The New Cost of Selling Books on Amazon versus eBay

Dear Ina,
I know you have probably have written articles about this but I don't really pay much attention to Amazon and eBay fees because there is not much you can do about them, but I just compared the fees for a $11.95 book on both, and the way I see it, you pay just about twice as much on Amazon now, if you offer free shipping on both sites. Amazon is $3.59, eBay is $1.73.

This does not include listing fees on eBay 10 cents (or free with a store) and Amazon's monthly fee which is $40.00 and eBay's store which is $75.00 (for 1000 free listings).

So I guess eBay will see a huge increase in book listings in the near future, books will not sell as fast on eBay but I would guess the selling price on eBay is higher that Amazon about 70% of the time due to high competition on Amazon.
C.

Note from the Editor: Amazon changed its fees in the media category effective March 1st, which you can read about on this November 10th EcommerceBytes Blog post. Are you seeing the same impact as this reader?

You aren't comparing apples to apples.  Still Ebay is less expensive, but in Ebay's fee calculation you need to add in the PP fee.  Amazon processes payments, therefore their payment processing fee is inside the fees they charge you.

Ebay isn't the same way.  There is an Ebay fee and a PP fee.  You need to put those two fees together to compare to your Amazon fees.

With this fee increase, my Amazon sales net out at next to nothing. The mega-sellers with their auto repricing software are extremely difficult to beat on price.

Add in the removal of at least 25-30% of DVDs due to the $24.95 MSRP rule, and the many ''gated'' categories, and it is nearly impossible for a small seller to make good money on the River.

Because of these changes, my Amazon sales went from being triple of what I made on eBay to one-fifth of it. So, as least as my business is concerned, they have taken many steps backward.

1. on ebay, a fixed price listing has 3 possible costs depending on the store level.  The premier store price you quoted is incorrect as it is $.15 not $.10.

2. as pointed out you have to include the costs associated with Paypal as well which another 3.5 or 4.5%

and the time and cost of supplies to ship - which is an individual thing I can't calcluate for you but for me the boxes cost $.36 a piece and even bubble envelopes are $.25

It's not as cut and dried as it looks.

That said, I disposed of 700 books rather than pay LTS fees. Another 200 will go in the next round if they don't sell.  And all my new book listings will be in a new ebay store to lower my costs (since my current on is "over-sized for my alotment of listings.

All of mine will be cross posted to both those venues and a few others.  If they sell, they sell if not the charity shop at the corner will get regular infusions from now on.

Here's a headscratcher:  What is Ebay doing about Half.com, which is a book & CD selling site?  How about nothing.  I closed my Half.com account because nothing was selling (fees went to 14.9%).  The folks at EB don't have much creative thoughts when it comes to Half.com....like...turning it into a streaming & ebook site as well as a hard copy site.

As for Amz, at best I make about $10 a month in payments because of what the OP wrote - gated items, restrictions, etc. etc.  Not worth my time to have listings there.

I've found that dedicated sites and Ebay are the best but overall, we small sellers are going the way of the do-do bird.  Extinct.

Beth,
I did include paypal fee in my estimate: eBay closing fee is (on a $11.95 book) $1.08 and paypal is 65 cents for a total of $1.73. Amazons fees for the same amount of $11.95 is $1.79 for the referral fee and $1.80 & for the Variable closing fee $1.80 for a total of $3.59.

And with a premium eBay store the fixed priced listings are 10 cents each when you run out of free listings Auction listings are 15 cents.

$10 books aren't practical to sell anywhere, in fact i pulled all of the books i had up for $10 a few months ago and instantly saved $50 in ebay listing fees.

ebay may be cheaper once you have sold the book, but the listing fees are getting to be prohibitive to have a varied inventory.  on the other hand, i can list on amazon and not pay anything until the book sells.

I apologize, you're right on the fees for the over-limit FP listings.  (my eyes crossed when I looked at the chart, what can I tell you? LOL)   BUT we also need to allocate the "store fee" of $75 on ebay and the Pro Merchant fee of $40 a month on amazon as part of the costs.

Again, I like Amazon cause it's free till it sells.  But no more FBA for books for me. That hurt a lot to dispose of so many older htf books.

@beth

i don't list as a pro-seller, just as a standard one.  i don't sell enough books on amazon to make it worthwhile to upgrade.

i do agree though that any comparison of any sites fees must include all fees, not just FVF ones.
