Etsy Learns Difference between Uniqueness and Availability

By: Ina Steiner

A seller took us to task when we wrote last week, "Etsy Listens to Sellers about Highlighting Unique Items." We said the company had listened to seller concerns that tests designed to highlight "best-selling" items would favor commodity goods over unique items and would begin highlighting "unique" items as well.

"Don't you know that test for "unique" items is based on sellers having 1 available," the seller chided.

Etsy had written that the badges for unique items "would appear based on information we have about your listings" but didn't get into specifics. We asked Etsy for clarification after receiving the letter from the seller but didn't receive a response.

On the forums, a seller explained how the issue impacted her. "I just did an Etsy search for my shop name, and noticed that some of my items appear with the "One of a kind" badge - but they're not! It appears on some of my hand-printed t-shirts, the ones where there's only one in stock."

She went on to explain, "I'm concerned that this could be very misleading and may even be seen as me misrepresenting my products?! I understand OOAK to be unique creations where only one is ever made - not items that only have one left in stock!"

A few days later, Etsy updated its announcement yet again to say it would change the badge from reading "one of a kind" to "only 1 available," acknowledging seller concerns: "...we hear and understand your concerns about the one-of-a-kind badge. We will no longer be showing the one-of-a-kind badge to shoppers."

Etsy also said it would continue running both tests:

"Because we're seeing positive results from the best-seller badge experiment, we're going to continue that experiment and evaluate the results after we've gathered more data. We'll let you know if we decide to launch the best-seller or "only 1 available" badge to all buyers or if we test other ways of highlighting unique items to buyers."

Etsy deserves credit for listening to sellers, but also deserves some criticism for not understanding that a quantity of one does not equal one of a kind. Of all the ecommerce websites, Etsy should understand that concept and why it's a sensitive issue to artisan and vintage sellers.

"Etsy" needs to RE-learn how to be quiet, stay on the sidelines, and just be the conduit through which people have access to some of the Greatest products devised by Americans. That's it.
We need to put Pandora back in the box.
Personally, I've taken time off to repair a badly neglected home because I've dedicated 10 uninterrupted years with Etsy. Now, I'm afraid I'll come back to a nightmare that will force me to close my store for good. Tons of people bought my unique product, knowing they must wait a few weeks for it after purchase. They were happy when it arrived. I just don't know what I'll come back to.....I don't have a good feeling....

The problem here is, things works just fine until all the changes with CEO and Corporate staff. Now we have a New CEO that is in the  "Learning" curve as well as hundred of staff that were let go, and they are most likely filling the spaces with "temp" people, just to have them fill a void, at the cheapest cost. Been their, done that when I was in the corporate world. So they don't know what works and what doesnt, that comes with experience and takes time. This concerns me, allot!! Time we dont have, we just lost 2 1/2 years of sales due to changes and test. Now al lthey want to do is test, to make things better, AT OUR COST!, Their still getting paid weekly, however, were NOT. My sales are at a rock bottom low this year, exactly 1/2 of what I made last year. Each month gets worse, down over 1/2 the sales I made last year, from (June till now), June being the worst, with August behind them.
PROBLEM #1 - The problem with the "One of a kind", is If its handmade, their making more than just one, so it may be a "One of a Kind Item", but not "One of a Kind", meaning their is only one available.
PROBLEM #2 - What the heck is this: "We'll let you know if we decide to launch the best-seller or "only 1 available" badge to all buyers or if we test other ways of highlighting unique items to buyers."

"Best Seller", what is that suppose to do, again, telling people there is more than one, go buy it now.......and "only 1 available"., I sell Antique Dishes and Vintage item, That night be good for me, but not foe handmade.
I sell "Unique, one of a kind, Antique Items.......but that is still concerning, because, others may sell the same antique item as I, so how is that one of a kind????????
If their were "One of a kind" OR "Only 1 available", in the world, then we all would be out of business, because there wouldn't be more to go around.
I WISH THEY WOULD JUST FOCUS ON ADVERTISING AND STOP MESSING WITH OUR SHOPS!!!!!! THERE OUR SHOPS AND THEY SHOULD KEEP THEIR HANDS OUT OF IT, PERIOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!LEAVE IT ALONE, IT WORKED FINE BEFORE GREED TOOK OVER...........

