eBay Down: Twelfth Outage of the Year

By: Ina Steiner

Reports are flooding in that eBay is down, estimated to be the twelfth major outage eBay has experienced this year. The website IsItDownRighNow confirms problems with the site.

Wrote one EcommerceBytes reader: "Can't log into eBay. Not with any account on any browser. One comedy screen told me it was my browser settings."

Other readers reported the problem on Ecommerce EKG. "eBay main page will not load on Firefox or Google Chrome @ 6:50am EST. Can get to the community boards, but still can't get to or log into my eBay account."

And users reported the problem on the eBay discussion boards, such as a thread titled, "Anyone else having sign in issues to eBay itself?" where a user wrote: "It's suddenly either just spinning on the sign in page on FF and on IE it won't even bring up the sign in page."

It's been a tough year for eBay Marketplaces with a security breach in February and March and major site accessibility issues. On top of that, eBay's Chief Technology Officer Mark Carges has just stepped down to focus on a family matter.

Please let us know if you're having problems by indicating so on the Ecommerce EKG board and leaving a message in the comments below.

Update 9/14/14 10:39 pm EST: eBay is blaming the problem on "unexpected power issues with storage arrays linked to some of our databases," see Monday's Newsflash story for more on the latest from the VP of eBay's Global Platform & Infrastructure Group Sri Shivananda.

Before someone takes me to task about celebrating "outages" other known as Hacks while so many people are suffering and losing money, my sales are down more than $27,000 YoY which a represents 68% decrease in sales since ebay required password changes.

As damaging as this is, I'm willing to lose more to exterminate of John Donahoe and The Sociopaths.

Frankly, I hope the hacks continue until a thorough housecleaning has been accomplished with all traces of Bain eradicated.

eBay management have everything under control.
This is just another Operation Pump and Dump which means buy eBay stocks when it is low and sell eBay stocks when it is high.  Time for eBay management to stocks up on eBay stocks and pump it up later, and dump it onto the public.  Seems like another great eBay plan!

12 outtages a year are what you should expect from a company that ONLY seems to hire people with ZERO ecommerce / computer experience.

Google ANY of eBays top execs and you can see their resumes. NONE OF THEM know anything about computers, ecommerce, buying and selling or anything else.

Where is eBays board of directors? where are the shareholders? how does ANYONE let this pass as OK?

Previous Jobs:

J Donohue - eVolution Partners - investment firm

David Dorman - Partner of Centerview Capital Technology - investmant firm

Edward W. Barnholt - Agilent Technologies, Inc. - a measurement company

Thomas Tierney - The Bridgespan Group -  a nonprofit organization that collaborates with mission-driven leaders and organizations to help accelerate social impact ... (WTF???)

Kathleen C. Mitic - Founder and Chief Executive Officer - mobile start-up company formed in August 2012

SHall I go on?

Oh yeh - lets see how many Mutual Funds that own EBAY - DROPPED owned shares ... shall we ?  (change in share amounts)

Vanguard Total Stock Market Index Fund -125,612

PowerShares QQQ Trust -154,784

Vanguard 500 Index Fund -27,248

SPDR S&P 500 ETF  -321,782

Government Pension Fund - Global (The) -817,012

Vanguard Wellington Fund - 1,131,570

what do THESE guys know what we dont?

Wait a minute!  This is not funny! I'm losing thousands of dollars each month for not being able to sell fake Rolex. eBay management should get this fixed immediately!

Ming,

I am afraid that we will still have JD for some time to come.

Right now JD is water skiing his departure plan.

Rather than going down with the ship, JD has one foot on ebay and the other on Paypal.

When Icaan hacks off Paypal then JD will show is fabulous maneuvering skills by dropping the ebay ski and going solo as CEO of Paypal.

The _ _ _ is going where the money's going.

For those of you saying that "12 outages a year is a really high number", please keep in mind that it's actually been 12 outages so far this year and we've still got the 3 and a half busiest months left to go. Ebay is notorious for weekend outages during the holidays and I expect this year will be no different.

@Mcbob,
But from the way things look, it wont be very busy anyway. Usually back to school times is one of busiest times for me as i sell to a lot of college students. Not this year. I was busy but from other venues, not ebay.

I have only had printing issues for a week now. Today has been bad for printing as well.  Oddly, I have not experienced problems using the site but who knows how many sales I've lost from people having issues.  I don't know how but the last 3 months have been the best 3 consecutive in over 2 years.  A fluke perhaps.

Anyone had any problems with censorship on seeking alpha? T here is an article over there on how ebay can drive stock price up (by spinning off paypal ofcourse) and one poster over there, was complaining about ebay's site being down today and another poster attacked the ebay user. I tried to defend this seller for what he wrote and they sent me an email that they were removing my post for  defending the ebay user. Here is a link to it. Ofcourse, my post is no there because they removed it.http://seekingalpha.com/article/2493525-how-ebay-could-easily-and-s
ignificantly-increase-shareholder-returns?uprof=82&dr=1
Here
is the response i got. This is what i posted.
MNSW, You are quick to judge. Go sell there yourself, and let them hide the listings that you pay for.
This is the response i got from seeking alpha
Greetings from the Seeking Alpha moderation team. It turns out users often disagree regarding the investment ideas presented on the site. It has also become clear that these disagreements can spark grand debates that help readers make informed decisions. This only works however, when users keep the conversation centered on the investment thesis and do not resort to personal attacks or blanket dismissals of other users’ ideas. The comment copied below looks to contain such a personal attack and/or blanket dismissal and so, regrettably, we’re compelled to remove it.

