Postal Service Prioritizing Amazon Packages over Regular Mail?

By: Reader

Dear Ina,
After reading your article yesterday ("Shipping Delays? What Shipping Delays? Carrier Confidence Continues"), I thought I would let you know I have had customers writing over the last week about 8 missing packages dating back to December 7.

I opened cases for all of the packages. A USPS post office from a small town in Oregon contacted me regarding one of the packages.

He told me that USPS is running 10 - 15 days behind on 1st class mail. He said USPS has been "slammed" by all of the packages this year and they simply haven't been able to keep up. He also said that most of the missing packages should show up within the next week or so. They haven't been able to handle the volume because they have never been this busy.

He also said Amazon Packages are taking first Priority because of the money they pay, followed by Express Mail and then Priority Mail. 1st Class packages are handled last, thus the 10 - 15 day delay.

It was very refreshing to have someone who was actually candid and honest about their issues so I could relay this information to my customers.

Having USPS act like everything is just fine when you know they are having issues because you have a number of missing packages is much more frustrating than having someone give you honest answers.
Cathy

They seem to give China a sweet deal, so why not Amazon?

My mail carrier also confirmed that Amazon packages have priority over everything else.

No Amazon package is to be left behind, even on Sundays.

She also told me that the Post Office is losing money on Amazon packages. Don't know if that is a fact or her opinion.

My own personal experience is that every Priority package I mailed in December got to its destination ON TIME. (I checked tracking status.) My First Class parcels/letters have taken about the correct time in transit.

I am not sure how to otherwise ''prove'' that Amazon packages are given any preference, since my shipments got where they were going when they were supposed to.

I can't say nationally, but our local post offices were directed to be open between 5am and 7am for the Amazon packages to come in, adding 2 work hours to the clerk's workday, which required a lot of staff juggling time. The only reason for anyone to be present in the building during those 2 hours was to receive the Amazon delivery, although I'm sure many dedicated clerks did other work too.

Well, maybe that is giving Amazon ''priority,'' since the Amazon truck was arriving before the USPS truck? Certainly the Amazon packages could not just be dumped with no security at the back door until someone arrived at ''regular'' time, and my understanding is that the early hour is what USPS and Amazon worked out. So yes, clerks could start processing Amazon parcels earlier than their regular USPS delivered ones.

USPS already is working with FedEx and UPS. (Thank heaven they appear to have gotten that UPS ''Basic'' service fixed where the shipper demands a street address to which UPS delivers and the USPS is then supposed to complete the delivery -- except I do not get mail delivered to my home, I have a PO Box in a totally different ZIP code!)

Why should USPS not work with Amazon? It would be stupid not to with so many people jumping on that bandwaqon and every item ordered has to be shipped.

This may be more of a local USPS issue.  While my local post office has reported significant increase in package volume this year.  My customers seem to be getting their stuff on time including first class packages.  One problem USPS faces especially in rural areas is the mail carriers do not have vehicles large enough to accommodate the increased volume of package shipments.  UPS has big brown trucks for a reason....Most local mail carriers around me are driving small cars like Subaru's to deliver the mail.  Quite frankly the there is just not enough space in these vehicles to deliver a large volume of packages.  One of the counter clerks told me some carriers had to return to the post office 2 or 3 times in one day to reload on packages due to the volume this year.  These are carriers that are normally in the post office once in the morning to pick up and return the next day.

I haven't heard from any of my buyers that they didn't get their items on time. The majority of what I sell ships as a First Class Package, and starting two weeks before Christmas I was warning all my buyers that they would most likely not receive their purchases before Christmas (I even asked a couple if they would like to cancel their order). Amazingly, I heard from several that their packages did arrive before Christmas. So I don't have any complaints about the USPS.

Fortunately I haven't experienced this problem either.  My customers all got their packages before the Holiday that was suppose to get them before the Holiday.  For me, USPS did a fantastic job.

I did have 3 packages that were problematic. one Priority and 2 First Class. All were mailed way ahead of the Christmas rush. One got resolved fairly fast. The other two I opened cases for. In both of those cases, they did arrive before Christmas, but not before a lot of white knuckle time of the buyer and myself. I spent a lot of time emailing back and forth with the buyers, and they were nice throughout it all, and happy in the end.

Everyone who believes that all packages are handled equally should try picking them all up at one time. There's a finite amount of space in any bin, crate, or trailer. When it's full, the excess is pushed to the side - not for the next truck - but for whenever today's mail is loaded on that route and there's space for yesterday's, or last week's, mail. It's not FIFO or LIFO. And proof of the pudding is that NetFlix DVDs are culled from the rest of the day's mail collection and shipped out in in its own bin - daily. If that's not priority for bulk media mail then nothing is. Sorry, but equality is an aspiration; not a reality nor a requirement.

A PO "funny"---while I was mailing a package to--shocker!!!--China!!!--last week -I was at the PO doing the Customs forms and a woman came in  and declared loudly that she had mailed a card "Stuffed with cash"  to her brother in NC two Saturdays before.  And that it had NOT arrived.  And WHAT was the PO going to DO about this.
.
The Clerk explained that the woman needed to have some patience; that the PO system was backed up several WEEKS. The customer was not happy and the Clerk asked if she had sent it Priority or with some sort of tracking---which the woman claimed she HAD but of course she had LOST the receipt.  The Clerk repeated several times that the "System"  was backed up for weeks---as I turned to leave I saw several people with STACKS of Priority Mail boxes balanced in their arms staring at the Clerk in utter horror.  Ebay shipments?  Late Christmas gifts?  Who knows.

The customer followed me out muttering about how stupid she was to send CASH in an envelope---

Can't say I disagree.

All my Priority, First Class and Parcel Post packages for both November and December got to their destinations on time and many almost overnight. I am pleased with the Post Office this year. As for Amazon getting priority over everyone else, that is a troubling thought. If Big Brother CEO can crack a whip at the USPS and make them jump, I think we need a new Post Master General. Keep your Congressmen posted on what it going on with the Post Office. Insist on change and equal cost of all who use the service including International sellers. Dump the UPU.

Is that legal?  To put one company's shipment over another company's?  For example, Walmart.  Do they get any priority service?

I just did a quick check of what I shipped out on the 21st and saw that the US mail got there quickly with time to spare if it had been a present. Even a parcel going to the UK got there within 8 days which I think is tremendous at this time of year.

I have received mail on Sunday that were Amazon packages and the interesting thing to me is that I do reviews for Amazon and these were items that I needed to use and write a review within 30 days. I didn't need exceptionally fast shipping.

I am ebay seller 18 years and 30 year postal employee - absolutely post office gives Amazon highest Priority. They will go way beyond and they even sent out delivery persons on Sunday's for Amazon. If you had a non-Amazon packaged delivered on a Sunday it was only because it piggybacked on an Amazon package.
