Shoppers on eBay Australia poised to bid on an auction for books or DVDs may be distracted by an advertisement directly below the "Place Bid" button. eBay Australia is placing ads for FoxTel digital television subscription service on sellers' View Item pages. The ads are appearing in media categories and in the trading cards category, and it's not known whether such ads are appearing in other categories as well.

Since sellers pay insertion fees, they've long felt their item description pages are off limit to outside advertising. Australian eBay sellers are beginning to complain about the ads on the discussion boards.

In the US where eBay is designing a new View Item page, it is testing a new merchandising module that would display items from other sellers on the item pages.
