Etsy Is Testing Changes to Search

By: Ina Steiner
Sponsored Link
Etsy kicked off several tests on Tuesday to spur sales. One "experiment," as it calls such testing, is a change to its Search feature.

"During the experiment, some members may notice that we've moved existing filters from the left hand side of search results pages to the top of the pages. In addition to making filtering options more visible, this change will give us space for an additional column of listings on search results pages."

It noted that it was also in the process of improving category-specific filtering options and said it would notify sellers as new listing attributes and filters become available.

Many sellers are getting frustrated at some of the changes taking place on Etsy - and marketplaces rarely get specific about results of testing, leaving it to sellers to take it on faith that changes they ultimately roll out are truly beneficial to all sellers.

Etsy also announced additional experiments today. In one test, Etsy is adding a verification designation to reviews in a bid to boost sales by making shoppers more confident in their purchasing decisions. It's also testing a change to how it displays transit times to buyers.

Let us know if you're seeing signs of these tests and if you think they'll boost sales.

Etsy's 400+ programmers just don't get it.. or the GREED of the site is just to powerful.. They love the dark side. Unfair Evil site designed to collect fees and give nothing in return. Designed to sucker sellers in to promoting while the do you as your back is turned.

They do not want a search They want to send customers to the sellers they select. That is what their search (joke) is all about. This move is nothing but more crap window dressings to fool the investors. an out of the box free search would be 100x as good as what they have now and they could fire the 400+ useless programmers.... ALL of them... FIRE THEM.

search is supposed to be a TOOL for buyers to find what they want to buy. The item title of your listings are NOT in the search Data base. is this not the stupidest thing you have ever heard. It is true. Only the tags.. the search is run off the tags. The world's stupidest search resides at Etsy and run by the world's stupidest overpaid useless IT employees.

So as far as their trying to fix things... Dream On.. when they nuke the existing search and set one up based on the title and categories.. then I will be dumb enough to almost believe them?

In my opinion, its a big joke and stupid for what they could have had, but choose not to do. Many other venues charge one fee and your seen everywhere, Etsy, either is that stupid that they cant figure this simple task out or playing stupid to make investors see what they want, The worst thing they could of ever done was to go public, just GREED! Thanks Chad, Im sure your sitting pretty with all your millions, screw the rest of us.....And the new CEO, hasn't said a word on anything else that I saw, so if you sell on Etsy, and your not in their click of shops, your screwed! period, go find another venue to sell on, that simple

I remember when search actually worked on Etsy. That was when we were getting lots of orders there. Visibility = orders.

Now?  Not so much.

From the Etsy statement above:

''....moved.... filters from the left hand side.... to the top of the pages''
''....will give us space for an additional column.... on search results pages.''

Another great move by Etsy, apparently after much thoughtful discussion.  Actually, this is how that Etsy meeting probably went:

New, Inexperienced Guy: (Nervously stands up, and addresses the others gathered around the rooftop juice bar):  ''We should fix search, everyone I talk to says it doesn't work right.  On the forums they say it brings up irrelevant stuff, and that they can't even find their own stuff.''

Experienced, Team Leader:  (Sipping a Virgin PinaColada, with avocado slices): ''No time for that you silly boy.  But if we move the filters we get more room for results.  That way, it will be like browsing, only they won't know they're doing it.  So, it's like taking them directly to a Collection. ''

New, Inexperienced Guy:  ''But won't that just keep showing them the stuff they don't want?

Experienced, Team Leader:  ''You're not listening silly.  So  if we can get them to browse, we don't need search at all.”  So this will like, be sort of like a Trending Collection.”

New, Inexperienced Guy: “Look, I'm new here, but that's not what they searched for, Won't they give up, and go somewhere else?

Experienced, Team Leader:  ''Oh yeah...... Like OMG....... So, like just exactly WHERE do you think they can go?

New, Inexperienced Guy: “Yeah, I guess.  Anyway I sure like these “Eatsy” lunches.  Love the bridge.  How will this all work?

Experienced, Team Leader:  ''GREAT.  So, I actually got the idea from an Ebay Announcement last week!  Here, I made a handout that shows how Ebay explained it.”

New, Inexperienced Guy: “You actually go to Ebay?''

