Zappos Launches Liquidation Brand on eBay

By: Ina Steiner

Sponsored Link

Zappos launched an outlet store on eBay last week called Great Price Store. eBay's Stephane Tilenius, who was speaking at the Internet Retailer conference on Wednesday morning, told attendees that Zappos launched its liquidation brand using its new Large Merchant Services API.

I can't find the Zappos store on eBay, and a call to Zappos 800 number  resulted in an emphatic denial that Zappos was on eBay, but the customer service representative pointed to their sister site, 6pm.com.

Tilenius also revealed that Mercent won an eBay Star Developer Award (the Developers conference is taking place this week in San Jose). Mercent launched SmartBargains.com and Altrec on eBay, and recently launched MyJewelryBox.com as well, using the LMS API.

Tilenius said eBay wants to partner with large retailers and launched into a pitch of how eBay is different today.

eBay is testing "flash sales," which appears to be similar to its Daily Deals feature but on a category basis. eBay is testing it in the Clothes, Shoes & Accessories (CSA) category in which it offers limited-time offers on certain products. eBay is experimenting in the CSA category and will then expand the program to other categories.

Tilenius showed a video of an advertisement geared to holiday shoppers, but did not say if the company would resume television advertising in the fall.

She talked about "trust" on eBay and said, "We're looking at rolling out a program this fall where we will enable the best sellers, so those with almost no low DSRs scores of one and two, to differentiate themselves even further." But she revealed no further details.

Edited 6/17/09 to clarify that I spoke to a Zappos customer-service rep, not a spokesperson.

You know what's odd? I reported these with one Ebay acct, but the reply from Ebay & another email copy of it came to my mailbox associated with a different account. Weird, huh?

"Ebay seems to be able to find and end other listing violations when it wants to so I have to assume there is a reason behind them NOT enforcing the prohibition against mentioning paper payments in listings."

Ebay ends listing violations that are reported to them.  They really don't go looking for them.  Also...it would be wise for them to look the other way and allow paper payments again.  They're losing money, sellers AND buyers hand over fist with their stupid new policies.

People that break the rules should be reported. That's the way it's always worked. I report my competitors if they break the rules (usually they are newbies who neglected to read the rules), but I don't have time to waste on rule breakers outside of my categories.

An Ebay employee who is breaking the rules should be reported and/or fired. They especially should be examples of enforcing Ebay rules. NO matter how inane they are.

So Herbie, It's OK to you that an EBAY EMPLOYEE is allowed to flaunt breaking the rules, while many good sellers have been destroyed by this greedy corporation's demands we only accept paypal? Why? I have actually been defrauded by an Ebay attorney. A few years ago, his friend brought a widget from me, wasn't happy, told me he would force a return because his friend was Ebay's attorney. Shortly thereafter, started getting email from an Ebay.com email telling me I better refund his friend or get my account suspended. Reporting this did nothing of course. Ebay is not fair. If you have these rules, then everyone has to live within them, including EBAY EMPLOYEE Sellers.

update: All.business Ebay listings still live, 1125 listings still with banned paper payments text that would get anyone but an Ebay employee shut down. 9 months after the anti paper payment rule, still live, but we were forced to remove the text. Ebay is run by Crooks. I guess that best match is preventing Ebay from finding this rulebreaking employee. Check out this listing of an EBAY EMPLOYEE premium:370037211452

Ebay loves sellers like myself!

My sell thur's have been a consistant 90%+ on EBay for over 9 years now.

Some weeks I sell 100% of my listed auctions.

I sell High Quality Tools used in the Aerospace, Auto & Machine Shops.

90% of the tools I sell are used surplus from the major aerospace companies and from Uncle Sam.

It's the best job on Earth "Ebay Seller" that is.

Hope This Helps :-)

Well, Ebay Pays my bills,
provide Ina with the user ID then. Anyway, what do you think, should an Ebay employee have to obey the rules as set forth or are they given a bye?

A search for aerospace tools yields 8 listings, none with a bid. I think I found you, dude, one seller that has car & aerospace, and MANY unsold items. Are you in Long Beach, CA? Pretty restricitive terms. Does Ebay even allow 15% restocking fees? A search of completed listings in your "90-100% sell thru" aerospace tools produces 23 items, 2 sold.Which would lead me to suggest you are full of carp.

Sounds like you're the real tool here.

I sold a bunch of specialized precision tools for my father in law on Craigslist. Almost everything sold and for CASH. The very same tools for sale on Ebay were getting low prices or mostly no bids.

Better not quit your day job...at Ebay!

It took some time but I found a question written by an eBay member asking about eBay employee's violating this type of policy. Here is the comment that was posted on the ''Ask Griff'' June 2009 thread in the sellers central board and Griffs answer.....

Posted by xxxxxxxx on May 31, 2009 8:42 PM

Possible Accepted Payment Policy Violations

Hello, I have some questions about sellers on eBay who are advertising and taking checks or money orders in ''some'' of their listings but not all. If a seller is found to have say 100 or even 1000 items listed and has say 10 items out of the 100/1000 stating they take checks or money orders will eBay cancel all their listings or just the 10? Would they not be violating policy 10 times or would eBay view it as a one time violation? Would the same situation apply to say eBay employee's who state in some listings they are employees but not so in others?

First, read the entire Link Payments Policy before determining if a listing is in violation. Pay close attention to the category in which the listing is placed and the list of categories that are exempt from the policy.

If some of a seller’s listings are found to be in violation, then only those listings that are in violation will be removed (unless the violation is a repeat violation of the same policy in which case we may, at our discretion, end all of the seller’s listings). The policy and its application applies to all sellers, including eBay Employees......

I removed the users id from the comment but if you access the seller central board and bring Griff's thread up you can read it yourself.

Griff says they will remove any post that is in violation and at their discretion may or may not end all listings. It will be interesting to see if they follow through. If they don't then I would ask Ina to look into it.

Checks Money Orders & Cash for payments.

I ask for all of the above in my auctions for local pickup.

You need to only abbreviate chks, mony ordrs & csh on pickup. Ebay buyers then know you'll accept those kind of payments.

I also list my phone number in my ads so customers can call to verify anything they want.

Ebay is so easy to work if you only put some time into it.

Over 9 years of successful Ebay selling.

To the Ebay Pays My Bills:

I think it's great that your making money on EBay but why are you so angry?

Rather than making comments that convey a "I feel your pain and it's unfortunate that your unhappy with Ebay and it's affecting your business" you seem to have this "I hate you because you hate Ebay" mentality. That's the reason why everyone thinks you're an Ebay employee.

Why don't you use some of the 90% selling rate money and seek some professional help to see why you care so much about people feelings towards Ebay.

Thanks for that tip Ebay pays my bills. I'll be sure to cruise your listings & report those in violation. Better get busy changing the violations before you get shut down. Completed listings for All aerospace tools was 23 total, 2 sold including every ebay seller, or about 9% sell thru for the poor sellers.

By the way, All.business sells in paper restricted categories like collectibles and cannot offer paper payment. He sells baseball cards & cases, and Ebay employee gifts. All of which specify CASH CHECK OR MONEY ORDER OK. I think I'll invite him over & see what he has to say!
