eBay 'Ides of March' Seller Release Brings Major Fee Changes

eBay is rolling out its first major seller release (SR1) today, including news it will launch a shopping cart on eBay.com. In a surprise move, eBay will begin charging Final Value Fees to the total amount of transactions, including shipping. eBay will also hold funds for sellers who don't meet certain standards or who are new to selling.

eBay will reduce FVFs for Store subscribers for fixed-price and auction listings and will leave insertion fees untouched.



eBay will allow non-Store subscribers to list up to 50 free auctions, no matter the starting price. Also for non-Store subscribers, FVFs will be reduced for Fixed-Price listings only.



eBay will eliminate the current 5% discount for non-TRS PowerSellers; Top Rated Sellers (TRS) continue to earn a 20% discount on Final Value Fees.

Other changes include:

- As anticipated, eBay will announce a new shopping cart, which it has been testing in the UK.

- eBay will impose minimum global standards for international sellers as of May 20.

- eBay will launch changes in the Electronics category, including the addition of a Listing Bundles feature and requiring the use of the eBay Catalog in certain subcategories.

- eBay will launch changes in the Clothing, Shoes & Accessories category, including requiring all listings to include certain item specifics and the launch of a new color treatment to help establish consistent color across categories and a Size Chart and Handbag Measurement Guide.

- eBay will make changes to selling internationally, including shipping requirements and visibility.

I for one have a problem with free shipping,the last four items i sold lost money.Anyone shipped a trunk lately,or an ammo box that weights over 20lbs.There were people asking why i charged 21.99 shipping on these items & i lost money.In this weak selling market more fee's on sellers is nuts!!!!!

The whole way that eBay,inc. addresses ''shipping issues'' is wrong and in bad faith.

Given that they are a worldwide corporation that offers services that has sellers selling worldwide and expect that buyers worldwide know worldwide shipping costs and then allow the buyers to secretly rate the shipping cost, given that eBay says that sellers need DC (and sig at US$250+) or they lose their seller protection, and buyers expect ''low shipping costs'', shows their continued bad faith dealings with the sellers.

This new S&H fee just continues along this line.

I, for one, will be dipping into the pooled funds that eBay has set aside to payoff/settle legal matters.

If Paypal hold payment money what happens should the buyer not pay, do they then take money from me after I've already shipped.

Will PayPal also report the cost of shipping to IRS as part of sale???

I just listed 2 items @ $.99 supposedly no listing fees, got charged for both - again!  
I've spent far toooooo much time on phone calling to have the apologize and not see any change in what they are apolgizing for!

I beleive this will all but finish the antique market on ebay.  Most buyers have already disappeared and those that are left want everything cheap with no shipping cost.  Sellers who sell antiques can't really offer free shipping and have already seen a steady decline in the price they can get for an item.  I used to have a sell through rate of about 50% on antique glass & china and now I rarely see more than about 20%.  I've sold elsewhere for the past year and although I don't sell high volume, I get much better prices and no nonsense about DSR's, etc.

In the article ''Executive Says New eBay Fees Help Align Seller Incentives,'' Vice President of Selling Experience Todd Lutwak said, ''sellers could use eBay's Fee Illustrator to estimate the impact of eBay changes on their businesses.''

Horse hockey!

eBay's Fee Illustrator was created last year for the express purpose of helping sellers determine which, if any, store subscription works best for them.  This year's version is no different, and it says so right on the illustrator page: ''Use the Fee Illustrator below to help determine which eBay Stores subscription may best fit your needs.''

There is NOTHING in eBay's Fee Illustrator which allows you to determine the impact of the Seller Update or to compare old fees to new.  HOWEVER, *I* have made modifications to their illustrator so that it does just that.

Looks like ebay dosen't want part time sellers any more. Example I just sold a old hand saw. Using the ebay postage calcaluter it cost the buyer $8.85 to ship parsal post. It would have cost over $15 to send poritory mail all because of the weight. Most buyers want there item asap. So if heavy items are sold the fees would go up.  I guess as a part time seller I will have to only sell items that don't have much weight. I think that ebay will find that all the fun for buyers will be gone from the site as sellers have to up the prices to be able to make any money on ebay.

Another knife in the back for small volume sellers... Ebay now calculates fees based on sale price plus shipping.. This will undoubtedly prompt sellers to increase shipping charges to make up the loss. Net result: Higher prices for buyers, less profit for sellers, more money for Ebay.. Ebay suggests lowering shipping fees or offering free shipping. This is a pipe dream, as USPS rates have increased so much in recent years. How can a seller afford to offer free shipping on a 10 or 15 dollar sale, when it costs $11 for a medium flat rate box. and that's without insurance or delivery confirmation. Ebay already hands sellers a double whammy, by requiring use of Paypal. Soon, we'll be lucky to break even..

Well I moved my selling to ecrater almost 3 years ago for changes way back then. I only use ebay when i'm totally desperate so whatever the changes I'll just deal with them. Once enough is enough for your business you will pick up and move elsewhere. Good Luck ya'll.

Shame on Ebay, the economy is bad and people are not buying things, shipping keeps going up and this makes it even harder to make money on ebay. Some of us sell stuff(not making much profit) something that cost $25 to ship we shouldn't get charged for that. They are way to greedy. I have been selling on EBay since 1998 and I hate when people say get over it, for the smaller sellers and some many of the mid size this really can make Ebay a waste of time when you you can't make money, to the person who says paypal fees are like that and now one complains. We do and we have not choose Ebay had a monopoly its ridiculus, you don't go to the Walmart and they say you must pay with Walamart money! Give me a break Ebay. get someone with Business sense and commonsense! Sorry for the misspeilling, jsut very frustrated especially being someone who loves Business and see stupid things like this going on by greedy  foolish business people!

Meanwhile, eBay's corporate response to the seller backlash is to downplay it.

While sellers are burning up Internet forums, including FSB's discussion board, with vitriolic criticism of the planned new policies, eBay spokesman Usher Lieberman said sellers' reactions in eBay's town hall forums have been "balanced."

"The community understands the rationale behind these changes," he said.

At the same time, Lieberman acknowledged that eBay's sellers are, first and foremost, entrepreneurs.

"They have a lot of different channels available to them, and we expect they're evaluating what the changes mean for their business," he said.
