Alleged Terrorist Tries Using eBay to Hide His Tracks

The Wall Street Journal reported that a man charged in 2015 of accepting money from overseas terrorists led the FBI to a "global network stretching from Britain to Bangladesh." It wrote, "The case suggests how Islamic State is trying to exploit holes in the vast online financial world to finance terror outside its borders."

According to a 2015 press release from the Justice Department, the man told the investigators that he had pretended to sell printers on eBay that would serve as a cover for the payments he received from ISIL through PayPal and Western Union but claimed that he had never intended to carry out an attack and was only trying to get money from the terrorist organization.

A spokesperson for eBay told the Wall Street Journal the company was working with law enforcement and had "zero tolerance for criminal activities taking place on our marketplace." And a spokesperson for PayPal told the newspaper that it "invests significant time and resources in working to prevent terrorist activity on our platform," and reports suspicious activities to law enforcement.

The report, which is getting picked up by other media, presents the companies with a public relations problem - the headline in Friday's newspaper: "FBI Says ISIS Used eBay To Send Terror Cash to U.S." But as the case shows, using eBay and PayPal provides clues to investigators to track down additional perpetrators and provides prosecutors with documentation.

eBay [has] "zero tolerance for criminal activities taking place on our marketplace."

If that is the case, why aren't they making more of an effort to remove all the buyers who scam sellers by consistently claiming SNAD or "renting" and returning items?

Anyone who doesn't think that Ebay is a partner in this stuff has oatmeal for brains. Ebay allows the thieves, scammers, liars etc to thrive on their site.

The give a lot of hot air mouthing defending how upright and outstanding they are. In fact they are corrupt to the rotten core.

Unless the press does not pick it up...then it's ok.

How does a company claiming ''zero tolerance'' for criminal activity justify a stated public policy that a seller must 'suck it up' when such criminal activity is clearly documented (and agreed with) during attempts to resolve undeserved consequence?

How does a company that clearly researched, investigated and SUGGESTED counterfeit item candidates to overseas manufacturers for them to offer justify a claim of ''zero tolerance'' for such criminal activity?

How does a 'spokesperson' sleep at knight after uttering this wholly hypocritical propaganda while a significant portion of their salary is being paid for BY proceeds from eBay's 'tolerance' of such criminal activity?

Lack of consequence.  Same reason eBay and PP have become an 'ideal' platform for e-criminal enterprise.

THAT's what's REALLY 'terrifying'.

I have long wondered how much gift cards selling for full face value (and often above face value) factor into criminal enterprise?

eBay execs sleep at night after lying and defrauding because they are sociopaths- they have no conscience and they will not change. eBay even allows child porn photos to be sold. I reported this and the seller is not banned, for listing some 21 photos of young boys, for $4995, local pick up only.
