eBay Won't Let Seller offer Discounts on Invoice

To the Editor:
After trying to offer a discount to a customer on an ebay invoice I discovered a problem. Seems you can add any amount to an invoice but you are not allowed to offer a discount except on shipping, insurance, and/or tax.

If you try to offer a discount you get an error that says "Invalid discount amount. You may only provide a discount on shipping, insurance, and/or tax." However you can add as much as you want. I verified this by adding to the invoice and deducting from it then previewing the invoice.

Thinking I could offer my customer a discount by sending them an invoice for an ebay item through paypal. I find you cannot do that either. Yow will get an error that says "The following eBay item number you entered cannot be invoiced using PayPal Request Money: <XXXXXXXXXXXX>. This item number will need to be invoiced from eBay."

Customers are getting harder to come by on ebay every day so I don't understand why ebay does not allow you to provide a good customer a discount to show them you appreciate your business and encourage them to buy from you again. but you can raise the price as high as you want.

I also found it interesting ebay says you can offer a discount on "Tax". I am pretty sure that discounting state or federal tax is a questionable if not illegal practice to say the least.

That's not quite correct.

You can offer a discount up to the total of shipping and taxes.

You can invoice any amount from Paypal if you just describe the items as "goods" and ignore the "ebay" choice.  Paypal then thinks you're sending an invoice for goods from somewhere else and the ebay protections don't snap into place.

I had the same problem.  You can go to the Paypal transaction page for that item and issue the buyer a partial refund at the bottom of the page.  Paypal and eBay charges are usually then given back to you on that amount.  At least I think so. You never know.

eBay does not credit sellers for any fee when a partial refund is issued.

eBay does not allow sellers to discount invoiced for one simple reason.... they want their full fees based upon the purchase price the buyer agreed to.

If they allowed sellers to please buyers with a post transaction discount on the item sold, eBay would then end up with a lower fee rake.

eBay is essentially telling sellers that if they want to discount an item, they must do so prior to the buyer completing the transaction.

You can also send an invoice via paypal by checking auctions other. That way when you go to the next page you can put in the ebay auction numbers. Just remember to click other when it asks for the auction site.

To offer your customer a discount should be your choice not ebays and you should be able to do it from the ebay invoice page and not have through paypal. The buyer shouldn’t have to pay the full price up front then get the discount in the form of a refund.

Ebay dictates how you must deal with your customers then holds you responsible if the customer doesn’t like the way they are treated.

The economy is slow, money is tight. If I get a good deal and want to pass the savings along to you the customer or I am in a position to save you some money ebay has no business telling me it’s not allowed. This doesn’t fit in with their story line about what a wonderful buying experience they want you the buyer to have on ebay. It fits in with improving ebays bottom line. Only someone working for ebay could twist this around, offer options, explanations and justify it.

Consider. If you buy my product and I decide to invoice you for half the price and ebay won’t allow it, ebay effectively has forced you to unnecessarily pay double the price. Which means paypal collects a bigger fee. What does that show they think of you the buyer?

If  free shipping is offered, no insurance is required and the item is not taxable A seller cannot subtract one single penny from your total but they CAN ADD ONE MILLION DOLLARS to it. Wonder why that is?

What it all comes down to.. is.. Money.. and  'HOW MUCH EBAY IS MAKING'

What 'RicRoe' wrote... is absolutely right !

I just checked my paypal account and I do have refunded fees credited when I've done a refund, in three recent transactions.  Maybe these are just paypal fees, though.

Thanks, RicRoe, with eBay the answer to everything is predictable: ''Follow the Money'' and the bottom line.  You like to think that those Pez dispenser people were thinking, hey, isn't this great, the whole world's an auction, and we created it.  How neat that people can visit in this global marketplace.  As late as 2 or 3 years ago when I joined in the fun, the eBay experience had heart.  And now the heart is gone.  Along with sellers and buyers.

When we sold on eBay, and had a customer we wnted to give a discount to we did one of two things. We either sent with their purchase a similar item at no charge or merely added a few bucks back with the purchase order. Our perspective on this was we wanted the buyer to realize the discount came from us and not from eBay.

eBay has sucked the fun right out. I used to sell and usually had about $1,000 in my Paypal account to make purchases. I bought with these funds all the time. eBay made it difficult for sellers. They kept changing the rules. At one point they made me get a Paypal Mastercard as a condition to list. So I finally had enough and quit selling. Since selling was the funding source for most of my buying, the volume of my buying went way down.

Without any Paypal balance left, I'd fund my purchases through my normal credit card. Suddenly, a few months ago, Paypal changed and only would let me charge my purchase to my Paypal Mastercard. They still wanted my other credit card on file, no doubt so they could do charge backs against it. I don't want to use their Paypal Mastercard. The terms are bad and it's another bill to pay, so that was the final straw for me. I no longer buy on eBay. It just became too difficult!

That's because you're not really sellers, you're vendors. Ebay is closing the loop on what you can and cannot do. Its going to be a bumpy ride.

A lot of eBayers rely on PayPal, so when it goes down, it can be devastating. Thankfully, there's an alternative. Stamps.com is debuting a free (for a limited time) eBay program that will keep your selling experience moving forward.

Stamps.com offers you a 10 percent discount on package insurance compared to the USPS retail rates. You can also insure packages up to $2,500 through Stamps.com.  ,. PayPal also doesn't let you use most of the Priority Mail Flat Rate boxes, but Stamps.com offers all sizes. Our program lets you import all of your eBay order data and tracks cost codes for you, so you'll know just how much you're spending on shipping and can be more precise when billing your auction winners.

I hope the sellers reading this will consider trying us out. Happy selling!

It's very annoying, there are many genuine reasons for offering buyers discounts (loyalty schemes, multi-buy offers etc).

The restriction on discounts has existed for years if not forever. You do have some options. Variations are supported in many categories and you can create different price-points. You could also mention bonuses in the description like 'buy 4 lots get 1 free'. In that case, you just need to make sure that you honor your deal.
