eBay Runs Promo to Get Low Priced Goods for Holidays

By: Ina Steiner

Sponsored Link

eBay is running a promotion giving sellers a 25% discount on Final Value Fees for qualifying items. The catch - sellers must list their items at or below the prices eBay specifies.

"Save 25% on selling fees after you list your items competitively," eBay advertised in the subject line of the email invitation, following up with a subheader, "Don't miss out on sales - attract more buyers today."

eBay included a list of items that seemed personalized for each seller who received the email, which advised recipients to "List competitively - Reap the Rewards! Pricing items just right makes you more competitive. List like a pro, then save 25% on selling fees when you sell."

Sellers must activate the offer, list in categories covered by the promotion, follow eBay's pricing recommendations, and then - if the item sells by November 28th - eBay will provide a 25% discount on Final Value fees.

It's not clear how many sellers received the invitation to the promotion - but clearly eBay is looking to boost the number of competitively priced items on its site during the busy holiday-shopping period, ending the day after Cyber Monday, which falls on November 27th this year.

eBay warned that the promotional rate would not be shown during the listing process. Instead, the discount will be reflected as an invoice credit within 30 days after the promotion ends, according to the terms. Sellers are advised to review the details and restrictions carefully if they received an invitation to participate.

This sounds like another one of Ebays desperate attempts to con sellers into lowering their prices down to where there is almost no profit remaining so they can save a whopping  2.5 % of the sales price.  I seem to remember a similar promotion a couples of years ago where Ebay tried to convince sellers to do something similar, thinking that the sellers were so stupid they would not realize that they would wind up losing money on the deal.  That promotion flopped like I think this one will also.

Once again Ebay is showing the desperation to make sales to the low end clientele that they thought they wanted and now are realizing don;t bring the revenues or growth that they need to stay competitive with all the other online sites.  You pushed for the race to the bottom Ebay - and now you are finding out what its like to be on the bottom !

I received the invitation.  Let's just say ...it's a joke, eBay is a joke.  This holiday season America is buying on Amazon,  Can someone remind me what eBay's quarterly growth was ...Amazon, for the quarter, was 38% up.

"[T]he discount will be reflected as an invoice credit within 30 days after the promotion ends...."

The promotion ends November 28th, which means sellers won't see the credit until the end of December, by which time a lot of them will probably have forgotten about the promotion. Or eBay will experience one of its famous glitches and the credits won't be applied.

I received this offer too.  I did activate it, but my pricing is what it is.  If I get any benefit from this promo, I'll be happy about that.  But if I don't, I'm certainly not concerned.  I set my pricing, no matter what Ebay recommendations are.

Most of ebay is now made and shipped from china, and mostly stuff no one would really want to give or receive as a present, and if you did order something, today it will never arrive by December, ebay knows it's holiday sales are finished right now,

Don't  be fooled by this insulting offer by ebay, they will become much more desperate as we get closer to the holiday shipping cutoff point, they will offer much  more, to list your holiday worthy items. they did the same thing last year and the year before,

As for this first insulting offer, I don't think so, We would never lower our ebay prices to what ebay suggests, just to loose money to get a measly  25% off FVF , we will hold out for a better offer, otherwise sell our items elsewhere.

So eBay is trending Ralph Lauren 1/2 Zip Men's Sweaters as popular.  I have several, NWT, to list.  Since I activated Wenig's Invitation I start to list this morning knowing my price must be at or below eBays suggested price.  My sweater is 100% Silk.  I take a look at completed & sold ...30% sell thru (par for course on eBay) ... sold prices are on average $59.

This NWT sweater MSRP is $135   - eBay prompt is to ''attract more buyers, price below $16.  Similar items sold between $9.94 to $20.95.''

Does Wenig ever look at his site from the eyes of his sellers? To get 25% off my final value fees - I have to play Russian Roulette and list this sweater at Used/Worn with stains pricing?  This (He) is what's wrong about eBay.

Reminds me of Lawton's, Home Depot, brass coat hook he was selling on eBay for $1.79 with Free PM Small Flat Rate Box (cost $6.45).  Folks, Home Depot sells this coat hook for $3.49.  Once you do the math, take into account on delivery included in the box was a $10 eBay Gift Card!  I guess when eBay Exes are paid multi-million $ salaries - they can sell on eBay for fun.  But, is it really something to be proud of to sell to lose so much on each & every sale?   Lawton is now over at Macy's making $22 Million a year.

I agree that Wenig knows he can't count on his ''dollar store Chinese sellers''  for his holiday revenues & he certainly can't count on us to sell items of value  to make $1-$2 after fees, free PM shipping, 60 Day returns.