Etsy could use a field for sellers to designate and item as one of a kind and then they could utilize that field to trigger the badge.

IF any of you truly want results, I'll say this yet again, ...

STOP P!SSING AND MOANING HERE, STOP P!SSING AND MOANING IN THE FORUMS, ...

AND, WRITE THE FREAKING BOD! <---- THEY are the site's decision makers, and fellow RISK TAKERS.

They would be better off showing an interesting and unique landing page for everyone like it used to be.  IF I want to see what I've looked at, I either put it in my favorites or I bought it.  Show me something I hadn't thought of, something interesting and newly listed etc.

All this nonsense MUST STOP - its all happening to our detriment and I don't understand how they don't see that.

FOCUS on promoting and marketing Etsy - that is your job, some % of gross profits should be allocated to that.

This whole one of a kind, one available is pure nonsense and more spinning wheels getting nowhere.

Good grief, are they high school tech students.  There are plenty of example of how things work, how do they not know that.

Etsy stands apart from the rest because of its sellers, not because of gimmicks.

Focus on promoting Etsy and the shops that built it and maintain it,  and you'll have a winning game. All the rest is stupid distraction and a waste of time.

That whole free shipping is another fiasco waiting to happen.  Its all craziness and these tests hurt Etsy and hurt shop owners.  Buyers get sick to death of the changes as do the sellers.

Once a buyer is gone, they're not coming back - what don't you understand about this. Part of their job is buyer retention, and it ain't happening when you make things less appealing, less interesting and force them, like us to adapt to useless changes.

Some Etsy fundamentals that are not understood by Robo Josh, the Admins and the Robo Techs:

1.  Etsy does not own any of the products it sells.  If they continue to alienate their best sellers as they've been doing for the last few years, they will be left with a pile of cheap junk hawked by nameless factories.

2.  Etsy cannot compete with Ebay, Walmart or Target or especially Amazon when it comes to selling factory made imports.  They are not even in the same playground.  If buyers are looking for cheap Chinese merchandise there are places to find it that are easier and cheaper than Etsy.

3.  There is only one thing that matters to buyers and sellers and that is SEARCH. The equation is very simple.  If buyers can't find our stuff they can't buy it.  That means no money on that end for Etsy.

4.  Sooner or later Etsy's "sellers services" as a prime source of income is going to collapse.  All the bells and whistles that the snowflakes are working on mean nothing.  They are just an excuse to keep busy as they pray their jobs won't be taken by other robots.  Very few of these people are necessary for the site to function.  In fact, it would probably function better without the phony "human" techs who constantly insert their own bias into everything from the forums to search.

I disagree with Flying Childers, I'm pretty certain Etsy is already overrun with ''pile(s) of cheap junk hawked by nameless factories.  ''

No kidding! Junk is Etsy's middle name which is why they have no idea what is an isn't one of a kind, handmade or mass produced junk from China.  I can say there here but if I so much as mention China in the forums I would be banned from posting.

Noneya & Garcia- of course you are both right, especially about posting the "C" word.  Probably more sellers have been banned for that one than any other.  As far as junk on the site, hard to believe but there are still some great handmade and vintage items.  Not sure for how long, but if you can stand to keep searching, they can be found.  It's just a shame that 99% of buyers who have the attention span of a flea, won't bother to look past the first page of listings.

The true definition of the word "unique"  is:

being the only one of its kind; unlike anything else:

Period. It is not a synonym for  "I only have one of these." It really irks me when I see the word unique used to describe something that is clearly machine made.Totally false representation.
