Amazon TV Ad Reminiscent of eBay Commercials

By: Ina Steiner

Amazon is running an ad on television that features delivery drivers and drones and highlights there is more to its Prime membership service than free shipping. (See Thursday's Newsflash article.)

It's not surprising that Amazon chose to feature its Prime service in the ad - the company made clear its commitment to the service in April, when executives used the phrase, "feed the Prime platform."

And Prime is not just about free 2-day delivery - Amazon told Congress last week it's working on 30-minute delivery thanks to drones, which are featured in the commercial.

The Broadway-musical style is reminiscent of some of eBay's classic TV commercials, such as this one from 2003 showing the diversity of items available for sale ("even a car"), or this one that helped get the word out that shoppers could choose auctions or could "buy it now." This article in AdAge reviews other eBay commercials.

Take a look at the Amazon ad "More to Prime" and let us know what you think.

I love the Audi commercial with the drones holding packages and chasing people just like in The Birds.

I dunno....the drones would only work for someone living in a rural outback country, on a farm, but definitely not in the city like NYC or Chicago.  Too dangerous.

Meanwhile ebay management slithers through their executive suites, hatching schemes to make their marketplace even more unbalanced and restrictive

IMO One of the strongest aspects of the previous managements malfeasance was to virtually cease all advertising and to allow the Brand name to degrade and diminish

Say what you will but the Amazon commercial was fresh, it was interesting, and it served to imprint the Amazon brand in its viewers

Meanwhile ebay hoards their cash, refuses to do anything other then email couponing, and is obviously waiting for the inevitable buyout so the golden parachutes can be deployed

It really makes me sick to see how badly ebay has been and continues to be mismanaged

ebay too busy taking peoples money to pay attention to spending any money to promote its sellers, I think the seller to buyer ratios are 4 to 1 now

The only place it will work is in the big cities, out in the country these things will get shot down quick. What a waste of time and money.

Our politicians really need to wake up and get ahead of this drone situation. Most of our political leaders have the technological saavy of a snow pea.

I see all kind problems associated with drones.  If you simply look at some of the problems that have already occurred with their limited use--well multiply that by the thousands.

There is already enough noise pollution out there.  Do we really want to live in a world that is constantly buzzing with drones overhead at all hours of the day and night?
