eBay May Launch Brand Stores Like Amazon Just Did

eBay will be making some changes as it tries to attract brands to its marketplace, according to CEO Devin Wenig during a presentation at the Citi 2017 Global Technology Conference on September 6th. He said details would be coming a little later in the year, but he hinted that it might provide a Store format just for brands, something its rival Amazon is now doing.

eBay could be planning on providing an improved Store for the brand to sell from directly as well as an option for brands to highlight products sold by authorized resellers.

"Brands want a couple of unique things," Wenig told the Wall Street audience. "They may want a store that says this comes directly from the brand. It's an authorized reseller, it carries the warranty. Those are things we can provide them, and we'll talk more about that probably a bit later in the year."

This may be another case of eBay following the lead of Amazon, which is increasingly offering brands of all sizes more tools to showcase their wares on its marketplaces, such as their own stores, as we reported last month.

Take a look at the Ethan Allen Store on Amazon for example to see what eBay may be planning. Amazon allows brands to customize the look of their store and use it to showcase a handpicked assortment of products. A video on its Amazon Store allows Ethan Allen to tell a visual story about its brand with the help of its employees.

On its dedicated Amazon store, Ethan Allen is selling products directly, with no other sellers vying for a Buy Box. Interestingly we found plenty of Ethan Allen products on eBay sold by third-party sellers, but we found no indication the company is selling there directly.

We also found it interesting that eBay is turning to Facebook for help in wooing brands. Last month, we reported that eBay is using Facebook ads to reach them where it is promising brands some of the following:

- the ability to curate buying experiences for shoppers, with the ability to aggregate products from authorized sellers.

- data on more than 280 million hours of unique search, browsing and purchases each month;

- help reaching shoppers off eBay through the implementation of a single, universal login for users, allowing brands "to reach and effectively influence laser-targeted consumers, even when they are not shopping on eBay."

eBay also enticed brands  with the following pitch: "Increase your market share and drive sales lift by curating consumer interactions towards authorized sellers, or strengthen an existing storefront. We will guide shoppers down your brand's sales funnel with promotional elements, traffic drivers and relevant content."

Wall Street generally likes moves eBay makes that imitate Amazon, but this initiative could give sellers cause for concern.

What Devin tells Wall Street are mostly lies, just like he told them that Sellers Hub and Promoted Listings were the 'Flywheel' to great eBay growth.

The truth is the exact opposite, sellers hate Seller Hub and no seller wants to pay eBay for promoted listings when they already pay final value fees, store fees, fees on shipping, listing fees.

So when Wall Street finds out the reality of Devin's many lies, that will spell doom for the stock price, they are already figuring out that eBay's growth is flat and Devin's structured data initiative is a flop along with the terrible thing he calls a product search engine.

Sounds to me like every Liquidation and closeout dealer will be up sh-- creak without a boat or paddle.  If the markets start blocking these dealers like amazon does now you will see a lot more clothes and merchandise hitting the landfills.

When Amazon started gating brands and limiting items a 3P seller could feature on their site, I moved the unallowed items to eBay.

If eBay pulls the same thing, I will just offer the items somewhere else. If they can line up brands to push small sellers out, good for them. And you know Wal-Mart is angling in the same direction.

But I think eBay just does not have the clout to gain enough brands to replace what volume small and medium sellers already are producing for the site.

Heck, why don't they realize that they have a good thing going? There are millions of us who find, list, warehouse, sell, pick, and pack merchandise, and they collect a handsome sum for OUR EFFORTS!!

Are they not embarrassed over how they blatantly use Amazon's playbook?

Do those senior leaders do this for the soul purpose of hoping that eBay will be acquired by Amazon so that they can all hit the bricks and cash in big?

Its NOT if, but WHEN eBay will do this.

At least THIS time, the head monkey is giving everyone a hat tip as to whats comming.

This game is NOT new, and eBay has tried it in the past with no real success, but THIS time - since there is no more revenue to be gotten from sellers (their selling the same parking spot 2x isnt working), they are going back to this play.

If you recall, they have dont his before (for those who dont - this happened with Skullcandy headphones)(I know as I was caught in the mess) and they have also tried the "authorized dealer" game (tag on listings) before.

