Two Congressional representatives asked to meet with representatives of the major online auction companies to find out what they were doing about the fact that "auction fraud accounted for 64.1% of Internet fraud complaints" filed with the Internet Fraud Complaint Center. eBay CEO Meg Whitman met with the representatives yesterday and said that no federal intervention was needed, and asked that lawmakers give companies more time to create their own self-regulatory schemes. Yet Whitman said eBay was unable to come up with a technological defense against email address harvesting, a technique where companies gather email addresses from Web sites in order to send spam to consumers. Whitman asked that an anti-harvesting measure be added to pending anti-spam legislation. http://www.newsbytes.com/news/01/167354.html
