eBay Withdraws Protections for Late Deliveries

By: Ina Steiner

eBay will no longer protect sellers for late deliveries due to carrier delays, a policy it had temporarily implemented over the summer.

"We are seeing consistent improvements in on-time shipments for USPS and all carriers and late deliveries have returned to pre-COVID-19 levels," eBay stated. "Due to these improvements, we will pause our temporary Seller Protections for late deliveries starting on October 1, 2020."

However, eBay promised to monitor carrier performance and adjust its policies as necessary.

With many sellers using USPS, eBay also used the announcement to promote UPS, which it recently added to its shipping label program: "We were excited to announce the launch of our collaboration with UPS in early September and we continue to provide proven and reliable shipping options, including USPS and FedEx, to our buyers and sellers at discounted rates on eBay Labels."

Issuing the temporary policy to protect sellers for carrier delays was an acknowledgement that eBay been penalizing sellers for factors outside of their control, so it's unclear why it's not a permanent policy, as long as sellers upload tracking showing they fulfilled their handling time commitment.

You can find Monday's announcement on the eBay Announcement Board.

Ergo, eBay is within it's "rights" to punish a seller for shipping on time.
The ol' "shoulda, woulda, coulda" argument.
I live in an imperfect world. How does eBay manage not to?

If Amazon can deliver everything in 2 days or less, well why not make individual eBay sellers do the same?  After all, surely you eBay sellers have at least one van in your garage.  Put it to good use and hustle to make your buyers happy!  Do you even logic, bro?

Bought 14 - 35 pound tubs of Tidy Kitty Litter from a well known on line pet supply co on Friday. It was all delivered on Sat via Fed Ex. and the post office still can't get a 2 oz birthday card to the neighbor little girl within 10 days. That said we have two priority mail packages bouncing around the country. One of them is in Tennessee, package keeps going from nashville to chapel hill. Been doing this for four days. The other one is bouncing from San Diego to Los Angeles for the past five days. That being said we have changed all shipping and handling to 5 days. Most buyers could care less as they know how bad the post office and greed bay are.

ebay wants to punish sellers for a service that neither the seller OR ebay has any control.  They already charge an extra fee for shipping, and they think that they will use any excuse to EXTORT the seller for more money by regulating delivery?
It's not about SERVICE, it's all about MONEY.

They will aid in mail fraud against the seller by assuming non-delivery so they can get penalty FVF.

Buyers hate that when they place an order, they are stuck waiting for 5 days for the item to ship.  Also, sometimes the buyer is so impatient and will use ANY excuse to make a complaint.
Instead of finding a CLEVER way to reach an understanding, ebay uses any old complaint to just penalize the seller by taking more money, or aiding in theft.

Stuff happens, why is it such a big deal if delivery is late?  At least it got there.
The term ''Protections from Late Deliveries'' should not even exist.
It sounds more like a threat to the seller.
So I need protections from...ebay?

They keep feeding a spoiled child mentality to cheat more money from us.

Ina said it best,
''Issuing the temporary policy to protect sellers for carrier delays was an ACKNOWLEGEMENT THAT EBAY HAVE BEEN PENALIZING SELLERS FOR FACTORS OUTSIDE OF THEIR CONTROL, so it's unclear why it's not a permanent policy, as long as sellers upload tracking showing they fulfilled their handling time commitment.''

Is the pandemic over?  I hadn't heard.   Are USPS slow, late and disruptive deliveries over?  Hadn't heard that either.  Did the "no USPS experience" Postmaster General who is destroying efficient mail delivery leave his post?  Hadn't heard.   (Still waiting on my absentee voting ballot that was "supposedly" mailed on September 12th.  I will crawl through glass to vote in this election.)

I guess eBay didn't get the message.   eBay-- the "We've Got Your Back ......With a Knife" company.

"it's unclear why it's not a permanent policy" ...

cause eBay is a criminal organization whose goal is not to make money off ecommerce, but to reach into a sellers pocket to punish for something they have control over and isnt eBays to start with.

It seems like I was ok in Aug. But this month, in particular the first two weeks, the same crap started again. No package scans locally, only scans at destination state, and some took 2 weeks to get there, and a few still have not got there. So it's almost as if it is may and june again. Of couse there are a few customers that dot understand, and you get the "why didnt you ship my product".

I still don't get mail 1-2 days a week.

Post Office is short handed, most of the time it's a Monday or Friday that we don't get mail.

We're at the end of the route and once it hit's 8 pm they all go back to the office.

"cause eBay is a criminal organization whose goal is not to make money off ecommerce"

You're a NUT

How much do you pay eBay in fee's this year for items sold?

How much did you pay them for fraud returns?

END of STORY

NO SELLER, & I mean no seller is paying more for fraud then they do in fee's!

If they are they're dumber then a political donkey!

