eBay Allows Single Seller to Dominate Search Results

By: Reader

Sponsored Link

Dear Ina,
Hopes this finds you well. I have been facing this in several of the categories I sell. And I wonder if you know anything about this as an upcoming change or maybe other sellers are experiencing the same thing in their categories.

When you do an incognito search, to simulate a buyer, the results are coming like this.

The first top 10 are listings all coming from the same seller.

In this particular case, my view was to show 50 listings. From those 50 listings, I got 41 listings from the same seller, VM Innovations.

So, they pushed me out of selling anything Moultrie, Trail Cameras, Game Cameras, Game Feeders, and now Security boxes too.  I guess eBay just want to sell from one Seller in the Hunting Category.

Could you share with other and see if they see the same thing?

And where do you see new sellers, smaller seller going with this shift, phase out of eBay completely?

I am sure Hunting is just the beginning, I see the same trend for walkie talkies, it is just a different seller in that case.

Thanks!
Olga

PS: BTW, eBay suggested that I take webinar to improve my listings. I already took all of them, and in my opinion, this has nothing to do with listing optimizations. eBay is obviously giving preferential treatment to particular sellers. And no listing improvement will help, even promoted listings is rigged. They will show the VM innovation listing, and then their promoted listing! Seriously. I just wonder what your take is and if other seller are seeing the same thing in their categories. Thanks!

I went to an estate sale and saw a group of medical devices that were in the new and unopened packages.

They were not marked ''Rx Only'', so, before purchasing, I researched on my smartphone to see if these items would sell on eBay.

There were many of them listed and selling. Great! Money making opportunity!!

When I went to list mine, the listings were pulled off almost immediately. Reason was that the Food And Drug Administration states they are illegal to resell. Fine. BUT THERE WERE OVER 100 OF THEM LISTED AT THE MOMENT!!

I called eBay, and explained that if ONE of these items are illegal to sell, ALL of them are as well. The rep claimed that ''we are actively pulling these listings off, but it takes time....''.

Baloney. The items that are supposedly against FDA rules to sell still remain. In fact, there are even more now than before. And who has them listed?? Most all the sellers are either using promoted listings, or have very high feedback scores. Hmmmm.......

I can see the rationale eBay has to favor large sellers. Someone can sell quantities of an item in the same space as a vendor who lists ''junk'' which languishes for months or years.

But wouldn't the LAW take precedent over eBay's bottom line, no matter who is offering a so-called restricted item on their site????

VM Innovations must be PAYING for PROMOTED listings.

They have 45 of the items on my page of 100 listings.

fleecebay is trying very hard to get rid of the small sellers.
of course some small sellers (cheerleaders) will still pay to get their items hidden.

VM innovations is an eBay beloved - plain and simple.

They are EXACTLY what eBay wants every seller to be - whether or not they can be/afford it.

They have THOUSANDS of items listed, they offer 1-2 day shipping on every item, PLUS 60 day returns.

I believe they are also one of the 600 "chosen sellers" that eBay had price protection/deal of the day relationships with.

These people and others their size are being pushed by eBay - but this kind of thing has been going on since 2007 - its hardly new.

eBay is pay for play - like your local "entertainment girl on the street corner".

Why spend time working with/pushing/supporting people who wont do as eBay wants? THAT is their theory.

This guy has over a million feedbacks (hidden on he main page btw)(another eBay game tactic) .... as for the rest of us who only have a few thousand .... "oh well... guess its too bad".

But THAT is "your partner" right there ...

Now where did that idiot Bob run off to?

@pace ...if you take a deeper look VM Innovations is based in Nebraska and sells Amazon, Walmart & on eBay.

Most likely as with eBays growing stock photo darlings they are drop shipping  FBA out of Amazon.

eBay has figured out  using their platform as drop shipper base, offering any buyers who come to their site a glossy experience is a no- brainer.  The problem is - eBay buyers of these items are paying more than they have to as these drop shippers add 12.9% or more on these items that will get delivered by Amazon.

This week Lawton announced major advertising schedule telling buyers to ''Check eBay'' -

I bought an electric lawnmower on Amazon for $64.99 with a Free Ship, delivery in 2 days.  I ''checked eBay'' - same stock photo listing with Free Shipping ...lowest price $84.99, next $118.99, next 134.99.  All with ''multiple locations'' aka Amazon.  This is the diirectiom eBay is taking for the site.  while most buyers go direct to Amazon, eBay will spend millions of $'s advertise to con/abuse the few buyers left who will check them out to maybe collect a fvf out of it.  Just trust, Amazon is a click away and once a scammed eBay buyer sees he/she paid more for exact same item, from exact same seller ...they won't go back to eBay again.

Bezos will also put a stop sooner than later for eBay sellers highjacking their Prime free shipping program.

