eBay Sellers Locked Out This Morning

By: Ina Steiner

eBay users are having major problems this morning, and sellers are reporting they're locked out of Seller Hub, the company's new tech backbone.

EcommerceBytes readers began reporting the problem on Ecommerce EKG early this morning. "We can momentarily go to the My eBay page but then it dumps out with the following message: "Something went wrong. We're sorry. If you want to start over, go to the homepage. If you're stuck, let us help you.""

UK publication Express wrote about the issue in an article titled, "eBay DOWN: Popular online auction site NOT WORKING across the UK," where it wrote, "EBAY is experiencing an outage – creating issues for buyers and sellers across the UK trying to access the popular auction site, users have reported."

The publication pointed to this tweet from @AskeBay that confirmed the site was having problems: "We received reports from users in the UK having issues accessing the site. We are currently working to resolve this ASAP."

The eBay Status Board shows a problem with "Listing" functionality - clicking through calls up this alert:

Another day, another eBay disaster....

Maybe they should contact Amazon and ask if they can get a discount on web services .......

I think there's lots of problems going on. Sales have been practically nothing for 2 days as it is! Even with being slower this time of year, Amazon, Walmart, and my website have NORMAL volume.

In their haste to get those ads back up (that they promised to keep off their pages to allow for the failed Promoted Listings program), they broke the much criticized Seller Hub.

The coders eBay hires cannot walk and chew gum at the same time. Or is it a case of too many cooks spoiling the broth??

With all the ups and downs, programs, changes, re-edits, add ons, and all the rest of the stuff they're done over the years -- can not be surprised.

With the out sourcing to programmers over the years and god knows who, what or where-- I imagine eBay's programming code base to be indescribably obtuse and a one-pound plate of spaghetti more coherent.

When the foundation elements of any enterprise are outsourced, the loss of quality control is no excuse for a lack of quality.  Especially at the most importantly visible user interface. This is a lession eBay enforces religiously every time they volley a buyer 'issue' into a seller's court to 'deal with' - or else.  You contracted the 'service', YOU are responsible for it's operations.  And THEN they are just as likely to land a few lashes and detour buyers right around your little failure of a stall.

When it happens to eBay however, they can't even effectively or in timely fashion communicate the issue or it's status.  What's worse than flying through stormy mountain passes?  Trying to do it on autopilot while walking the aisle trying to sell the cattl....um...paying passengers more peanuts.

Program development 101.  Be prepared to immediately reinstate the last working version anytime releasing a new version crashes the interfaces.  It seems some cultures however choose to patch the leaky pipe instead of replacing it, leaving it to leak while they scurry, completely unprepared for even that contingency.

Systemic incompetence and hypocracy.  THAT is the ''situation'' eBay needs to be ''looking into'' and ''actively working to resolve.''

where exactly did you find this announcement Ina? No where to be seen on the US site.  And I did look yesterday and again just now.

"Be prepared to immediately reinstate the last working version anytime releasing a new version crashes the interfaces."

I'd bet $1000 that the eBay IT department has NO concept - mental or physical - of what "the last working version" is.

One would think that Devin Wenig would be ashamed to have his name associated in any way with such a thoroughly dysfunctional corporation let alone as its CEO.

All Wenig has to do is look at The Ho's sad career of breaking up companies and firing employees when he worked for Bain, disruptively plunging ebafia into mediocrity and near irrelevancy as an e-commerce marketplace, nearly four years of unemployment, and now his current employment with a feeble
"tech" corporation no one has ever heard of.

I guess Wenig figures he can live the shame when he gets his golden parachute corporate of a corrupt BoD.

Beth,
The announcement was removed by eBay. The link in the blog post went to http://www.ebay.com/sts/updates/5 which now resolves to the main status page

> Or is it a case of too many cooks spoiling the broth??

I'd say it's a bit of both. They have a history of rolling out a new feature prematurely and with no thorough peer review or QA testing, only to be surprised when something else breaks.

For example, when their much-vaunted ''Seller Hub'' was made the default destination for selling accounts, it promptly broke several links in the My eBay pulldown menu on all other pages (e.g. listing pages) that were still pointing to the old My Ebay destinations, so you'd end up with their internal 404 ''Something Went Wrong'' page instead.

To this day, the Seller Hub pages offer a Sell Similar link on Second Chance Offer items, which has never been a valid option for SCOs, and so of course if you select it, you get ''Something Went Wrong'' instead.

It's just... fascinating, or something... how a company the size of eBay can have such inept programming development. I mean, these mistakes have nothing to do with the sheer size of their user base; they're a result of basic testing that never got done.