First, I've paid for Amazon Prime since they first offered it, due to some health and physical reasons. During the first years and for the most part up until a couple of years ago they met their delivery promises. The last couple of years about 20 percent of my deliveries have been late or so close to the end time at night as might as well be late. I live in a major city.

I've never really purchased commodity items on eBay so really have no opinion on those types of sellers and their delivery efficiency. Almost all of my purchases on eBay were and are from various collectible categories, and mostly individual sellers. I don't expect major corporations warehouse efficiency from them, but over the years, except for a couple of screw ups, I've received everything purchases in a reasonable time frame and really have no complaints regarding delivery.

I agree with the many here, this is just another area that eBay uses to increase their overall take by doing nothing and providing no value to their customers. I sell on eBay also, from their very beginning, Their actions and penalty prone continuing money grabs have led me to offer slower service (i.e., 3 days processing) just to protect my seller account as best as I can.

I've been using UPS for the past few months, shipping through PayPal. The speed my packages have been getting to the customers has been fantastic and the cost compared to priority post is much more affordable.

Still don't know why eBay is showing the expected delivery date being one month or more. I have a three day turnaround but generally ship the next day and most of my customers receive their item(s) in less than a week.

Protection ..... racket

"A protection racket is an operation where criminals (eBay) provide protection to persons (sellers) and properties, settle disputes and enforce contracts in markets where the police and judicial system cannot be relied upon. "

HMMMMMMMMMMMMMM

"Protection racketeers or mafia groups operate mostly in the black market, providing buyers and sellers the security they need for smooth transactions" - which is EXACTLY how eBay operates. Do what we want, the way we want you to OR ELSE bad things will happen to you - regardless of whether its your fault or not.

"A protection racketeer cannot tolerate competition within his sphere of influence from another racketeer." - eBay refuses to allow other payment methods beyond MP so that they can control they seller and his/her financial outcome.

''Tech platforms are used to commit crimes all the time, but Ms. Zea’s experience is something new: being asked to commit a crime to protect the platform itself, or at least protect the executives running it.''

All this, (and I'm sure there's more) by executives who were STILL EMPLOYED at ebay during the time it happened.
CRIMINALS think and operate this way!!
I bet these people LOVE the fact that they can't show up to their offices due to COVID.
Being the cowards that they are, they will still be in hiding long after the work restrictions are lifted.

Extracting money from private bank accounts.
More harassing emails from 'customers'.
Inhibiting business success.
Throttling.
Abuse of policy.
CONSTANT lies about performance and service.

This is the way ebay executives run it's commerce site.
Would any seller here let me do that 'for' them?
Any LEGITAMITE business has NO TIME to come up with these strategies to cheat others, unless the business itself and the people who run it are COMPLETE FAILURES.

Bad business that cheats should also be criminal.

I am sure the dopes running eBay would love nothing more than to get the message out before the holiday shopping season that mail service is back to reliable standards.

It is better than it was, but far from reliable as before. The pandemic continues which in itself is cause for delays and disruptions. Hurricanes are still rolling in; they are naming them by the Greek alphabet there have been so many. Here in California, fires continue to rage out of control causing disruptions throughout, inside and out of the state. Just received a feedback note that item is great, but shipping was slow. Yep, took over a week to travel north from Los Angeles to Oregon. There are blazes raging all along the way.

Just last week, a fill in carrier delivered the mail and did not fulfill my pickup request. My sales stopped cold for over 24 hours until the scans began to go through for those packages. After that, 16 sales in one day, highest daily amount since end of May! Coincidence? Not likely.

Yesterday, carrier shows up after 7 pm. Of 11 packages picked up, 6 scanned at 8:20 pm last night; 4 scanned at 1:23 this morning (late), 1 not scanned at all. Now I get to hope there aren't any delays on the way for those 5 packages.

Ebay execs may wish the problems away, and lie to buyers in the process. The fact is we are far from the levels of performance pre-covid.

I always put a 3 day handling time and ship the next day. Ebay is a venue like a flea market and really needs to keep their nose out of it. It is like the owner of the parking lot walking through telling people how to do their business.

I'm a Top Rated seller, but not officially because I refuse to offer free returns, mainly because my actual shipping cost averages about $10 on 80% of my items.
I have 1-day handling. I ship 99% USPS, and my postman picks up AND scans.
Although I have 1-day handling, I will bust my hump to ship the SAME day if I get an order before he arrives on a given day.
eBay doesn't know that, and neither do my customers.
eBay gets their 12.whatever% regardless.
After 22 years, I'm starting to question myself.

Not sure what planet Ebay is on, but it's not this one.  I'm seeing sometimes 2 or 3 days for First Class to even get out of town here in Detroit.  I know USPS is doing the best they can whilst under attack from Covid and our own federal government, but Ebay needs to come correct and live in the real world.
