eBay Sellers Ask, Where Is the Free Relist Checkbox?

By: Ina Steiner

Sellers say eBay has removed the ability to relist items up to 3 times, and reports are coming in from sellers both in the U.S. and UK.

"Not sure if you know but when eBay UK put up there fees by 600% they also trumpeted the fact that you now get 3 FREE relists," wrote a seller from the UK. "These have now been lowered to 1. Not good. There has been NO announcement, that's what is irking members when they found out and it has been brought up by several members on the UK board."

One seller said an eBay customer service rep told them the policy hadn't been announced because it was in testing phase. Why was eBay testing the removal of the three free resists? According to the seller, the rep said sellers who wished to revise the listing before it got auto-relisted were unable to do so. But the seller pointed out they could revise listings after they were relisted, "so this was really not a problem."

U.S. sellers are also discussing the issue, and a reader explained she felt deceived since she had originally paid for listings with the understanding she'd be able to extend them three times instead of once.

"What's upsetting is that I paid for a bunch of Fixed Price listings because of the "3x relist" so they'd run through the holidays. And now I'll only get one relist instead, as it appears eBay is cutting the free relists on existing items, not just new ones."

Like other sellers, she said eBay had not announced the change ahead of time. "Very upsetting because I have received no emails, messages, or updates that eBay was making this change."

A similar incident occurred in June, just as mysteriously.

What is it about a free time-saving feature that needs to be re-tested after already being rolled out? Unless it's because eBay is losing revenue with this ''free'' feature. And why not at least let sellers know they are testing (again), so they can work these ''tests'' into their business plan for the holidays, as the seller above was trying to do? Oh, wait, how stupid of me! They would likely just end up changing it again prior to the holidays anyways.

What the heck is going on with eBay? The chaos on the site lately seems to be speeding up with all the outages and glitches. The thing they really should be testing right now is their site's security. Honestly, eBay's lack of transparency on these issues is going to kill the site before eBay/PayPal officially split.

Due to ebays lack or respect for their users, they continue to run various tests and experiments with total disregard.

Don't expect ebay to get better, they are running in ''SAFE'' (for them) mode while they scramble around and try to figure out some way they can create more income for their sinking marketplace.

Yes, many have stated ebay is going down for some time but now it's happening. There is no denying it.

Not only have they CHANGED the free re-list to ONE per but they also had a FREE promo for BOLD and SUBTITLE.

When you item auto Re-listed it ALSO carried this PROMO forward and CHARGED you for the privilege!

I am out $7.50 on this--now--I agree that perhaps I should have kept a closer eye on it BUT whenever there have been promos like this BEFORE they have "Dropped off"  on the re-list.  Not THIS time tho!

At least I saw it on the first few items and was able to go and UNCHECK this===and at least I had NOTICED this at the exact time it was happening--and THAT was just co-incidence.

This site is THE most chaotic run by lunatics of ANY on the internet.

I generally have all my listings end and auto relist on Saturday and Sunday nights. I went from 139 listings down to 40 and knew something was up. Sure enough, the auto relist feature was reduced from 3 to 1, just in time for the holidays! I managed to relist enough listings to max out my 50 free listings for the month with a lot left to go. What really sucks is that most of these ''unsold'' listings were relisted just last weekend using the ''3 free relistings'' option. eBay took this feature away on LIVE listings.

This is clearly a way for eBay to boost revenues with increased insertion fees in time for year end financials. Will it ever end?

More eBay bait and switch tactics designed to throw sellers a curve that benefits eBay's bottom line.

What happened to eBay's recent statement that sellers would be advised in advance of changes?

Perhaps, eBay considers that processes that are categorized as being a "test" do not comprise a real change.

Bottom line, when something does not work today as it did yesterday, THAT is a change, and sellers should be notified, even in cases where the "change" is temporary as part of a test.

If eBay management were seasoned sellers instead of blindly running the company they would understand how important is is to keep their sellers informed so that they can make proper business decisions.

Implementing "tests" which essentially result in sellers paying more to list items is likely done as a insidious way of gauging how much seller push back and resistance there is to the change.

In the halls of San Jose, when an insidious change is made like this, and eBay does not receive hundreds of calls and complaints about the change, eBay's oblivious management then leaps to the incorrect assumption that sellers are accepting the change.

This is another reason why eBay makes sure that wait times to reach customer service are kept high. When sellers can't get through, they can not voice their complaints. When their complaints are not voiced, management simply proceeds to announce that the change was tested and the company did not hear any significant complaints.

eBay has serious credibility issues. Raising fees by virtue of subtracting free relisting features is something sellers MUST be informed about when the test is being conducted instead of simply implementing the change and calling it a test.

Well, one good thing is that you can have a quantity greater than 1 and still get a free relist.  Before you could only get the free relists with a quantity of one.

Actually, I was just relisting some items and the relist check box that that allowed 1 free relist is gone. It was there yesterday, but now it is non-existent.

They could give a hundred free listings and it would make no real difference.Sales are a disaster anyway.

Guess it never occurred to the arrogant suits that run this clownish operation that if they INFORMED sellers of what they were doing, it wouldn't give the impression of total chaos. It's well past time for a house-cleaning at the circus.

I hadn't noticed this until last week: an item that ended with no sale at 9:00 p.m. was set up to automatically relist. When it did, the end time was now 1 a.m. As I hadn't seen this happen before I called ebay and was told that re-listed items needed to go through the indexing process. Won't be using that "feature" again.
