eBay Tests New Home Page Design

By: Ina Steiner

eBay is testing a new home page design. Here is a screenshot of the current home page taken yesterday.

And here is a screenshot of the new home page design taken today (note that not everyone will see the new design).

eBay made a number of navigation changes to the home page, including removing the "Community" link from the top of the page.

Visitors who see the new home page design will see a blue tab on the right side of the screen that says, "Tell us what you think."

Clicking on the tab opens a survey where eBay asks users to answer the statement "The new left navigation helped me find what I'm looking for" with a Strongly disagree; Somewhat disagree; Neither agree nor disagree; Somewhat agree; Strongly agree; or, Don't Know / N/A.

The survey also asks users to answer the question, "What can we do to improve the left navigation on the eBay homepage?"

Users on an eBay discussion board are discussing their opinions of the changes.

Let us know if you're seeing the new page and what you think.

No community link? Just how do we get to forums and the answer center. Another fix what is not broken Ebay genius move.

I haven't seen the new home page on my computer, but it looks confusing.

And what's with the last viewed item and recent searches on our home page? Is that an option or will we be forced to have to look at that every time we open the Ebay homepage? That is a bit much.

In fact, I plan on changing my preferences so I don't receive all these pesky Ebay emails about what my saved sellers just listed, new items that match my searches, don't miss out on such and such, etc, etc. I get them every day.

No wonder buyers complained about too many emails.

Yes the constant stream of emails from eBay is quite annoying. I think that removing the community link is a very big mistake. Because, that is what eBay's roots are, not a site that looks more like a company / corporate website. People like quirkiness, not something they find at their local mall.

@LSP yes buyers complain about the constant emails. Fact is eBay thought they were talking about sellers emails not eBays.

Susan T says: "I think that removing the community link is a very big mistake. Because, that is what eBay's roots are, not a site that looks more like a company / corporate website."

Susan T, In my opinion, the Leaders at eBay could care less about the community and they have done nothing but try and destroy in since you know who took the helm.  The focus IS on corporate.  Amazing that the very thing that made eBay successful continues to be destroyed.  I can't believe the discussion boards are still up. I think the only reason that they are up is for eBay's on self-serving purposes.  It surely isn't to benefit "the community".

And as for the constant changes, this house will never be built.  It took me 20 minutes to find the new log out button earlier this week.  I thought I was going to need a hubble telescope to find it.

I agree with Rexford.  With the oncoming "policing" of the Discussion Boards no being able to find links to the community is just one more way of getting rid of the Community's that was the heart of E-Bay from years ago. The current person at the helm want that E-Bay to go away anyway so this is one step in that direction.
I did see the new home page yesterday and it said:  Hi _____! at the top of the page.  I know my name I don't need a fake hello from some computer program all I want is to be able to continue making a living selling on here and one of the ways in which I do that is to read and participate in the CAB.

Rexford, totally agree.

I think the execs couldn't understand what made eBay special so they are bent on destroying it. A lot of buyers don't like what it has no become. Takes you forever to find the log out button/tab, 90% of the time the search doesn't work like it should. Those in power never liked the flea market feel of the site anyway, even though the buyers enjoyed it then; which is why they are working so hard to destroy it.

Buyers have NO IDEA what eBay is supposed to be anymore. Its original reputation is deeply etched in stone. No matter what Donohoe tries to do, no matter how much he HATES the ''flea market'' and ''garage sale'' and OOAK and ''artsy-crafty'' reputation that eBay earned with the support of small sellers... it will be ALWAYS AND FOREVER associated with those things.

So, Donohoe wants eBay to become something that it's not. Yet the one thing that everybody knows and LOVED eBay for being is holding him back.

Now it's a psychotic and schitzo site that really has no identity. Buyers are never sure what to expect. Hell... even SELLERS never know what to expect.

So, eBay just flounders... while other sites and competitors are seeing respectable gains (even in this anemic economy.)

They keep trying to ''dress-up'' eBay... but that's all it is... they're just playing ''dress-up''. For all the costume changes and tweaks, nothing helps... and it only serves to make eBay more confusing than ever before.

Sellers are discouraged. Buyers are discouraged. And both are leaving for better sites...

This game of ''let's-pretend'' may be fun for Donohoe... but the consequences of a floundering and failing site are devastating to the small sellers. Most of whom do not have the ''float'' to be able to endure this unnecessary rocky ride.

With great arrogance and false confidence, Donohoe plows through the water... full steam ahead. Apparently he believes that if he just ACTS confident enough (and lies) then the icebergs that are dead ahead will magically drift out of the path he's so foolishly chosen.

He's the know-nothing, go-with-your-gut, baffle-em-with-bullspit kind of guy. He's the GWBush of ecommerce. Clueless. Directionless. Surrounded by a cabal of sycophants.

Nice post, Annie.  And well put.

He's clueless.  Rudderless.  Surrounded by "yes men" that just keep repeating whatever he wants to hear.

None of which benefits Ebay or it's consumers.  On either side of the buying or selling aisle.