@Marie - are you sure you can afford to list at eBay prompted prices to meet the guidelines of this invitation?  I know I can't.

@Trying

Marie mentioned that she activated the option to perhaps use the promo, but will still do business as usual.

I did the same, but will not allow myself to list items at well below established retail just to receive a small kickback from eBay.

''List Like A Pro''?? Giving merchandise away is the polar opposite of what a true professional seller would do. Seems that again eBay wants to keep buyers coming back by taking money from the wallets of their vendors.

The old maxim " You get what you pay for" applies here.
Cheap stuff (for my search categories) = broken, poor quality stuff.
Ebay SHOULD be encouraging removal / delisting of things that are reruns (over 8 weeks old) and enticing folks to list Great Items for REASONABLE money. LIKE THE OLD DAYS.
But PayPal is the stopper : "No Dice. Done. Not gonna do it."
So, until PayPal is put back in the box, and Stripe Payments is added, Ebay will continue to diminish itself.
Well, I'm off to find a New Job #1 (in the real World) to get me through the winter, and maybe the next few years. Won't be difficult at all. I have TONS of talent....except I'm old now......people don't like Old.....

I sell only Antique, Vintage, Handmade, so:
Does a human being look at the item conditions?
Does a human being take into account Service & Reputation?
Does a human being analyze the authenticity of the item?

WHAT? You say this is done by another "Ebay Written" algorithm?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH !!!

Just Skip it.

This morning I sold all my ETF's that had any eBay holding in them. I refuse to give this company anything another dime even if it's only a small percentage. I feel like they only way to show ebay that sellers are the "real customers", they must be hit hardest in their wallet. I can complain on the boards and blogs until I'm blue in the face, but it won't do a darn thing. Until they start working for me, and not against me, they won't see another dime.

Personally, I ignore %99 of eBays emails - the only ones of concern are about returns or invoices etc.

ANY or ALL pricing/inventory recommendations go right into the trash. After all - as shown above by other posters here (and confirmed at least on my end) - eBay has NO idea what they are doing.

I offered eBay 3 different scenarios - I tried to have 3 different meetings with them - but all they do is repeat the same lines over and over again like stepford wives.

Im willing to "make a go of it on eBay" especially since most of what I have is blocked (gated) on Amazon, but they just dont care.

Tool - wouldnt it be funny if CA ends up splitting into the 3 parts they are trying for and YOUR part out laws weed? THEN what????? LOL

At the subheader: ''''Don't miss out on sales - attract more buyers today.''''

Do tell.  But here's a question: How many sellers 'miss out' EVERY DAY due to eBay's DELIBERATE acts to manipulate, throttle, and hide listings - for years now - to the extent they require sellers to agree with such actions that PRECLUDE the ability to ''attract buyers''?

That's just the sub-header though.  For an eBay maximally caveated 'promise' of 25% fee reduction (already reduced by any proportional decline in the 'sale' price - woo hoo!), maybe nobody will notice the unabashed hypocracy of it all.

Incidentally, those most 'able' to even possibly benefit from this latest desparation ALREADY ''list like a pro''.  Because they already ARE ''pros''.

Too funny....what do they make per sale on shipping FVF from Chinese sellers who offer FREE shipping for a $4.99 item?
Theoretically it's about 2 cents....nonetheless, I'd luv to see their books on how they apportion/separate it from the gross.

@ebayout

They make 45 cents on the sale, no matter how much shipping cost the seller pays. Of course, this is based on the 9% that American sellers pay in fees. Maybe the Asians get a cut rate on the FVF.

Question is: How much does the Chinese seller make after the cost of the item, fees, and shipping?? I see many items from Asia which sell for around a dollar.

Even with the ultra-low ePacket mailing rates, on many sales they are making mere pennies in profit. Good (for them) that they have cheap labor- this type of sweatshop would be considered slavery in the US.

8 weeks old need gone? I beg to differ.   I deal in vintage & unusual.  It's not uncommon for some of my items to sit many months before sold.   I may be the only one with the item listed, and I do price things fairly.  But how often do people shop for a replacement sugar bowl to a 1950s Salem China in the Hopscotch Pink Pattern?   Or a very specific & rare 1987 Boyds Bear dog.  Or, like a friend of mine: parts for Edsel cars.     It might take a year for someone to need a taillight to a 59 Edsel, but when that buyer does he'll pay good money for it.    Please don't confuse long-tail items with worthless.

I activated. My prices will also be what they should be when I list them. I won't lower them for some maybe future discount.
Perhaps I will get lucky and receive a credit.
