sends a secure download or receipt via email. (You can view a video of how the new service works at the main Chirpify site at Chirpify).

Chirpify's Instagram pricing starts at a flat 5% commission of the transaction, said Teso. "We have no monthly fee, no setup charges, no other charges," he said, adding that, "If you want an Enterprise account, which has a lot of different features like being able to export data, and a branded storefront on Chirpify.com, then you pay a monthly fee, which is on request."

"Today Chirpify took another step to decentralize commerce and payments across all streams from any device, whether a mobile phone or desktop computer," said Teso. "If people can't buy it in-stream, it's not social commerce. It's advertising."

"For individual sellers, tons of eBay and Etsy sellers are on Instagram, sharing photos of their items and pictures; so this is a way for them to monetize that," said Teso. Some celebrities, musicians and retailers are getting in on the act on both platforms as well: the company announced that shoe seller Bogs, actress and singer Kat Graham, tattoo artist Kat Von D, KEEN, the creators of KONY 2012 Invisible Children, and others will be launching their Chirpify social commerce campaigns on both Instagram and Twitter in the coming days.

"Our whole vision is to make transactions happen across the entire web; we're definitely looking at all the platforms," said Teso. "We want to make commerce and payments frictionless, and that's what we're doing right now on a couple platforms, and we're going to look to do that everywhere."
