eBay Sales Down 90% after Removal of TRS

By: Ina Steiner

To the Editor:
I have been selling on Ebay for 3 years and have had decent sales up until this past 30 days. Ebay removed by Top Rated Seller badge because 3 buyers felt my shipping charges were excessive (1's and 2's in DSR section) in a 3-month period. Interestingly, all the other sections contained NO 1's and 2's. So out of almost 500 transactions in a 3-month "review" period, 3 buyers dictate my sales for the remaining 30 days.

My sales have literally dropped 90%. I go days where I have 1 sale. I used to sell in the hundreds daily and now I sell in the LOW double digits. Also, NO WHERE on my dashboard did it alert me to my TRS badge being in jeopardy, so I was shocked when I noticed my status is now "above standards." When I look at my dashboard, it shows 2 1's and 2's ratings, but the period reviewed by Ebay is not the same period reflected in the dashboard. ?????? What is going on here?

This has left me an emotional mess, unable to pay my bills and sleepless. I have contacted Ebay twice and finally got through, once to live chat and once via phone. Both times I was assured that the lower status is not the reason for lost sales and that there are a many "variables" that dictate sales. How is it that this is the FIRST time in 3 years I have taken a hit so hard and coincidentally I lost my badge during this same period??? I can track the decline in sales to the exact date the badge was removed.

Ebay's solution??? Offer free shipping and raise my prices to reflect the shipping cost rolled into the sales price. This means more money for Ebay - a bigger piece of the pie for them. So, they are essentially forcing sellers to offer free shipping so Ebay gets more of the pie in exchange for return of a TRS badge? This is just plain wrong and I am sick of the dictatorship that goes on at Ebay.

I am interested to hear if any other established sellers are facing the same situation.
sleepless & saleless

Note to Ina: Please keep my email address and user id confidential as the last thing I need from Ebay is more trouble.

I have been off and on again with the top rated seller status and have not seen much of a difference in my sales one way or another. It's nice to get the small refund on FVF's but it's really not worth it to me to fret and worry constantly about whether I will get low dsr's that month or not. If I do, I do. If I don't, I don't. I just do my best to address customer complaints in a kind manner and do whatever I need to in order to get them on the high road before it escalates to a filed dispute. Sometimes they will still leave low DSR's but that is their prerogative, fair or not. If we are going to sell on eBay we just have to accept the fact that things are beyond our control and hope for a better change in the future. Either that or we just need to get a day job for income but I would rather sell on eBay!

I had TRS status and one day it was gone, it's now back. I sell antiques and collectibles, to collectors and have not seen a drop in sales. It depends on what you sell. I used to sell cosmetics and there are tons of cosmetics sellers out there. The only thing difference is price. With antiques/collectibles, I could be the only person running an auction on that item, as a result, the collectors come out and I get the sales. I found that having at least 2500 items in my store and at least 50 auctions running at any one time is working for me. Ebay takes a lot of work to be successful. I've seen my business literally take off when I keep my store well stocked with a variety of antiques/collectibles and a lot of auctions. It's a business and people need to start thinking like business people not hobbyists

Sales dropping off by 90% I don't believe it either, there's something else going on.

And for "Always use Soap, apparently you haven't been, cause you stink. Ebay is the most disgusting place to sell, do you know what ebay is? They are a rapist, they just take whatever they want and there is nothing you can do about it. For all of you who are so negative, I hope you choke on ebay.

