AuctionBytes.com released results of the first-ever survey of eBay drop-off stores. The survey, conducted in early January, was designed to give a snapshot of the state of the eBay consignment industry. The results are important, because franchises, entrepreneurs and eBay have made many claims about this business, but there is little concrete information available about the industry.

eBay drop-off stores sell items for consumers on a consignment basis. These businesses photograph, caption and list items on eBay then ship the merchandise for their customers, in exchange for a fee.

The AuctionBytes survey found that while 100 percent of franchises and large chains said the business has met their original expectations, only 51% of independent stores said the business had met their original expectations.

The average selling price (ASP) per item sold on eBay for customers varied, with the weighted ASP for independent stores estimated at about $75, while for franchises and chains, it was about $91.

The complete survey data and the accompanying analysis can be viewed online at http://auctionbytes.com/cab/abu/y205/m01/abu0135/s02 with an accompanying chart of results at http://www.auctionbytes.com/cab/pages/survey_consign
