eBay Takes over PayPal Shipping Labels again?

By: Reader

Dear Ina,
At the stroke of midnight, eBay once again started pushing shipping from PayPal over to eBay and just like the November fiasco, they have done so without offering sellers the courtesy of an advance announcement. I guess they did not want sellers to have advance notice because they know how many sellers hate the eBay shipping platform and would rather switch providers than deal with eBay for labels.

I am sure you will recall the discontent among sellers back in November when eBay pulled this same stunt.

I spoke with PayPal Customer Service and made the point that the same issues with eBay shipping matrix which existed back in November remain unchanged.

According to the CSA, the change has been implemented because some users experience problems with Java which is necessary to process labels through PayPal. CSA agents must have been given a special lip balm that keeps the BS they are forced to spew from sticking to their lips.

When I asked why eBay Corp was forcing yet another micro managing - one size fits all solution to a problem a minority of sellers were experiencing and doing so without the courtesy of an advance announcement, the PayPal CSA had no answer.

Common sense (which is sorely lacking in the halls of eBay Corp) would have dictated a simpler and less aggravating solution for the small number of sellers who were experiencing issues with Java not playing well with PayPal shipping. The common sense solution would be to set up a seller option that would allow sellers faced with the Java issues to opt into having their shipping transactions automatically directed to eBay.

I get it, John Donahoe needs to increase revenue to justify his $16 million dollar salary, and that shifting the commissions the company receives from USPS for shipping labels entirely over to eBay is exactly the kind of smoke and mirrors Wall Street analysts fall for because they do not ask the right questions.

Given that eBay shipping still has the same handicaps, bugs, and imitations that it had back in November, processing labels through eBay is not a compromise I am willing to accept. The incongruity of eBay allowing sellers to be rated by buyers for the quality of their communications, and then deliberately limiting the amount of communication the seller can have with the buyer by limiting messaging in eBay shipping to 600 characters is unacceptable.

Effective immediately, this seller is going to do some revenue shifting of my own by opening an account with a third party postage provider and taking 100% of my postage business away from eBay.

Given eBay's lack of respect for their sellers, I will now give 100% of my postage business to a third party service and manually upload tracking information for every order rather than reward eBay with the commissions they receive for my postage business.
Signed,
Disgusted All Over Again

I am a small seller of 15 years at eBay--continuous. My sales this year each month have been less than half of the past 2 years. I have been following everything on this site looking for solace & hope of some coordinated defense :) I had not realized this as Sat is the day I list. I have been sick over the changes; now this. I've tried the other sites, there's no comparison to eBay, even ''at rest'' like now. They are just killing everything I worked to build. I couldn't take a 14 day return policy--so for the first time ever, I allow no returns. All I do is try to adapt to their short-sighted strategies, year after year. I am just about at the point of bagging it altogether. The joy is gone--and everyone of my thousands of listings has the item details ON THE IMAGE... See why I'm sick? And eBay flat-out LIES.

Dear Disgusted,

Great letter! I'm sorry you're having to go through this, but I sincerely THANK YOU for putting the eBay CSR on-the-spot with your direct and pointed questions.

I think you're making the correct choice to diversify your shipping solution AWAY from the eBay/PP racket.

Aside from the fact that this is little more than a bookkeeping-game designed to make eBay look more profitable... from all accounts it's buggy and unreliable at the most inopportune moments... and NO SERIOUS SELLER should have to put up with that kind of unprofessional and sloppy service.

Not only is it unprofessional... it's incompetent. If a small percentage of users is having trouble with the Java programming... then the fault lies with the PROGRAMMERS and their inability to write programs that have adequate error-checking or version-checking.

You're absolutely correct when you note when a small portion of sellers have difficulty with the program, they should have ONLY provided a graceful ''fall-back'' solution that was optional for ONLY those sellers. The justification given to you is flimsy and just reeks of manure.

Post again and let us know which 3rd-party service you selected. I use Stamps.com.

Good luck to you always!

@RCL...

I've seen a LOT of sellers now putting their terms in description in the photos!

It's messy and ugly, but necessary.

One listing in particular grabbed my attention. The main photo showed the item, but just beneath the image... the seller had added in bright bold lettering ''SCROLL DOWN AND READ DESCRIPTION!''

This seller also included several additional ''slide-show'' photos... NONE OF WHICH included any image of the item. IT WAS ALL TEXT!! One text-image had a few bullet-points about the item. The others text-images had bullet-points about the shipping and return-policy.

A brilliant (but sad) solution. I may try it myself. (Not on my main image... but adding bullet points and additional info on the alternate images might be beneficial.)

I wonder if this technique is in violation of some eBay policy. Are sellers who do this putting their account at greater risk when compared to the risk of selling to PITA's who don't read item descriptions.

I actually have an e-mail from PayPal dated March 23:

We are replacing our current shipping label tool for another that can save you time and money.

Over the next few weeks, PayPal is directing customers to a new and improved tool for creating shipping labels.

The new PayPal tool is powered by eBay and very similar to the current one. But it is easier to use and comes with added advantages, including extra service options, and USPS shipping rates that are up to 32.5% less than what you pay now. You can read all about the benefits in the new tool's FAQs.