I have to agree with eBay. Nothing ticks me off more than being charged more than actual shipping.  In one case a seller didn't put S&H on their listing and never sent an invoice. So I paid the asking price and got a rude little note that said if I want the item I have to pay shipping.  I guess they got scared they might get a neg so they shipped for free. I told him I didn't want them to ship for free, and as soon as I got it I'd pay.  They wanted $6.99.  Actual shipping cost?  $4.90.  They got $4.90.  Some sellers have obscenely high S&H because they know ebay won't add FVFs to S&H.  I don't give one darn about a TRS badge, but if you have a lousy policy for dinging buyers on the s&h, you deserve the low stars.  Even if s&h is stated in the listing and I agree to pay it, I'm going to give you a seriously low DSR for making money on S&H.  You don't have to ship for free but you should charge actual shipping and not one penny more.  Add your costs into the item price, that's the price of doing business.  I doubt you lost business because of losing the badge, most buyers don't care about it or know what it means. But low DSRs on S&H, we care about that a lot!

" look at Amazon they will throw a customer off for any moron's bad feedback they tell me."

That's a bunch of baloney! I've gotten bad FB on Amazon from someone who never once contacted me and Amazon didn't bat an eye. Don't post things you've heard, post things you know as fact!

Yeah, OK, there Cathy. Explain to me how I should feel sorry for someone who posts a blatantly false story? It takes credibility away from sellers who post stories that actually are true.

Anyone who has been a TRS or not a TRS....knows being one rarely increases your sales....and not being one doesn't decrease it much. Hell, we have been below standard some months and sales don't drop anywhere near that.

Quit crying about shipping prices, too, people. This is just typical of Ebay buyers. You don't read the listing....you just click and buy and ask questions, clarify, and cry later. Boo hoo...they charged me a lousy $2 more than it cost to ship. Really? It's buyers like you who need to take a hike. If someone charges you $90 and it costs $15 to ship...OK....but God....quit crying. I wish I could smack some sense into some of you people.

RE:
'Please tell me that you have a blog, You Tube videos, Twitter account, Facebook fanpage, or your own website to engage with your customers.'
That is all great and can accomplish to engage a large network, but one still one has to sell to pay the bills. I sell as much as I have time to list. But it has become a major depletion of my time to have hundreds of email coming in, having to answer them daily, people wanting to be my friends, come over, whatever. I would like to keep business business. How do these people have time to write endless emails, forward emails, Twitter on, whatever. I tell you how, they don't talk to real people any more, just scroll up and down with their phones. I have seen whole families in restaurants, each playing with their phones, not saying a word to each other, while they are probably sending me emails in hopes of me entertaining them.......

Sorry this happened to you -- I lost TRS for the same reason, even though my percentages are almost 5's across the board.  I do not agree with this particular metric where a tiny minority of buyers with their own subjective criteria can trump an otherwise consistent and high-performing record.

My sales did not take the kind of hit yours did after I lost TRS so I cannot speak to that aspect.  What I can tell you is that I refuse to jump through eBay's hoops or pay their ''protection fee'' by offering Free Shipping and then letting eBay take an additional percentage on the offset.  That does feel like extortion to me.  Therefore, I sell in several different venues, and probably the least on eBay these days.

I just wanted to state that I had stopped using Ebay for many months and I decided to sell a few things. I WAS A DAY BEHIND IN SHIPPING ONE OF THE ITEMS, SO I SENT IT PRIORITY TO GET THE ITEM TO THE CUSTOMER FASTER ! I got  a bunch of 1'S and 2'S from I don't know where ! So, I decided to stop selling on Ebay ! This month my fee's are 0.00 ! I just started to develope other ideas to make money !~ Please be inventive. Don't depend on a fickle companies like Ebay where you have no control ! Ebay was only there to show you what you are capable of. Once you know what you can do ! You don't need them anymore ! Ebay was just the catalyst to get you to start thinking outside of the box ! NOW GO OUT AND GET CREATIVE AND CONQUER THE WORLD, AND LET EBAY EAT YOUR DUST ! I DID !  :)

I do believe the lost of TRS standing can and does significantly impact sales in some categories.  I know from personal experience that it can be devastating.  I have two different product lines and one does leaps and bounds better when I am TRS.  If I lose the TRS standing, the sales in that category slide way way down and it is truly painful.

