Did eBay Forget Memorial Day?

By: Reader

Dear Ina,
I have become used to seeing all sorts of decorative banners atop eBay pages when there is a special day or holiday. I seem to recall that even foreign celebrations, such as Cinco de Mayo, are the subject of attractive banners on each and every eBay page.

Why, then, on this most solemn of American holidays, Memorial Day, does eBay see no need to recognize the fallen servicemen and servicewomen with a banner atop their pages?? Were it not for the tens of thousands of gallons of American blood shed for freedom, eBay wouldn't have the "right" to be such a successful and rich American company!!!

Cinco de Mayo - YES!! Memorial Day - NO!?!? Why? Is it because eBay sees no sales to be made as a result? Is it because dead soldiers aren't potential buyers? eBay should hang its corporate head in shame. It would seem that honoring our fallen soldiers isn't politically correct, or profitable, in eBay's corporate eyes!

eBay should be ashamed, but that's an old-fashioned, out-of-style 1950s emotion.

God Bless America!
John

How about why doesn't ebay LOOK AT A CALENDER and ADJUST estimated arrival times because of Federal Holidays where the Post Office is CLOSED??
How about giving sellers an extra 24 hours to ship and UPLOAD TRACKING INFO when there is a FEDERAL HOLIDAY??
This is what sellers want to know- these idiots at ebay need a CALENDER.
Mass. Howler
(I just spoke to CS agent ''Maria'' at ebay and she said YES, ebay has made the adjustment- Then I call back to make sure as I need to upload tracking numbers and the next CS at ebay said NO, no adjustment (I sent Ina the conversation # so she can ask Joanna Hoff about it)- This is a great example of the CRAP we sellers deal with ALL THE TIME- AND EBAY RATES US???!!!

John Donahoe only cares about the Chinese. The hard working Americans and their family members who have made sacrifices to allow businesses like eBay to flourish are only an afterthought to ex-Bain 1%'ers like the Ho.

@mass - they don't count holidays or weekends (including saturday).

It is surprising that ebay didn't even put up a little flag for the day (like Google did).

Apparently, no one in the management ranks at eBay gave a thought to raising a flag to show respect for those who gave their lives for their country.

If eBay can not monetize it they do not recognize it.

This intentional slight to our greatest heroes shows eBay Corp apparently believes there is no profit in patriotism.

Ebay is only after kissing Chinese and foreign butts.

They will do anything for them BUT not for the USA. Ebay has made a great effort to support China in all things like special listing deals, special rates and special shipping agreements but not the USA.
And they do not support the US troops or citizens of the USA. Not even a mention of the US holidays, but any other country's holidays are promoted by ebay with banners and email.

Sometimes I think that JD is from a another country or another planet for that matter.

Not recognizing the holiday (and the underlying sacrifice many men and women have made for this country) is clearly a mistake, but I do think some of you are blowing it out of proportion. While definitely "not enough", the link I included is to the "Honoring Our Heroes" page on eBay, which was featured on the home page when I found it. Again, not enough, but definitely something they were doing to support our troops/vets.

OP John - It is a fact that Cinco de Mayo is celebrated more in the U.S. than it is in Mexico. I have a lot of complaints about eBay, but failing to recognize a U.S. holiday with a banner is not one of them. If someone wanted to honor our war heroes, the last place they'd be on Memorial Day is eBay.

eBay sees itself as a 'global' community which includes Communist China in a big way. It's possible that eBay didn't want to offend others in the global community by remembering the war dead of the United States which has a very 'tricky' relationship with that Communist country.

Hi John,

I saw your letter and want to make sure you're aware of all of our Memorial Day activities. Honoring our Heroes, a fundraising campaign, has been running since May 14, and has been featured extensively on the homepage of eBay Giving Works [ebaygivingworks.com], eBay's charity fundraising platform; in the media [exm.nr/KGKy6c]; and nearly daily on eBay's social media channels [facebook.com/EbayGivingWorks]. In fact, Ina Steiner wrote about it [bit.ly/KcFgcC] on May 15. Thousands of people -- including eBay employees -- have honored their heroes on eBay through small (and large) donations to nonprofits they care about, by sharing their personal stories with us on social media, and by working hard to make this campaign happen. The campaign will end in a few days, but today, we are proud to report that we have already raised tens of thousands of dollars, including a donation from eBay, for our nonprofit partners.

Warm regards,
Greg Pedone
