Sneakers Offer a Gateway to eBay

eBay showed up at a sneaker convention in November to promote its marketplace to buyers and sellers. Just as with Beanie Babies or movie memorabilia, there are avid collectors of sneakers, known as sneaker heads, and 20,000 people were on hand to buy and sell at the show.

eBay promoted its "What's It Worth Tool" during the NYC Sneaker Con (which, by the way, springs up in other cities throughout the year). In an eBay blog post about the event, it discussed the pricing research tool:

"Brought to you by eBay DataLabs, this uber useful trick displays price and quantity trends and shows you the range of dough you can expect for listing new and used super sick sneakers. You can also see what people like you have bought, are watching, and have viewed recently, so that you've got a pulse on the best times to list and invest on the things you love."

Attending real life events is nothing new for eBay, and usually its focus is on signing up more sellers - something existing sellers often have mixed feelings about since it boosts competition for their listings. They'd rather the focus be on attracting buyers to the site.

In this video via YouTube, eBay Fashion's Victoria Perry said the company was there with one of its top sellers to deepen its relationship with the demographic and to onboard as many new sellers as possible.

By attending Sneaker Con, eBay is getting younger people interested in trading on its site - sell what you have so you have money to buy things on your must-have list. And while they're on eBay looking at sneakers, they may find other things of interest.

Are there other real-life events eBay should be attending? Have you found eBay's What's It Worth Tool to be helpful as a buyer or seller? What would you make the heart of eBay's message to collectors or would-be shoppers?

what could go wrong?  avid collectors at trade shows certainly don't need to SEE an item, or TOUCH an item, or examine an item for absolute authenticity .... nah, they can just sit at home in their pajamas and buy these authentic collectibles on eBay.

perhaps while they are surfing the net at home, they might want to check out the many videos on the youtubes on how to identify counterfeit replicas of those same collectibles.

if we use eBay's example of those ''puma fenty'', which i had to look up because i was unaware that faux fur-covered flip-flops at $80 are a thing.  or a collectible.

but i did find out i can buy them on alibaba for $13 and no one can tell the difference.  however, these same replicas are on eBay for $50.... hot savings!

i think eBay should run this same marketing ploy at designer purse shows, at cutting edge smart-phone shows, at fancy designer jewelry shows... i'm sure there are LOTS of highly desired items that are easily counterfeited!

@pace306
They only show up to events where they can dupe the patrons. They want the most gullible. This is why they are currently looking for new, young sellers. Easy to manipulate and none the wiser to eBay's wicked ways. Here's an Apple, my dear.

''uber useful''... ''range of dough''... ''super sick''... writing that bad sounds like someone's parent trying to sound trendy when making conversation with their kids' friends.
