Upcoming Changes to Feedback on eBay

By: David Steiner

Feedback on eBay certainly has taken a few left turns since Pierre's initial concept that allowed trading partners to rate each other. In probably the most dramatic deviation, Sellers will no longer be allowed to leave Negative or Neutral feedback for Buyers. There are some other changes, which can be found here: http://pages.ebay.com/services/forum/new.html but this is the most interesting paragraph:

What changes are being made to the eBay Feedback system?

There are five key elements to the new Feedback system being introduced in the first half of 2008:

   1. Beginning in February, buyers and sellers will be able to earn up to one Feedback per week from the same trading partner. Today, members may only affect each other's Feedback scores one time, regardless of the number of transactions between the parties. This change will both encourage repeat transactions and reward good service.
   2. Sellers will no longer be able to leave negative or neutral Feedback for buyers. This change will occur in May, 2008.
   3. Removal of negative and neutral Feedback left by members who are suspended or who fail to respond to the Unpaid Item Process (UPI).
   4. Positive Feedback percentage will be based on the past 12 months of Feedback, rather than lifetime, since it is most indicative of the seller's recent performance.
   5. Restrictions on when Feedback can be left:
          * Buyers must wait three days before leaving negative or neutral Feedback
          * Instead of 90 days, members will be able to leave Feedback for 60 days

It's time to clean eBay up.  The sellers that cant hack providing customer service will be shown the way.

Most sellers right now are low life scum-buckets in one way or another. They claim that their items are better than they actually are. They dont communicate at all. They charge a kings ransome for shipping and they take their sweet old time shipping. Now that us buyers have a whip in our hands that cant be countered, all this WILL change. These pussies will understand that if they want to remain gainfully employed in their business, they will have to get the job done. Otherwise, it's time to put the hammer down ! By the way, the only way to get 5's in the DSR ratings from me is to provide free shipping, ship next business MORNING (not afternoon), provide tracking with the communication, package my order with loving care, and keep me informed at all times what the progress of my order is. If you mess up in any of these areas, your marks will go down accordingly. SO TREAT ME RIGHT !

Let's circumvent their system.  What we really need is a site like auctionbytes to set up a list that will be accessible to all sellers on their mailing list.  Sellers could add buyers to this list as they encounter problems.  Then, if we get someone technically savvy, we can have a button that will copy the list to our blocked bidder list.  That way, we can all help each other.  Of course, then 5000 BBL's wouldn't be enough......

Dean you can't be for real. Your demands of sellers really shows your ignorance. EBAY is @#!$ed if there are many more maniacal buyers like you on their site.

Oh my god, the changes eBay is making...it is over for them. Sellers reputations will be ruined and will leave, then the buyers can go play with themselves.

Have fun freaks!!!

Dean Holloran (Hollered and Ran?), garbanzo, and Dean Burke, and the other schizoid buyers expressing their sadistic sentiments:  Today I received the little $2 item I had bought on eBay.  It was fine, came in a reasonable amount of time, was a reasonable cost for shipping - the seller made about $1 on the shipping, in a simple little envelope with no styrofoam peanuts and no bubble wrap because it wasn't necessary.  He listed, I bought, he shipped, I got it.  End of story.  I gave him positive feedback and I expect he'll do the same for me.  He couldn't give me the feedback first, because he had NO IDEA if I'd then say a) I didn't get the item or b) it arrived broken or c) it wasn't as described, or d) I want my money back or e) I'll give you a negative if you don't do as I say.  As a seller, I learned all of this late in the game.

With eBay's new feedback rules, all of this could happen.  And it will.  Not from me, but from the likes of buyers like you.  And the guy I bought the stuff from?  He's likely to be gone, because a) he sells a lot, but only low cost items, like the kitchen gadget I bought, and b) I bought from him because his price and his shipping charge was reasonable - not cost, but reasonable.  He will not be able to run his business in the same way after all of this goes down.  YA GET IT?????  I didn't think so.

A current eBay Australia petition is focussing on making buyers enter the dispute process before leaving negative feedback.

This approach would help dispute resolution and reduce the likelihood of unwarranted negative feedback.

Please join if you agree.

