eBay Down: Twelfth Outage of the Year

By: Ina Steiner
Sponsored Link
Reports are flooding in that eBay is down, estimated to be the twelfth major outage eBay has experienced this year. The website IsItDownRighNow confirms problems with the site.

Wrote one EcommerceBytes reader: "Can't log into eBay. Not with any account on any browser. One comedy screen told me it was my browser settings."

Other readers reported the problem on Ecommerce EKG. "eBay main page will not load on Firefox or Google Chrome @ 6:50am EST. Can get to the community boards, but still can't get to or log into my eBay account."

And users reported the problem on the eBay discussion boards, such as a thread titled, "Anyone else having sign in issues to eBay itself?" where a user wrote: "It's suddenly either just spinning on the sign in page on FF and on IE it won't even bring up the sign in page."

It's been a tough year for eBay Marketplaces with a security breach in February and March and major site accessibility issues. On top of that, eBay's Chief Technology Officer Mark Carges has just stepped down to focus on a family matter.

Please let us know if you're having problems by indicating so on the Ecommerce EKG board and leaving a message in the comments below.

Update 9/14/14 10:39 pm EST: eBay is blaming the problem on "unexpected power issues with storage arrays linked to some of our databases," see Monday's Newsflash story for more on the latest from the VP of eBay's Global Platform & Infrastructure Group Sri Shivananda.

The last time I checked Michael Moore's site there's no longer a way to send him an e-mail about a suggestion for an investigation. Has anyone contacted The Daily Mail? They have run numerous stories regarding eBay, and being based in the U.K. they wouldn't have the same "issues" that the U.S. media would.

Here are some round about ways to get to Michael.  If he hears from enough of us, perhaps it will get through.

@REXFORD----

The How to get to Michael Moore site you posted is an astrology site--was that the one you meant?  It also asks you to go and download a music site I have never heard of before you can "email"--who knows who you are actually emailing?

Maybe not the best route--lets go see if FB has a  page

“Time To Get Out Of eBay”

Just occasionally we get a realistic appraisal of eBay on SeekingAlpha.com. It will be interesting to see how the eBay shills respond …

I posted and it works fine.  Not an astrology site.  If this doesn't work simply google "michael moore publicist" and it will pull it right up.

Apple is going into the payment business with their new products and technology.

Paypal will soon be feeling this and Paypal's value is going down.

In a couple years ebay and paypal may both be has beens.

@Donkey,

Even with EMV/NFC well established in the rest of the world, and others offering mobile payments for some years, mobile commerce still represents only ~1% of total commerce. The other ninety-nine percent of consumers are perfectly happy with their new, secure, EMV/NFC cards. Mobile payments therefore is an answer looking for a problem that simply does not exist, and Apple Pay is therefore of no threat to the traditional financial system …

Apple Pay is also of little threat to “PreyPal” as PayPal’s business is predominantly “online”; its off-line activities are negligible; and Apple Pay’s activities will be predominantly at physical POS—if users can find a EMV/NFC terminal … http://bit.ly/1nSA1Zl

Still, I would agree that in a couple of years time both eBay and “PreyPal” will likely be “has beens” …

I left a Post on Michael Moores FaceBook page (Timeline?)  I am not  a  FB expert by any means but there is some one posting there very recently so maybe he will actually see this---If you are on FB and know how to use it then PLEASE go and add your comments/name whatever--I briefly touched on some of the (many) sins of ebay and how they are bankrupting their sellers---who knows maybe it will spark interest.

Not to rain on any parades, but that plan has been kicked around before without any encouraging outcome.

Wasn't Micheal Moore on TV once upon a time with his toy collection he got on ebay, and is he in fact an avid ebayer?

Nonetheless, here's that topsynergy url made tiny. Good luck.

@brokentoys19 ''Really? I mean really?: ''...the hackers who got in originally found NUMEROUS backdoors...''
Yeah, that and/or created backdoors, trapdoors, sidedoors, screen doors, overhead doors,  aircraft hanger doors, batcave doors!... omg lmao''

Don't forget about the doggy doors! Those skinny Eastern Europeans could slip right through the German Shepherd size!

@Beanie  - You have a good point, I have wondered to dating back to the original hack if the Chinese are behind all of this to KO eBay and make their sites look better to get all the business ?

I have learned in life, that the COMPETITION in all walks of life tends to usually be no holds barred RUTHLESS for the almighty $

It seems to me, someone is trying to KO eBay besides the CEO

The Russians have motivations as well.

Not only will many ebay sellers not ship there whenever the site is up and running, but now there are strong sanctions against Russia in place.

As I have said before,  ad nauseum, can you believe the default amount Paypal can take out of your bank account on a given day is $10,000 and there is NO WAY TO CHANGE THAT.
As Philip Cohen said, its crazy to have your bank account tied to Paypal. But since its so convenient for me and I live financially close to the wire I opened up a separate account just for Paypal with no money in it. After yesterday, I am so glad I did! Though I am not assuming this makes me invulnerable. There is no limit to what these hackers can do. They are probably even as we speak installing all sorts of back door Trojans and stuff that can strike later or strike a bunch of systems all at one time. Or just quietly lay in wait to watch stuff.
Anyway, protect your bank account from Paypal if there is anything still in it after all the bad games Ebay has played.

Wonder if the ebay hack is a result of Alibaba going public this week?

Ali is going to pull cash out of the market like a dyson vacuum cleaner.
Folks are buying Yahoo to get the 30% piece (Yahoo owns 30% of Alibaba) and others will start buying it direct on Friday LIKE MAD through their brokers- if ebay does not come up with another rumor we will see mid 40's 2-3 days after Alibaba's IPO day (Fri).

An EZ call to make a pile would be to SHORT IT NOW and you would make a PILE IF YOU SOLD IT A DAY OR 2 AFTER ALI OPENS FOR SALE ON Friday.

In 2010 PREFERRED shares of Alibaba pre-sold in China and those PREFERRED SHARES have TRIPLED in 3-4 years- lucky Chinese early investors.
Watch that ebay RUMOR MILL folks- Nixon was a babe in the woods compared to JD's DIRTY TRICKS.

Mark your calendars, Alibaba has arrived.

The phone- 30 days.
(PP snubbed on Applepay)!

Ebay- your competitors say GAME ON.
