Devin Wenig to Make Changes to eBay Search?

By: Ina Steiner

eBay is at its best when we enable small and medium-sized brands and merchants to present unique inventory to shoppers who love to shop, Devin Wenig told Internet Retailer

Wenig heads eBay Marketplaces and will become CEO of eBay after the breakup with PayPal in the third quarter.

"By finding new ways to highlight eBay's unique selection, Wenig aims to turn eBay into a "discovery-based marketplace" where value-oriented shoppers stumble upon and buy items they might not have known about, or thought about buying," Internet Retailer wrote.

Like his predecessor before him, Wenig plans to make big changes when he takes over - including better search and better merchandising.

However, the publication notes there are skeptics, and it writes, "Even if Wenig does breathe new life into a leaner, more appealing eBay, many believe that the endgame might be another company acquiring the online marketplace."

It seems what's old is new again.

Well, let's hope this week's ''jumpsuit'' search was not an example.

That snark remark aside, if eBay ever decided to revisit its ''childhood'' it might get a better idea of who it COULD become.  Hint: There is ALREADY an Amazon, Walmart, Alibaba, etc...

"Like his predecessor before him, Wenig plans to make big changes when he takes over - including better search and better merchandising."

Sellers have experienced these promises and the subsequent let downs before. This is the same song, just coming from a different performer.

The problem for eBay is that sellers have heard this routine before and have experienced zero positive benefit from the changes made - in fact, the exact opposite has been the inevitable result of CEO promises..

Mr Wenig is going to be hard pressed to find sellers who believe in him or who will buy into any promises regarding changes he impose.

Unfortunately, Ebay is the s-hitty
marketplace these days for pro sellers.
With FVF fees on shipping + the last USPS
increase, EBay is going to get less listings.
Wasn't that hard to point my customers over to the store web site.

"A discovery-based marketplace? Wasn't that what eBay used to be, what made eBay great in the first place—before the cretinous Johnny Ho arrived on the scene?

I suspect Devin Little is deluding himself; far too must damage has been done to eBay over the past eight years by the current chief headless turkey, Johnny Ho, for eBay now to be saved ...

The eBay executive suite—where the incompetent mingle with the disingenuous, the malevolent and the outright criminal, and the just plain stupid … http://bit.ly/11F2eas

As an owner that sold $288,000/yr year and now sells only $54,000/yr, I can tell you that transparency to the seller as well as the buyer is the only way out. Credibility is earned, not expected. I once had 2,200 hits/day in my store and now I am lucky to get 90 with 5 times the amount of listings. I am still in the black but not because eBay has made good business decisions, but because I survived. Dear Mr. Wenig, survival on this platform should not be the course of action, but instead, the desire to build your community again. eBay used to be a social experience but now, interaction amongst the members has been stifled. Your small-medium size seller has accepted other jobs to take care of their families and need to make money to do so. Where were you when the Ho was siphoning our funds into Pay Pal? I am sure you never thought this day would come when you would be held accountable for your actions. Suck it up, apologize to them to earn their respect again. Until you do this, they will not trust you. Once you have their attention, support them, build them, promote them, but most of all, PAY THEM!

Ok, he has my attention---now prove it.

Like others have said, they've let down small and medium sellers so many times, why should anyone believe him now.

And please, no more search experiments--simply go back to what once worked.  I can pretty much promise Mr. Wenig that if small and mediums sellers are making money on eBay again that they will spend money on eBay again.

C-level eBay management seem to have no idea of what trust and partnership can accomplish.

Just another fox , anxious to get into the henhouse so the remaining chickens can be shredded and digested

Am I alone here or did anyone else actually read this steaming pile of Horse Manure ??

The statements ARE ABSOLUTELY MEANINGLESS TALKING POINTS. It is simply a string of nonsense word.

Generic spin promising nothing, no actual plans, nor specific changes

As I have stated before and will again, anyone who expects the latest hogs at the trough to be any different then the bloated sated group who are moving on with their pockets and portfolios stuffed are deluded.

The last mass of mismanagers walked off with 7,8 and 9 figure packages in return for decimating the company, destroying the health and long term viability of the platform, and destroying the liveliehoods of thousands of dedicated seller/buyers..

Do you think the new group is going to forgoe massive bonus packages in order to insure the long term health of the compay by making short term sacrifices ?

Do you think they are going to rescind the onerous terms under which sellers are allowed to function here?

Do you think they are going to relinquish the absolute stranglehold they have on the remaining seller base?