Now in the case of this seller, I'm really not so sure.  The numbers stated in the posting just don't add up.  The seller stated "So out of almost 500 transactions in a 3-month "review" period, 3 buyers dictate my sales for the remaining 30 days."  The they went on to state "I used to sell in the hundreds daily and now I sell in the LOW double digits."

You can't have it both ways.  Either you were selling around 500 in a quarter or 100's per day.

So let's say your 500 number was correct.  Then 500 divided by 90 days is about 5.5 sales per day.  So then by what you state that your sales is currently doing, then you sales is way UP, not down.  As you stated "now I sell in the LOW double digits".  That would be more than doubling your sales, not a reduction in sales.

Now if you other statement were to be correct and you sold "hundreds" per day, at the bare minimum, you would have had over 9,000 transactions in your 90 day review period. [90 X 100].

So really I am unsure of what you are stating about your own numbers as you contradict yourself.  But to be clear, the store told is very possible and I am confident that it is happening to many sellers.

Ebay done the same to me. One customer left me 6 1's in shipping on the DSR. My TRS was removed due to this. What makes it worse, the seller left rave reviews in feedback, then stabed me in the back with the DSR 1's.

Sales went down at least 85%.
Ebay tells me to offer FREE shipping. This will not happen, I pay the Greedy Ebay Group Too Much as it is.

Sellers are sick and tired of the DSR and no fair feedback ...

It's time to move on after 11 years of change at Ebay. Ebay is unfair to all sellers...Donahoe makes me sick.

I lost my badge a little over a month ago. Prior to that my sales were great, and my snapshot numbers looked like holiday numbers. Today, they are down at least 25 to 50 per cent. I ordered holiday inventory at the peak of my sales, way more than I normally do.

Here's the kicker: the reason was also that I had low DSRs for shipping. I charge $3 for first class items and most cost $2.09 for postage and I use all new bags, bubble wrap, etc. Funny that this should come at a time when ebay  will no longer penalize us for low DSRs when we offer free shipping. Something is not adding up!

Exactly the same problem. To the exact time frame and sales decrease.

In the end it's not only us that suffers, eBay has lost 90% of their profits off us and soon enough when we pack our bags and leave it will be 100%.

People ought to catch up sooner or later.

hi,
for those sceptics my sales went down from £240 per day to £40 after loosing TSR, due to few mean buyers who dictate the rules now. And have to mention my performance is way above standards and goods are quality too. In some departments sales went down significantly. These reports from people are not a bul...s$it, they are true reports. I am very distrested as ebay was my day job. So I will be moving my toys somewhere else at the moment I am sitting and thinking only what else to do. Simply ebay is out of question.

I was a Platinum Powerseller on Ebay for years, paying ebay $5-8k a month in fees. Feedback above 98% always, but we had a dip in feedback due to a family emergency. It didn't effect my overall feedback %, but it effected my short-term feedback. Ebay ended up suspending my account over this. Call it BS or whatever you want, but Ebay has bankrupted many sellers exactly like this. Fortunately I had other channels of distribution at the time and it didn't really effect me, but it would have bankrupted me if it would have happened a year before. Ebay is not your friend and will bankrupt you without thought or concern. I was a high dollar seller and a high dollar ebay buyer over the years, but not anymore. If you really don't believe me, do a search of Ebay seller's suspended for no legitimate reasons.

I really don't think having a Top Seller Badge has anything to do with it. I have been on eBay for several years and I think most buyers get that the badge is more about sellers buckling to eBays whims than any real benefit to buyers. I expect that ebay is a reflection of how bad the economy really is coupled with the company's bull headed decisions over the the past couple of years. I am seeing a complete meltdown in categories in terms of quality product and perceived value. Competition is dwindling along with the bargains. I just don't see the assortment of items, quantities or deals that would entice me to spend much time shopping ebay. Given the time of year I think this is going to be a very bad season for the eBay community.
