Etsy Listens to Sellers about Highlighting Unique Items

Etsy made a change that indicates it is listening to sellers' concerns.

We wrote about some tests Etsy is running to highlight best-selling products, including highlighting best-selling items on search results pages. Etsy had explained, "We believe that knowing those items are popular with shoppers will help new buyers feel more confident making a purchase on Etsy."

But sellers pushed back, citing concerns that the move would give more exposure to mass-produced goods. Wrote one reader on the EcommerceBytes Blog: ""Top selling items" are for commodity items that there are many of. I thought that Etsy was about one off unique and custom items? The sellers from China will be laughing with glee - they can turn Etsy into an eBay clone!"

Etsy has since updated its announcement to let sellers know it had listened to seller feedback and would run additional tests - including adding a badge for items that are unique. "These badges will appear based on information we have about your listings. Shoppers will start to see both badges this week and we’ll let you know if and when they become permanent features."

It said it's also exploring other ways of featuring items and shops on search pages that aren't based on number of sales.

UPDATE 8/16/17: Sellers are reporting that Etsy is simply using a quantity of 1 as an indicator something is "one of a kind," something of grave concern - we're in the process of seeking clarification from Etsy.

Please tell me you are kidding.  The badge doesn't say unique and we didn't ask for it.  It labels all items with only 1 available as one of a kind.  It fraud, deceit, lying and we could all be sued. This is the most egregious test Etsy has ever conducted.  How could you act like it good for buyer or sellers? Fix this please.

Definition of Independent : FREE from outside control; not depending on another's authority. "the study is totally independent of central government" ....synonyms: freethinking, free, individualistic;

Looked at these last night,  a few of our "mass produced items" show up as  "one of kind"

being in business for over a two decades, we would absolutely never label our products with this, we would consider it fraud  if we can't opt out, or can't turn it off, we will have to remove the items they labeled,? we would never deceive a customer with false statements like this.

They just can't stop playing around , I guess they now have to lie to sellers to justify it, an old ebay trick, remember " you asked for it, and we delivered "

It's  horrible idea. It gives the impression that a handful of items are unique while the majority aren't.    SMH.

I can't believe Ina printed this as if it was a benefit to sellers.  I thought ecommercebytes had some commonsense and would look into things before publishing them blindly.  I am so disappointed.

Robo Josh still hasn't learned any lessons since coming on board as CEO.  Just like his predecessor, Robo Chad, he is listening to people who don't know how to do E-commerce.

If the idea is to waste as much money as possible pretending to improve the site, he's doing a great job.

There is only one thing that needs to be fixed:  SEARCH.

Bottom Line Etsy never has "Listened" to their Sellers, they say they do, just words......they do what they want for their bottom dollar. All the things we dont want, they do anyway. Im just so fedup with the way they run things., you call for support, no one over their in headquarters knows what their doing, they have to escalate the smallest of questions.  Test after test after test.....ridiculous ideas they come up with, Sales and Coupons, Offer Frees shipping to bring in buyers........WERE NOT WALMART Our Unique brands and Vintage items DONT need coupons, OMG!!!! ***ADVERTISE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!***********
for us, You want us to get Sales then ADVERTISE ETSY More, spread the word in Commericals and on Goggle, Its really that simple.

Oh and by the way.......Etsy might want to reach out to other selling venues that are doing fantastic with their sales and sellers, and learn a thing or 2....from them (Ruby Lane) for one!!!

Etsy is great!  If you know how to use their advertising capabilities your going to sell your items quickly.  They are an honest and still staying true to supporting the little guy marketplace.  I have sold 65% percent of every thing I have put in since the beginning of the year!  I am very happy with Etsy and will build my store there because they are honest in their ability to create visibility...as opposed to Ebay and Amazon.

One other comment...,most sales in marketplaces come in from search engines...Etsy is the best at creating visibility.  Internal visibilty helps but it is not the most important factor.  Take it from an old veteran...
