Etsy Demoralizes Sellers Who Promote via Social Sites

By: Ina Steiner
Sponsored Link
Etsy sellers who have spent time and effort promoting their listings on social networking sites are upset due to a change the marketplace made to their listings. Now when someone clicks on a link to their listing from a social networking site, they see other sellers' listings front and center, rather than the sellers own item being featured.

One seller described how devastating the situation was for her.

A reader told us about another case: "A seller who has over 30,000 sales started the following thread because when she clicked on her Pinterest photo, her photo was crowded out with photos and links to other shops. This is theft. She has had a shop for over ten years, over 30,000 sales and they are dispersing her work to other shops." The discussion thread links to images that show exactly why the new practice is so upsetting to sellers.

We reached out to Etsy today to see if there was a workaround but have yet to hear back, stay tuned.

They have actually been doing this fro many months. They have just now come clean about it and it is a surprise to a lot of sellers because most of them assume everything is what they see when they look at their pages. Unless you are going off etsy and tracing the searches back to your own items you have no idea what they have been doing. I've been seeing it for months. Have talked about in the forums, have asked about it in Bugs forums but they never admit anything they do that is underhanded. I imagine it might have something to do with some sort of "covering their butts legally". I am no longer selling there but try to keep up when I cna. I know that they just recently changed their "House Rules" again for the 2nd time in less than a year. They changed them after they were called to task on the SEO experiments that tanked many sellers shops in the fall of 2016.

Etsy must have taken lessons from United Airlines--They beat their customers (the sellers) not the competition. Seriously, the site is imploding in real time... One faux pas after another.  They have discounted the power of social media to publicize the PR disasters.

eBay has been showing other people's listings on a sellers listing page for yrs now, that it comes from Pinterest is any different??????

It's a simple case of not getting what you pay for. That's exactly why eBay gives out free listings - NOT to get you to list but to avoid legal issues where you are paying for a service you don't get

2 Rules:

1: You're on a 'venue' for it's in house traffic. You should expect the 'venue' to promote you, and not to spend your own time and money promoting your 'venue' products.

2: If you choose to promote your products via social network or otherwise, then promote YOUR OWN website where you control everything.

This applies to Amazon, Etsy, Ebay, etc.

Ecommerce sites are cheap these days and don't charge a 'per sale' fee, or shouldn't.

On the cheap, let's say, OPENCART, you get get a host for under $20 a month and the only fees you pay are to your merchant account ( paypal, stripe, etc. ).

In this scenario you can host unlimited items, say what you want, how you want, and NEVER worry about violating some dumb 'venue' rule that changes every year.

Etsy reminds me of a soap opera comedy television show called ,”Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman” that everyone watched in the late 70’s or early 80’s.  It was SO BAD that you had to tune in because everyone was talking about it.  I guess we hoped it would get better, but it never did. Just like Etsy! Just when you think they are finished with their asinine changes, here comes another one! In this, they do not disappoint!
The lunatics really are running the asylum! Those of us who escaped the insanity are just watching this comedy from the sidelines, Laughing our heads off! 😆

Yep, as writings on the wall said, Etsy has a huge PR problem, and one that they have actually created.

I think when a company stops giving a damn about their customers, especially the customers who built the company from the ground up,  it is time to hang up your hat.

As I've said many times before, once a company go public, it is not longer about the customers, it is about the shareholders.  Etsy's managements' greed drove them to go public.

It's difficult enough that they have killed all of our traffic (unless you are a seller of 'mature' items).  Now they are deliberating diverting it away from within our paid listings and independent social media efforts to be seen.

Over the past week, Etsy employed a ''shock and awe'' method by unleashing a bombardment of punitive changes - all on the eve of launching the new and ''improved'' Patterns website.

Naturally, one of the selling points of the new Patterns, is that there'll be no intrusive ads in our listings.

Sure enough, a flock of people praised this 'new' development on the Forums -- all apparently suffering from very short memories.

It is almost certain that Etsy will be moving exclusively towards paid monthly subscriptions and will eventually eliminate the Etsy marketplace as we currently know it.

That anyone would continue to trust, let alone pay an additional $15.00 monthly fee to a site that has proven to be so detrimental to their businesses, is beyond normal reasoning.

I think Etsy is so desperate for income that the only way to get buyers and sellers to sign up for pattern websites by Etsy is to purposely redirect our products traffic pages too our competition.

By taking away all of our paid for and hard work back links from Pinterest and Google and Facebook  they think we will be so desperate we will sign up for a pattern website to not have the Ads / see similar items on our page.