Please understand that we do strive to err on the side of facilitating free and open debate. This means that we are never happy about having to remove a comment. That said, in order to ensure that Seeking Alpha continues to be the go-to destination for serious investment discussion, comments must adhere to our guidelines, which can be found here: http://seekingalpha.com/page/comment_guidelines?source=moddeletion

Let me know what you think.

Does Seeking Alpha exercise censorship?

Does a leopard have spots?

They permanently banned me three years ago when I suggested that ebay management regularly engages in stock price manipulation and gave three concrete examples.

Seeking Alpha is where Lorrie Norrington used to post her Polly Anna ebay garbage.

Seeking Alpha is an ebay censorship clone.

If you can't say something nice about about ebay, Seeking Alpha will remove it.

I'm also banned another Silicon Valley cheerleader site.

@ming, Yeah, i always thought they were an ebay cheerleader but never thought they would censor a post as benign as the one i made. I sent them back a message about their censorship of actual ebay users.

All this from a sleazy company that expects defect-free impeccable behavior from its sellers ?
I hope that JD has a "family issue" soon!

The hack went on for several hours.  I started around 7 AM and couldn't relist a bunch of things I'd ended.  That means I lost money thanks to this mess-up.

Sign-in was fried, including the sign-in for Traffic Reports, which I've been obsessing on for a while now.  My traffic was cut in half today for a fact, ending a nice little streak.  I'm honestly not exaggerating.

Oh, and roger-that to whoever said that Descriptions were messed up in listings.  Browser reload fixed it each time, but it could have been because I still had an active cookie, who knows.

This garbage has officially gotten out of hand.

Not a sale today, not even a question. We have 8 very popular items no one else has that 3-4 years ago would have reaped $800-$1,500 in sales on a Sunday of JUST those 8 items alone not counting regular sales.

@ming & others. First, Ming, hey man how do you REALLY feel! I can feel your pain. I've read the complaints, been on eBay for a while, suffered their many glitches this year, these people are right on. The problem did not start TODAY. In my opinion, RUN. This has been going on for a few weeks that I'm sure of. I desperately needed the money, had made top rated seller status, my buyers love their service, SO I have way too much invested out of ?trust and I've been affected financially being partially crippled in addition to other things in errors that happened today with their problems, I finally started pulling everything I had off with them. I called them and said I do not want a final value fee giving them the REST of the story, I was told I would be responsible for FINAL value fees, as I was taking all my items down as we spoke. So, Ming, I also lost my marriage because my husband didn't want to be with me the way I am, lost everything I had and had to start over, finally buying a very modest home that I am sure to lose now because every dollar is serious money before and even more now so I'm going right back down. I have no where to turn, I am too afraid to lose $$$ listing on their site, my identity stolen, and who knows (I'm broke now!!) AND NO working it out with them? They've had all the money they will get from me. I will lose, but it will not be $1.00 to THEM. Who in the world would want to look forward to Christmas sales? I will be very busy finding where to go NOW. I guess they should have not sent out those ''Dear John'' letters so soon. I was still selling until today, but not now.

Ever since the ''Anniversary Hack'', I've spoken with some programmers I worked with years ago. They are of the opinion that due to the frequency of ''technical difficulties'' the site has been experiencing the past few weeks, the hackers who got in originally found NUMEROUS backdoors and probably posted them on the various darkweb hacker websites. So now, hackers across the globe are having a field day with the swiss cheese base software the eBay platform is built upon.

ebay and PayPal both have reverted back to previous ''versions'' of their builds that they hoped would be more secure. And I feel that worked for PayPal but not the Frankensteined patchwork quilt of cobbled together modules that we know as eBay. Too much sloppy code for too long leaving too many potential backdoors for hackers to exploit. eBay almost needs a complete rewrite from scratch. Mark Carges got out before it gets any worse.

I too am also banned from posting on SeekingAlpha.com (a couple f eBay shills ganged up on me); but I still watch the site; "MNSW" is obviously an eBay shill ...

The difference between eBay and the Mafia is that most eBay employees are unaware that they are working for an organisation that is calculatingly involved in criminal activity … http://bit.ly/11F2eas

That ''spin'' has just enough technospeak to pacify the average eBay user but it doesn't hold water for those of us who have worked in the software business. Nice try, but no cigar.

Notice how Sri states they are '' working now to put in place additional measures to keep disruptions to an absolute minimum.'' And ''we have been working to implement additional layers of security and improvements to site performance.''

When cut thru the technospeak, this is what is being said......we know we have been hacked and are continuing to be hacked. We are patching the security holes as quickly as we can identify them.

And THAT is the bottomline!!!