Back then they realized it would hurt their smaller sellers so they backed off. It also caused conflict with the group of large sellers that eBay depends on for revenue (at least in electronics) - they are large self styled distributors who pretend they are small dealers - they are the ones whom eBay gives the front page and the Deals of the Day spots to.

When they did it with Skullcandy, the deal was (I was involved in a lawsuit about this so I have some details) that Skullcandy had a premier store, traffic was routed to them, and they had UNLIMITED VERO POWER. I and other sellers I know got crushed by the wave of VERO complaints for fakes (even though we bought the items from their won local distributor)(who had to give up paperwork when asked - then lost the dealership).

eBay made money on the store, sold them the VERO tools to go after "unrecognized sellers", and small sellers got crushed. Skullcandy also dumped thier entire warehouse on eBay at or belowe cost to INSURE there was NO competition.

eBay gained but lost - because as any smart seller will tell you - Skullcandy (like all other smart dealers) USED EBAY and those sales to make FURTHER OFF EBAY SALES - it was simply the cost of new customer acquisition for Skullcandy.

It was a game I hope would NOT be replayed - but it seems that eBay is intent on reviving the dead this time.

You can count on Wenig to once again don the black cloak, say the incantations, and raise this devil from the depths of hell so that it can come back and kill us all.

It SQUARELY effects people like me - not sellers who do used or other items that are not electronic or "specialty".

You can bet your bottom dollar that most of the fashion people are already on board and signing up - brands like MK are just chomping at the bit - to control eBays MK market .....

How would a seller who doesnt get that "authorized dealer" tag/recognition EVER compete against those who do .... ?

eBay used to be the "UNCOLA" and it worked - dealers didnt have to deal with MAP, UPP, and other garbage ........... lets see how this all goes down.

I do remember the last time they tried and failed at this, and that was quite a few years back, it has even less of a chance of working today,

ebay is Not the place to shop for brand name, brand new items, otherwise all the brand names would already be selling on there which most don't, and they are not about to,  we even removed our good company name from ebay and sell under a distributors name,

ebay = Refurbished, Used, Open Box, End of Stock, Chinese Crap,

And Again as it has happened many times in the past  it sounds like ebay is going into "desperate mode" ,  and you know what that means,,,,,,,,

"Sellers get ready for a fee increase, because we asked for it "

David/Ina - follow up question PLEASE:

What does "data on more than 280 million hours of unique search, browsing and purchases each month" mean?

Did eBay give itself permission to sell Buyer and Seller data that occurs through out the system?

eBay "protects" buyers by NOT making their past purchases available (good or bad we can have that discussion another day) BUT - does that line mean that eBay inserted new lines in the TOS to give itself permission to sell browsing and shopping data to large companies - without a buyer or sellers permission ??????

ISNT THAT ILLEGAL?

This move by eBay, and those similar leading up to it regarding their retooling agenda, isn't necessarilly bad business.  Or rather, would have been so much better business had they leveraged their eCommerce niche within it from the start.  Instead they trashed it, tossing their eggs into a virtual basket loosely wired with copies of 'adapted' piece parts.  It's no wonder shorts and sparks ensue.  And that the result is too dangerous to the 'common man' to be too near.  Going haywire is what they used to call it.

Clearly, those managing see this particular business in the same light as 'any other', operational details notwithstanding.  Their 'job' is to manage the company's resources to create more, and they, to a person of this positional authority, believe their 'skills' are applicable no matter what 'type' of business needs resource management.

However, those operational details can't be overlooked, because it is those which define the difference between business mediocrity, and critical acclaim.  More significantly, the decreasing diversity and opportunity this latest marketing collateral color represents to entrepreneur eCommerce - and to it's consumers, thousands of livelihoods are being either diminished, disadvantaged, significantly altered, or decimated all together.  All because of a lack of leveraging.  All because of a lack of understanding of the operational details that DID define eBay as an eCommerce leader.