What happened to advertising something because it worked great or because it was a unique, clever concept?

If they have to deceive us sellers to get us to be desperate enough we sign up for Pattern, then Pattern isn't so good is it?

I don't sell on Etsy but I sometimes buy. One of the biggest turnoffs to me is that I will be hunting for an item on Google; I'll finally find it; I'll click on it and I'm taken to a page with a bunch of listings instead of the one I wanted to see. It's made it so that I don't click on Etsy listings in Google. Too much of a PITA.

Does anyone think ebay is any better?  I just joined Etsy two months ago with a handmade item of my own and so far the only traffic I have gotten to my site is what I have generated on my own via social media.

The people who run Etsy must have a collective death wish.

Everything they've done in the last 6 months seems to have been designed to kill the site.

One of the first things they do is to get rid of any malcontents and complainers.  So first they perma mute people on the forums, then they force out thousands of sellers who refuse to be blackmailed into using their phony payments system.

They they destroyed the shop manager and changed the stats so that they are now meaningless.  All of this is classic divide and conquer.

Amazingly the shareholders and investors either don't know or don't care.  At least for awhile they must be making money off of Etsy.

But all good things must come to an end and Etsy will be gone within a year.  Or it will be unrecognizable as the marketplace it once was.

What these greedy slugs don't realize is that Etsy does not own the items they are selling. When all the sellers leave- that's it.  The end.  Fini.

This isn't new though. Etsy has been suggesting similar items for years, this is just a more agressive example of the same daft 'high tide raises all ships' garbage that really equates to 'we don't care who gets the money as long as we get our cut'. Smart sellers left Etsy for their own sites years ago. Another interesting story is the fact that Etsy continues to use a sellers product images to drive traffic to Etsy long after that seller has moved to their own site.

It is just going to get horribly worse. We use to send traffic to Etsy and still do , somewhat. Have a 20,000 follower twitter.. I refuse to list an Etsy Link anymore there. Same on our 6 facebook groups The sellergroup website we have supports members and they can link to Etsy (as is only fair) but it would be simple enough to code Etsy to the depths of Hell where they belong and disallow their url.

as all know and it is worth repeating.. social media created Etsy and social media will destroy it. or the lack of..LOL

As much as I want to believe the next suicide attempt of any of these venues will finally be the one that does the job, I really doubt it.  Consumers have shown that they'll take any amount of abuse from any company that's big enough to keep doling it out.

Sadly, I'm guilty too, having dragged my feet on my own website for years :/

Etsy isn't doing anything that ebay hasn't done. Yesterday I was on my facebook page. To the right is a column that showed an item that I had just sold the day before for $17.95 - my item was a hand made in the USA by me actually perhaps 20 years ago. Curious I clicked on the item picture thinking that was pretty cool. It took me to ebay and another seller's item who was selling the identical - knock off - brand new item. Their price was $5.95! So how are the morons at ebay making money? certainly not by promoting cheap knock off's. And that happened so fast! I sold it yesterday. So Facebook - ebay - etsy - their all in collusion with each other. None of them are doing anything different. After I saw that I went about spending the  day revamping my own website. Want to know the bad thing about all these corporations? Everyone calls them greedy but we are actually to blame for their woes. Who are the stock holders? We are. Investment accounts - life insurance policies with mutual fund wrappers yada yada. We created this  monster.

The point :) if you read my post was - that this ISNT a new thing.

eBay has been doing it for MANY years - has anyone of the Etsyites ever complained about it ?

NOW the greed has come to Etsy - all I said was that this phenomenon wasnt new - companies abusing their UA/TOS's to allow themselves to STEAL from their sellers. And in this case ... by showing other peoples listings "on your dime/page".

Was my previous post unclear?

yes, etsy is following the same ebay corruption,

Etsy sellers can't even imagine what going to come next,  this is nothing, just wait and see how desperate they get, and how much pain this company will cause for it's sellers

We absolutely have never posted any social media links back to etsy, but in the last two months we have had a big spike in views and sales from social media, obviously it's from other sellers links,

Etsy will continue it's quest for money, they don't care who they offend, if they have to get the buyer in the door with your advertising but sell my item, they make money, and that's all that matter to them.

We have filed MANY DMCA takedowns against ebay whenever we see our products linked to ebay (ebay actually hosting the pictures) on pinterest, and we have no sharing allowed  checked off in my ebay settings,

our items / media only get linked back to our own site, period
