eBay Merchants Hit by ProStores Outage on Thanksgiving

eBay merchants who use the company's ProStores platform to host their ecommerce sites are out of luck today thanks to an ongoing outage. The ProStores website and all of the etail sites hosted on the platform have been unavailable for hours, according to merchants who are fuming over lost sales on the busiest weekend of the entire year, one day before Black Friday.

At 10 am EST, a merchant wrote on the eBay discussion boards that his four ProStores sites were all down and had been for hours, and reported that all email associated with all ProStores sites were also down. Expecting to lose hundreds or thousands of dollars in sales, he wrote, "The last time this happened we received a ProStores fee credit of $12.00."

An EcommerceBytes reader said his ProStores-hosted website had been down since at least 7:30 am EST, including all stores, the discussion board, the ProStores site itself. "Help has no idea why or when it will be back. I am betting Magento is not down. eBay's big customers get a whole different level of service. At least for now. At one time ProStores was the fair-haired-boy too." He was referring to eBay's acquisition of the Magento ecommerce platform in June after having acquired a stake in the company last year. eBay acquired ProStores in 2005.

ProStores merchants are using Twitter to inform their customers of the outage and to issue apologies.

There is no announcement of the outage on the ProStores Twitter account.

UPDATE: Just minutes after publishing this blog post, ProStores posted an announcement via Twitter: "We experienced a power-related issue at our data center earlier this morning and are working to bring the system back online."

UPDATE: The ProStores website is back online, the company posted on Twitter at about 2 pm EST: "We are now back up and serving storefront and store admin traffic. Our priority is to ensure storefronts are able to receive traffic and process orders. Mail services will follow."

UPDATE: At 10:45 pm EST, ProStores merchants still reporting the email system not working.

It will be much better when everyone goes online to shop and overloads the web sites.

Always problems and bad service but it will never happen to you.

Catering to large sellers is coming back to haunt them. Large sellers listing thousands of items trying to compete with each other creates a cut throat environment and bogs everything down.

The majority of sell able inventory in the U.S. is laying in individuals garages and basements. 1/2 million individual sellers can generate more sales, revenue and put more money in circulation than 100 million items listed by large sellers.

A widget is a widget everyone trying to sell the same one you can walk into any department store and buy. Nobody can give you a good deal because the fees are so high

OF COURSE, JD would rather keep his customers in the DARK AGAIN- no ''announcement'' on the sysyems announcement board AGAIN.
JD- WHY IS THIS NOT POSTED ON THE SYSTEMS ANNOUNCEMENT BOARD so your customers can SEE what is WRONG on this BLACK FRIDAY?
We are losing THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS TODAY and NOT EVEN AN ANNOUNCEMENT ON THE SYSTEMS ANNOUNCEMENT BOARD.
ONCE AGAIN we must find out about these problems on ANOTHER SITE.
1. Are we going to be reimbursed for our lost income Today?
2. When will JD ADMIT that he is being repeatedly HACKED- ??
3. Is the shopping cart problem actually a HACK?
4. ADMIT that you were HACKED and this was the cause of the old cases problem.
5. I suspect that the pro-stores outage is a HACK ALSO.

You guys at feebay are definately HANGING ON BY YOUR TEETH and WE DO NOT LIKE TO PARTNER WITH DISHONEST CEO's who don't know their as* from a HOLE IN THE GROUND.
For ebay not to have security features in place ON BLACK FRIDAY to protect sellers is AMAZING.

Also on a different note, did not John Donahoe say in 2008:

''DSR's are just a TOOL to help sellers, They will NEVER be used against sellers''.

WOW indeed, but not really. Pro Stores has been eBay's red headed stepchild for years. This happens often, and has happened often for many years. Always at the busy times. If my hosting did that to me once I would be unhappy, the second time I would be looking for a new hosting service quick time.

The reason it was not posted on the systems announcement board is very simple. If it is posted there it becomes official and eBay has to abide by their Outage Policy.

Typical. First, they implement changes during the busiest shopping period of the year, then the inevitable problems crop up that always seem to hit the smaller sellers the hardest. I wonder how all the small sellers did during "Small Business Saturday." I didn't see any references to it or any promotion of all the small sellers eBay keeps claiming they support.

I left Prostores a couple of years ago. I see things have still not gotten any better. I use Volusion now, I know I pay more but I sell more since we are up 99.9% of the time, something to think about if you still using Prostores.

This is why my prostore is hosted by an independent retailler. I haven't had an unplanned outage for more than 3 years.

Ahhhhhh!?
The 2nd Prostores OUTAGE in 2 weeks, during the CHRISTMAS SEASON and THIS ONE EFFECTING folks who BIT ON the ''free ads Promotion''????
So not only do ITEMS NOT SELL because of the free promotion GLUT but the system can't handle it now?
I would think that before doing any promotions that you would make sure that your band-aided system can HANDLE IT MR. DSR DONAHOE!
This constant series of glitches, and the lack of Ebay to POST IT ON THEIR ISSUES BOARD is REPREHENSIBLE!
That this system is suffering from repeated glitches (HACKS) DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON should have prostores sellers UP IN ARMS!
About 1 year ago JD was DISCONTINUING PROSTORES, then it stayed around?
Remember when that new 1-day policy spouted out of ebay discouraging facebook friends, THEN they REVERSED?
Now they are pushing facebook friends- WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON?
This is like having a business partner who is a DRUNK- they say one thing, are SECRET about other things and they change their mind about other things!
DONAHOE NEEDS A DRUG TEST.