Meanwhile, while eBay attempts to tinker together yet another 'Chinese copy' of an already inovated eCom retail apparatus fed by 'data' of such glued together metrics 'analyzed' by the same folks who Daily exhibit a profound inability to apply fact to resolve allegation, Amazon is investing in machine learning technology at a dedicated facility being constructed in Spain.  In concert with an EU model fulfillment center.  So they can maximize efficiency in reacting to market demand.  Across a UNIFIED global eCom network, as opposed to eBay's fractionated approach, each with different operational details to expend resources managing.

Because Amazon built their own market niche from the beginning, then TRULY invested in innovation.  No more friendly to the entreprenure it seems, but that was known up front.  Which is WHY eBay's niche was also ripe to harvest and use for seed to grow more in the 'retail' north forty.

Instead, fancying themselves as the new eFarmers, they let those entreprenure sellers rot, and called them fertilizer, at best weeds, maybe a wildflower or two.  Unworth harvesting.

All just so they could try and make their grass as green as the neighbors.  With artificial turf.

"Brands" have their own website.
That's where I go.
I don't buy anything of that nature off Ebay.
Could be counter fit.
And I don't want to deal with a 3rd party.

@The End

Exactly. These brands which are coveted by eBay already have their own websites to sell their merchandise. And with no middleman. Also, if one purchases a new item directly from a manufacturer, they should receive a better warranty and more personalized customer service after the sale.

Why would a brand wish to sully their reputation by associating themselves with a company that is despised by many consumers? And pay a fee (even if it is much smaller than us small-medium sized sellers give to eBay) for the so-called ''privilege''??

Someone out there HAS to be able to build a version of the old ebay where used items, antiques, collectibles, etc can be sold. You know, like ebay used to be.

longtimepowerseller,

That marketplace has already been started and eBay sellers are already listing there:

Pricefalls.com

Heading there to put up new listings since eBay forced my account into Sellers Hub, no way they will get away with that.

It takes less effort to list on Pricefalls than it does learning that abomination that Devin is forcing sellers to use, his idiotic Sellers Hub.

So if I'm seeing the picture here clearly this is what I'll see in the future if Wenig gets his way.

I buy HP ink cartridges on eBay, they have to be sealed and not expired.

I'll search for 901XL and be shown a buy box from HP with the lowest cost possible that HP can offer.

If the price is low enough eBay/HP know I won't waste time hunting for something that might not live up to my expectations.

Sales will be pushed to manufactures instead of 3rd party sellers.

This won't fare well for sellers of new items if eBay has it's way. . .

So I checked out pricefalls.  Why does every eBay alternative sabotage themselves?  If it's not insane fees, it's insane restrictions.  Or both.

Can't sell internationally, can't pay without PreyPal/Authorize.
$500 annual fee, plus $1 per order, plus 7%-12% commission, plus card processing fee.

No, really, for a good laugh, go look at their terms and conditions.  Even eBay refunds the commission on returns/cancellations.  Not pricefalls.  Hell, they even charge you the processing fee on paying your bills if I read the FAQ right.  Holy cow, are they even trying?

Just, wow, I always knew marketing would be the hard part of making my own eBay but who cares if I ever gain critical mass if I can soak enough fools for that $500 annual/application fee?

Yes Tool - you are correct.

eay is setting up its smaller dealers (of any brand of any kind of item - but you know that it will be mostly electronics, fashion and other NEW items) against the big boys.

Its not even that bad on Amazon - but with eBay, theres no "floor" on how low they will go.

eBay has stated MANY times that small sellers are an unreliable source of income (gotta pay for the fuel for the Lear Jets for eBay execs somehow) and this type of thing would be that final nail in the coffin.

eBay will spin it as a way to clean up eBay (aka the wild west), manufacturers will spin it as a way to keep fakes off eBay, and Wall Street will like it for the first few quarters since there will be increased revenue.

Its AFTER all that, that the house of cards collapses (ie the manufacturers take the customers and sell them DIRECTLY off eBay) - but as you well know (even though we disagree on alot of eBay things) - eBay ONLY looks at short term gains not long term ones - thats why it makes no investment(s) into anything.

Lets see how this all plays out ... but its certainly NOT good news for any small seller selling small NEW goods.