If so I STRONGLY suggest you try to find the threads posted when meg announced she was leaving. The glorious celebratory postings as to how a new fresh management style was coming in...

I expect More of the same, Intensified. until the inevitable (and fantastically profitable for the management) sale of the site..

At this point I view the remaining sellers as the last survivors clinging to the railings of the Titanic. And frankly I think there was better chance of that liner righting itself and sailing on , as there is of the mismanagers righting the site and surviving.

Wenig is completely out of touch with the mission of the American Corporation.
The mission of the American Corporation is to make the corporation a conduit by which the American sellers (in the case of Ebay) or employees of the corporation can live a normal life with achievements appreciated and expectations met (via the pay check). To reap the benefits of steady dedication. To finish out life in a comfortable state, having given ones all. Anything less is unacceptable.

I WANT to believe you Wenig.

However, the absolute HELL ebay has wrought on my once booming business on ebay has caused me to use other venues to accomplich what ebay used to be able to do.

Why cannot you guys (ebay) get this right for small sellers?

There is no excuse other than ineptitude.

Wenig,...you MUST do better than just talk, and  then putting the hurt on small seller like your predecessor did.

EBAY absolutely sucks as a venue.  It is a 12,000 pound gorilla on our backs.

Either fix it, or we will shut it down for you, by going elswhere, and turning ebay off for good in our business lives.

In the IR article is this: "eBay has to find ways to make both buyers and sellers—both of whom are its customers—know that it understands their needs."

eBay still hasn't figured out that the buyers are not its customers. Only the sellers who pay the fees are eBay's customers.

@toolguy - Interesting that you chose the word "survived." If your sales on eBay were as great as you claim, I would think you'd use the word "prospered" or "flourished" or something similar. To say you "survived" means to me that you're really not making a profit.

Attention Devin Wenig this is to you.
You are talking a good game but can you play?
Are you aware of how many transactions are taking place off ebay now that used to be ebay sales?
Are you aware that honest sellers are being abused because of ebay's 100 percent buyer guarantee that enables fraud by buyers?
Are you aware that the TRS program bases defects on assunptions and not acts?
Are you aware that USPS does not scan all packages daily as received by them the same day? Small towns across America have lost their Post offices to reduced hours and those postal clerks do not scan the packages all the time every day because they cannot or they do not want to., there fore if a handling time is not met it could be that it was not scanned, this fact not fiction, What do you intend to do to fix this?
Are you aware that Gooogle is retaliating against John Donahoe? Google is not displaying ebay items the way it should in its search and it is John Donahoe's fault.
Are you aware at the technical glitches on ebay? I worked on ebay for fifteen years those glitches were not not prominent until the last few years what do you intend to do about that?
Is s neutral a negative in your mind too? It is not a negative in every meaning and dictionary in the world.
Are you  going to lower fees? I can sell my products for a lot less elsewhere and so can everyone else.
Why should more ebay sellers not close their ebay accounts?
Will you answer these questions please?

100% of my income has come from eBay over the past 15 years.

How could I survive if I didn't make a profit?

I'm not Amazon!

@ebay refugee camp

Most of my items show up on Google search page 1 or page 2. Some items are even showing in Google shopping page 1.

But my items aren't common, you can't buy them at Walmart or Home Depot.

That makes a big difference on Google Search.

The nearly unlimited free listings has all but ruined eBay auctions. The sellers love it, but they don’t understand that it has driven away most of the buyers who have more money than they have free time. It has also hurt eBay’s bottom line because a lot of us are obsessive collectors, and we don’t list items for sale until our searches are finished. Having thousands of re-lists to wade through each week means that most of us never get around to selling on eBay because we can’t get our searching done. The same overpriced or uninteresting items get re-listed over and over and over. For hardcore collectors of unique or rare items it has become a nightmare. Constantly seeing the same unsalable items in our searches is driving us crazy. And it is killing auctions. It’s shocking how many auctions for unique antique items have been re-listed 5 or 10 or 50 times. It’s taken all of the fun out of searching eBay. This never happened when sellers had to pay for listings. If eBay wants to save its vintage collectibles and antiques markets, it needs to immediately address this problem. We need to be able to filter out re-listed items from our searches. EBay should allow us to set a site preference to filter out auctions that have been re-listed once, or twice, or three times. Forcing a buyer to see the same auction item show up in search results over one hundred times is only hurting eBay. If Devin Wenig wants to turn around eBay's slow death, start with letting us filter out re-lists, and give us back the wild card search.