What Do I Need to Do?
Nothing right now. Just be aware that starting March 27, 2012, when you go to create a shipping label, you may be automatically directed to use the new PayPal tool.

How Does the Shipping Label Tool Work?
Working with the new tool should be easy and very similar to the one you use now. If you do need help, these FAQs, demos, and tutorials are right there to walk you through the process and answer any questions you may have.

A better way to print shipping labels—just another benefit of PayPal Payments.

Thank you,

PayPal

If you access using the ~Details~ and then ~ Print Label ~ link from your Paypal account, does it still redirect you?...

That is how I always print labels, and I did not have any difficulties back in November ( or ever, except that I always have to use the ~ Reprint ~ link in my email confirmation - Flash or Java issue apparently...)

@ TrentDep clicking on the details and then the print label now takes you to eBay shipping.

The good news, is that Multi Order Shipping  still runs through PayPal.

The bad news, sellers who object to eBay's forst limits on messaging will not see Multi Order Shipping as a workable solution either as messaging there is more limited to 50 characters if I recall correctly.

Concerned sellers should contact PayPal and complain.

Complaining to the eternally ambivalent eBay will do little more than raise your blood pressure and likely cause other health problems.

eBay CSA's have likely been instructed to be dismissive of seller concerns regarding the issue and will work to expedite the termination of your call. In addition, eBay CSA's will probably make a note in each complaining sellers record and putting them  on double secret probation which leads to a demotion in search, and future PayPal account payment holds.

Hmmmm. Shifting the shipping revenue back over to feebay JD??
Then they will shift it back so they can shift it back over to Ebay when they need to, to make their quarterly report look better.
When JD sees that ebay is going to have a rough quarter, that is what they do. Shift the postage revenue over to ebay to make the numbers LOOK better.
No bids for 2 days here which is IMPOSSIBLE.
Blackouts are now occuring in conjunction with the new search and we ARE DEAD IN THE WATER- Thanks JD!
I am not listing anymore until I see some bids JD!
TRS, free shipping, 14 day returns- IT DOSEN'T MATTER!
You still get no bids and no more watchers.
JD NEEDS TO GO TO JAIL FOR WHAT HE HAS DONE TO US.

If there was an announcement it got lost in the hundreds of changes ebay continues to make without explanation - and I experienced the FORCED pp shipping label yesteray.
Now ebay won't let me see the order or the buyer details unless I navigate thru 6 other screens to get to it.  I am not only irritated, I am not going to use the PP shipping label ''tool'' because it never worked for me.
I don't know what ebay is up to other than they must have a direct phone line to Etsy which makes frequent changes to their site to BENEFIT THEIR BOTTOM LINE, not to serve the sellers who make them all that profit every month.

I don't think I can recall any time when I used the shipping label feature at all, even when I was working with eBay. If you don't like a specific feature don't use it. When I ship something I just mark the item "shipped" and move on. It does not help me to decide to use eBay again when I read such discouraging stuff. Clearly there are more problems with eBay than benefits. I need PayPal but I don't need eBay, because a majority of shoppers still use PayPal. Until these problems are solved I won't be using eBay anytime soon.

Just asking, but what difference would it make for eBay (revenue wise) if labels were printed in Paypal or eBay? All profits, including those from Paypal, fall under eBay, yes?

Actually I must be the only person that likes the ebay  shipping it allows me to ship regional boxes. Which I which paypal would get these save me about 30 % Also I can do my international shipping with a
couple of clicks(Custom forms Included) including international first class. I  actually am not a fan of multi pack paypal (cumbersome) no regional boxes which i am stuck using when i sell outside of ebay.

Is this going to be the case if you're on Paypal doing the shipping? What about sales from other venues that use Paypal? And does this affect the packing slip availability?

I use an outside service (Endicia) for my international shipping, but if they force me into using something I don't like, then I'll just do all my shipping off ebay.

Ebay definetly keeps those of us who sell there on our toes. Anger, disgust, frustration, all go on continuously in today's selling on Ebay.

And yet we remain selling there. Why? Addiction to Ebay selling!

If you use the shipping on Ebay/Paypal (hey they are  all in one...no getting around it!) play the game...save yourself some time and print shipping labels that are at the correct postage price. This saves your energy of having to upload tracking #'s manually. But, have an account for shipping somewhere else too. I have used Stamps.com for the past 8 years and they've always served me well. Ebay shipping labels do have incorrect amounts of postage pricing on random packaging and for sure on international labels. Whether they did it on purpose for extra revenue (being Ebay I vote there) or it's a glitch in proper programming (I'm being nice now!) it's all a game.

I've realized this last few months....my complaining gets me no-where! Even done properly through the right channels - NOTHING! So, fair is fair...learn to play the game and turn Ebay's rules around on them for the betterment of your selling. (oh, and sanity) It makes the Ebay selling world a much more pleasant place to sell. Online, they've got a great on flow of customers - hence why we stay - go in...re-read the current rules, policies, etc...then play the game strategicly. I have applied my own philosophy to my selling and it's working in a very short period of time. I'm happier...
I also have a website so I use Ebay more for advertisement & Marketing (done with in Ebay standards) than anything else these days!