Experienced, Team Leader:  ''Well, I have to in order to find out how much to price my stuff for.  You're new, but you see you can't get sold prices on Etsy, and now you can't even see a lot of the sold items.  So, take a looksee at the handout.......''

HANDOUT FROM TEAM LEADER SAYS:
Welcome to the new eBay Shopping Experience
(And right under that in smaller letters:)
“If you prefer, just view search results''
►Shop by Brand
►Best Selling
►Hot This Week

New, Inexperienced Guy: “WOW.  This is an AWESOME Idea!.”  Are we going to have a Crafternoon after lunch?

I think removing the listing title from search results is a good thing.
There are simply too many listings out there which have titles that consist of so many nonsensical words it makes it difficult to tell what is being sold.
Many include popular words which have little or nothing to do with their item simply to show up in the results more.
I think that most items can be adequately described using the thirteen tag words and then the title could be clear sentence instead of a bunch of words crammed together.

@Writings on the Wall

Just about everything cited in this article also occurred and is still occurring on ebafia.

Etsy's death spiral will come much faster. It's already well on its way.

These two venues choose not to understand who their customers are and who pays for the free catered lunches and free vending machines.

Whoever said there's no such thing as a free lunch never met Josh Silverman.

While people berate Amazon 24/7 (and theres plenty to comment on) at least you can always be sure of one thing - the MOST IMPORTANT PART OF ECOMMERCE ......

THEIR SEARCH WORKS!

eBay and Etsy still havent learned. Oh sure they know but they dont care - no one needed Cassini or Etsys new search ... but its all for the love of money - and the hell with your sellers.

Amazon knows that if you DONT find what you want you will go somewhere else (Walmart) and that CANT happen.

Keeping buyers happy (and sellers since their items are moving) makes the site work and everyone is happy (sorta).

Yes (again) Amazon does some rotten nasty stuff - but this isnt about comparing returns policies or even listing practices - its simply about search.

The game can only go on for so long before you run out of games. Painting a decrepit building WONT make it not collapse.

NO neither sites are going away ... it just means that they will continue to raise fees to cover the poor numbers (Hello eBay Motors new fees). As the numbers decrease, the sites will lean even more heavily on "the boys" ... and the rest of us will just move on since it will be a waste of time.

Greed always has the same effect ...

And that is it in a nutshell. Hell bent on putting the mega enterprise sellers and the Asians front and center, no matter what the outcome.

The best thing about these Etsy atrocity articles is the hysterically funny comments that they provoke. MaxMad, Building my own and some of the others totally nailed it.  I actually did LOL.

I usually read ECB in the morning before I go to my Etsy shops so that I know what to expect.  Most of the time, the comments do not begin to do justice to the mess that was often created overnight.
Last  night was no exception.

It's like looking in a fun house mirror.  Other people can't see what I see or at least I don't know if they do.  And when I look at my own listings anonymously, they are way different than when I check them out from my desktop or tablet.

In the last couple of weeks, I have finally started cutting down on renewals and advertising, and it will soon be down to zero.

No matter what I do, no matter how much I pay, I still can't get found in their lousy disgusting search.

Meanwhile- there is one particular Etsy cheerleader on the forums who I am sure must be either an employee or getting some kind of kickback for her phony comments.  She is a jewelry seller on the "Sellers Loosing 80% of sales" thread and she never stops bragging about how great her stuff is and how much she sells.  DW Rabbit knows her well I'm sure.  No matter what this woman says, no matter how vile, she never gets muted or has her posts removed.   She is allowed to viciously attack other sellers as long as she keeps spreading the propaganda.  It is quite sickening.

Thank God we have ECB and SA where you can still write the truth about what is going on with E-commerce these days.

This is a huge joke. No sales on my Etsy site, even adding a bunch of new ads (supplies) that are normally popular. Just got a bill for my promotions. Sales: 0.00. Not happy. Am thinking of eCrater...?

I heard that Etsy hired this search-engine genius who used to work for Microsoft, Hugh something or other, to head up the changes to their search.

He said that the Etsy search engine is just getting "old" and "aging", 'cause software does that, it "ages" and just gets worn out, and that it was just time to upgrade the old software so that it wouldn't be "old" anymore.
