eBay Solicits Buyers to Leave Product Reviews

By: Reader

Dear Ina,
I recently received this message from eBay regarding an item I had purchase:

"We'd like to hear about the product you bought from eBay. Did you love it? Hate it? Something in between? Tell us all about it!

By writing a product review for eBay's Reviews & Guides, you'll help other eBay members make informed buying decisions about that product.
http://reviews.ebay.com

Here are a few things you may want to include in your product review:
- Why you bought it
- What you like most about it
- What you dislike about it
- Whether or not you would buy the product again

Remember, this is your product review. Use your own words and style, and have a little fun with it.

Get started now. Write a product review for (item I bought)"

I sent them a scathing reply saying I had not purchased this item from eBay, but I had purchased it from an individual seller.

Am I overreacting or what? Is this a new message? And I doubt anyone has read my reply since it's probably sent out automatically.
Thanks!
Pam

I think it is an over-reaction.  While they certainly should not have used the words "from Ebay" but "on Ebay", other than that, it's really not a big deal.  They are just trying to get more members to fill out product reviews.  Keeping seller reviews completely separate.  It's not a big deal.  You can choose to participate or not to participate.

You're definitely overreacting on that. It's just a standard "Hey, you wanna review the thing you got recently?" e-mail. Nothing else. Relax a little instead of thinking everything is an attack.

I don't think it's an over reaction...check out this odd fb from a new buyer

Fast shipping, very nice product. Only negative is product smelled of smoke

First of all, these were MIJ ceramic elephants...and I don't smoke.Maybe the postal driver was?

If they loved them and the service, why add a negative comment?

This is a new buyer with only 2 fb (I didn't give them one).
Who told them to review their purchase like this? It sounds like it was prompted to me.

@erratic*attic

You're joking, right? That seems like a regular customer feedback to me. To the customer, it smelled like smoke. Whether or not you smoke or not doesn't change that the customer smelled smoke.

Also, this is a PRODUCT REVIEW e-mail, not a feedback issue. Notice the link in the e-mail?

Consider this: ebafia intentionally calls buyers THEIR buyers, not the sellers' buyers.

This communication simply is another example of ebafia's continuing campaign of presenting and reinforcing incorrect information (aka LIE).

They are OUR buyers, not ebafia's!

Yup, sounds like normal feedback to me... 98% brought down to 96% because of this lovely feedback left recently... The few negs or neutrals we have had are pretty much directed at the product, with no prior contact.

Rating 1 - The items arrive in good time & good condition, but the product fail to do what it said, its not water proof & the seal came off just a week after I got it, which I beleve cause it got water under it & it dont reflect the light for cars at night, so I wouldnt recommend this product!

And here's a funny one!
Rating 4 - Received item very quickly. Have not used it yet, but will soon. Will leave a feedback when I do. I can't give 5 stars since I have not used the product yet.

I think the buyers get confused, to be honest. They are pestered to leave feedback, pestered to leave reviews. So many of our good feedbacks are not based on us as the seller, but rather the items they purchased.

Like this one.. Rating 3 (neutral) Not good at all

I'm still stumped, did they think we were not good or the product was not good? Leaning towards the product... LOL!

Or this one.. Rating 4 The item was not what i ordered, but it was just as good. i was pleased with this item. (In this case, packaging was changed, product was the same...)

I wish feedback would be done away with and percentages put in place based on performance.

I do not read user reviews and as such I do not leave  product reviews when eBay asks.

I do not get a review request for every purchase, as such when I do get one I am instantly suspicious. What I do with those invites is report them to eBay as a spoof email.

I don't think this was an over reaction either - Pam is absolutly correct - she did not buy anything from "EBAY" she bought something from an independant merchant selling on ebay - I think it's just one more example of ebay wanna be Amazon - imho of course.
