Amazon Refunds Buyer Despite Seller's Policy

By: Reader

Sponsored Link

Dear Ina,
I recently sold a product on Amazon. It comes in a pack of 6. After the customer received his package he complained to Amazon and was later refunded the money.

In the legal disclaimer of the listing I stated: All sales are final we do not accept returns. All items are sold as is.

The customer received exactly what was ordered. The items were brand new from factory sealed cases.

The customer gets to keep the product and was refunded (over $100). Amazon now says I owe them money. I have decided to STOP selling on Amazon.

I don't think you can have a No return policy on Amazon that can be enforced.  I know you can't on Ebay.  You can say it, but it does not make it true.  I know it is frustrating.

Marie is %100 correct.

“YOUR” return policy is what ever amazon says it is - since you don’t sell on Amazon, you fulfill “

3rd Party Amazon sellers can not have policies that are more restrictive than Amazon's as Marie and pace said.

Should have spent more time reading the rules. And, if there is a doubt due rule interpretation, he said they said, confusion, and other hazy type of disputes -- Amazon will almost with few exceptions rule in favor of the buyer.

''K'',

You just learned what everyone who sells on Amazon eventually learns. There is NO SUCH THING as no returns on the River due to their A to Z Guarantee policies.

In fact, savvy buyers will ask for a return on every purchase knowing that if a seller flat-out refuses, they can file an A-Z claim and keep your merchandise and your money.

Savvy sellers will call the bluff of the buyer and tell them to go ahead to return the item. And if it is a remorse return, a 20% (unopened) or 50% (opened) restocking fee can be charged.

The customer must also be informed of this in a professional manner. Once they do the math, most decide that it would cost a great deal of money to end up with nothing, and do not pursue the request any further.

I'm so glad I don't sell on that venue, don't buy there either.

I don't venture down the Amazon. . .

If you need to know where eBay is headed on returns - and where they got the bad ideas they DO have on returns - this is it.

Amazons view "on life" is give the buyer ANYTHING and then they will come back (eventually) and buy more from you. The issue of course is that alot of times its THEIR money they are gambling with. On eBay its YOUR money - all of the time.

Amazon at least owns warehouses, truck, planes etc and makes things (kindle) ... eBay just funnels the money overseas.

Just buy another one from Amazon and switch it (DO NOT DO IT TO A FELLOW SELLER) and make it Amazons problem .

But it's been the case on Amazon for almost ever that sellers cannot have a "no returns" policy.

"The River" is no place for small sellers - they either drown or are eaten by crocodiles.

OP/READER:

Remove your credit cards from your Amazon account and close the bank share that you have hooked up for deposits ASAP.  Scamazon will swing around in the next 2-week period and STEAL the money if you don't.

The above works if you're done with Amazon - as a seller _and_ a buyer.  Once they steal from the former, you're much more motivated to find alternatives to the latter.  Frankly, anybody that still wants to sell on Scamazon after examining the ludicrous fee schedule and the ever-changing TOS requirements (that absolutely do not guarantee victory in an A2Z) should just take a page from the Chinese playbook and open multiple accounts under separate aliases and discard them as they attract Scamazon's resident grifters.

Amazon's getting large enough to not needing 3rd party sellers.

They've become more of a burden then a profit to them. . .

@Tool

Absolutely correct. They manufacture and warehouse a great deal of their merchandise, and do not need 3P sellers to stay in business.

The same attitude is portrayed by their competitor who manufactures or warehouses NOTHING. The powers that be at eBay seem to have no clue what a good thing they have going.

There are millions of sellers who have ready-to-sell goods listed and warehoused in their own homes and garages. And eBay pays no rent for the storage space, and does not have to hire help to pick, pack, and ship. Heck, they even charge a great deal of money for the privilege!!

Instead of running their customers (sellers) away, they should embrace them like Wenig has mentioned since he took over the eBay reins. We are still waiting for this site to become more seller-friendly.

And, no, Devin, brands will not line up to sell their items through your site, although you may see this as the future. Just ask Toys 'R Us.

A 3P seller on Amazon has to have a return policy either the same or better than that of Amazon's. No returns is not allowed.
Always accept the return, then handle the issue if it is returned.
If you stay, you will soon be on forced returns (where you pay for everything) and handle refunds if you get it back and have to beg amazon for refunds if you don't.  You may want to leave. I would not blame you.

I go to Amazon for the reviews. If I like what I am researching I'll try to find it directly on the seller's website or I'll buy on eBay. I am but a nibble of a tiny toothless carp in corporate behemoths yet I feel empowered by not patronizing these global colossal entities.

Until sellers themselves demand return of the item or items bought online and file written complaints of fraud by buyers who keep the item and name the venue who is aiding an abetting in the fraud with the proper federal authorities by the thousands every month, there will be no changes made. Fair Trade should demand that if you want your money back you have to return the item in the same condition as was sent to you.

Amazon keeps building warehouses and hiring people, but with its restrictive returns policy and guarantee shipping policy, they're going to PO most of its 3P/FBA sellers who will take their products back to the garage and ship.  AMZ is depending more and more on 3P/FBA sellers, at the same time it's gating products.  The wheel will turn the other way if they keep up their nonsense.

@Toolguy, I disagree.  Unless you mean this -- that their warehouses will be shipping name brand items like P&G, General Mills, which means that the OEM will use Amazon's warehouse distribution and not their own to distribute & ship items.  I don't see that happening, because then you have no control over quality control and returns.  Plus, it may not be cost efficient to house with AMZ (like their web service).
However, I can see AMZ building the warehouses for International/global 3P sellers.

So you sold on Amazon without thoroughly reading the terms and conditions? Amazon is not Ebay and vice versa. Surprised you lasted as long as you did on the River. It's not for the faint of heart. Or the negligent.

Ah, yes, when Amazon changes small parts of their ever-expanding weasel-worded TOS without any notice whatsoever, that's seller "negligence."