I don't know why eBay needed to bring on a head of seller experience - as to where is Mr. Bob ...he's probably busy shopping for a black shirt on Amazon.  Bob, now that you're working for eBay, you must know,  a black shirt is needed for your style shot.

eBay has lost its soul.

By the way, Olga,  the OP, sounds like she/he works for eBay.

There is a site called trustpilot that publishes online seller feedback.  VM Innovations has lousy feedback.  Certainly not 5 stars.  Yet eBay puts them front and center for their ''valued buyers''.

We have Mr, Bob with no returns.

We have his boss , Hal Lawton,  selling loss leader stock photo brass coat hooks for $1.79 with free Priority Mail shipping that costs $5.85 - do the math folks - he's losing money with each one he sells plus he gives away $10 free eBay gift card.

This is the ''selling experience'' of eBay.

Shopify integration....because as we all know, eBay needs more sellers.

eBay just wants to rake in fees. That baloney about "seller partners" is just that.

@toolguy - the lawnmower is SunJoe has 1600+ positive reviews on Amazon.

If you search by brand name electric lawnmower on eBay - you'll see only 1 listed.  Now if you RE-Search with just electric lawnmower you will see about 8 listings for SunJoe.  As we all know - listings shown will vary by your location.

Yes, on the gift card.  I think eBay execs selling on the site must get them for free - I know I can't afford to give them to my buyers.  The problem is I seldom buy on eBay as I get too frustrated with eBay search.

I see mostly "VM Innovations" and "Focus".  Those names show up - as special logos -
despite the fact that I DON'T have "Seller Information" checked in my Customize options. AND - when I try to set that option, it would let me check it, but didn't keep it set!

And funny thing - many of the listings that appear WITHOUT seller name say "Sponsored" above them, but the VM and Focus listings DON'T say "Sponsored."

@trying - most sellers are on all 3 platforms (or should be - I encourage it) eBay, Walmart/Jet, Amazon.

I only use PRIME to ship to a buyer, when I get caught 1 pc short for something and only Amazon has it, as I stock everything I sell. Im not a "lister" who lists 20k items that they dont have.

I do know ALOT of people who DO use Amazon to ship that way - Im assuming that its simply easier, cheaper then shipping it yourself .... and you get back some of your PRIME fees (lol).

Amazon IS fixing it all - they just raised their shipping fees .....

I think eBay Should consider and be pushed into spinning off the used business into a seperate Site.  "eBay USED" only.  This idea would create another billi9on dollar company and only allow used items to be sold.  not new with tags. overstack direct from factory, drop ship from Amazon.  go chase the the brass ring in the new world and hel the 10-20% of your existing company to florish before it disappears on this site.  PS I would like a 6.15% commision for the idea.

After 15 years as a power seller (and TRS since its inception)... I am gone... once they shoved me back in search... it was no longer worth the effort. My Jet / Walmart sales replaced eBay... and I am sure I am not alone. As a buyer, I no longer shop eBay either....entropy ... it takes a long time but the handwriting has been on the wall forever.... just like Kmart and Sears.... slow slow death.

^^
Amazon has a "report a problem" link and I use it religiously.  When I see a product that is miscatagorized (books in cell phones).
I suggest everybody write a letter to Bob Kupkens(?) of seller experience, as I do, and list all those irritating things that need changing.
EB must get about 5 letters a week from me; cc: Devin Wenig.
Ironically, I get calls and letters replied.
Also write the BBB, that gets EBay's attention really quick.

I'm similar to glasspackaging above, a 17 year powerseller now off ebay entirely for over a month. Sales are down, they always are in the summer, but not significantly. More importantly to me all of my other channels continue to grow. The final straw for me was an unambiguous textbook example of a retaliatory fb that they assured me they would remove and refused to remove both. My $10K a year in fees no longer goes to ebay and I am very happy about that. I loved ebay a long time ago, but their unmitigated contempt for the sellers grew to be too much.

Ebay is and has been playing games for a long time - I had a hand made item listed in my "smaller" store. There was about only 13 like (exactly) items listed on ebay - however over 1,000 similar items listed. Mine was sterling (the other 13) Ebay yanked it immediately. Like others I called ebay to complain and was told the same line of bull crap that they were getting to that other 13.  That was 4-5 months ago. Of the 13 listed 5-6 still remain from one single seller. His feedback rating - here's where I find it interesting - his is over 13,000+  Mine on that little store is only around 350+ - ebay playing favorites again? Sure - I could have listed the item under my Big store - 10,000+ feedback and I often ponder if that would have made a difference but I won't do it because I was threatened with permanent ebay suspension for life if I tried to relist that item. Meanwhile that other seller who is selling Drug paraphernalia on ebay is still up and running (fyi - sterling silver hand made Victorian roach clip) $125 - go ahead search ebay for a sterling silver roach clip and see what you get.