Ina,

Here are some important points... and questions I'd like to see answered:

1) Under the new Buyer-is-always-perfect feedback plan, eBay will remove a buyer negative if they are an NPB -and- do not respond to the UPI process.  BUT, will their negative DSR's also be removed????  THAT is most important.  (Note that a NPB who does respond to the UPI process can still leave a neg!)

2) When a neg drops off in a year, or any rating for that matter, does the corresponding DSR rating also drop away?  Or, as it appears likely, do we lose the neg after a year, but are stuck with the bad DSR ratings forever?

How about the buyers who buy something, befor even 12 hours have passed they are emailing saying that they havent recd any notifications on when it will be shipped, if payment was recd and so forth.

Buyer purchase and Payment recd say 2/1/08 late pm. Item shipped 2/2 using Paypal to issue postage with DC. Paypal says that they will send a notification to the buyer with info. So what is the problem?

Email back and tell them to make sure all of their settngs in ebay and paypal are set for them to receive these notifications. Customer gets all pissy. Not our fault.

2nd scenario.

We used to send out those ebay emails on payment recd, shipping notification, etc. and customers said that we were sending them too many emails, especially the ones who get the payment reminders.

So what to do, you are damned if you do and damned if you dont.

5% of customers or more at any given time will be untenable to deal with. There are some people you just cant please, no matter what. This is an industry norm.

Actual claims resolved in the buyers favor should be the only negatives against any seller. Not just an "opinion" from these 5%. We as sellers should not be held hostage and either allowed to sell or not allowed to sell by these rogue buyers.

I too will not ever be leaving feedback. It is pointless. Why should I leave FB for future sellers based only on there purchases? And as I can only leave them positive, when they start selling they will look like a much better seller than I with 100% positive. The whole system is a joke.

I am compiling a master list of the comments made here and elsewhere by buyers who are threatening malicious actions becuase of this change in the FB system. I am going to forward this list and send to eBay certified mail. They then can not say they were not warned of this.

Oh, eBay will say that they will investigate but we know what that means "nothing".

The simple fact of the matter is that the new FB changes will do nothing to make eBay a safer or more pleasent place to do business on for either buyers or sellers.

The little sellers will be affected the worst in the beginning as they can not absorb the bad FB and contiue to sell in low volume. Once those sellers are gone so goes there one-of-a-kind products not found elsewhere. This limits buyers choices. Over a period of time buyers "lookers" will not find "IT" on eBay anymore they will look elsewhere.

This in turn then hurts the bigger sellers who count on impulse buyers who are looking and stumble upon their products. Eventually they too will take their products and list elsewhere.

It is the domino effect and we all are involved and a part of it.

I cant wait to see the blogs in the future saying "eBays" a joke. They dont have anything on there anymore thats a deal. All you will have left is the giant sellers who will then charge full retail price as there will be no more competition.

One thing that has me puzzled is Google.

They have the infrastructure, they have the payment system. Why dont they do anything? I do believe there is more to this and that is collusion. The Feds are looking at the Microsoft deal with Yahoo. We should all contact this judiciary committee that is doing this and tell them to look into this also. If there ever was a monopoly on the auction market then eBay fits the bill.

Maybe we should all threaten to Boycott Google also. Tell everyone not to click on any google link whatsoever, especially eBay links. Maybe google can explain why they have not sued eBay for not allowing google checkout? Payola perhaps? Those international royalties? And if that is the case then this is collusion.

eBays current FB extortion policy.

Feedback Extortion

  1.

"If you don’t include high performance tires and rims at no additional charge I will leave you negative feedback.”
  2.

"Pay me $100.00 or I will leave you negative feedback."
  3.

"Sell me all of the items in the multiple item auction or I will get all of my friends to buy them and leave negative feedback"

Not Feedback Extortion

  1.

“The item is already a day late, if it is not here by tomorrow I will leave you negative feedback.”
  2.

“If I don’t receive payment by tomorrow, I will leave negative feedback.”
  3.

“The item isn’t as described; if you don’t replace it I will leave you negative feedback.”

As you can see in the not FB extortion 2 of 3 issues have to do with shipping. eBay clearly states that that shipping involves 3rd parties and should not be considered when leaving FB how then can they say that isnt FB extortion.

We have had customers not receive items from the pst office and we have delivery confirmation showing they received. Why should we be penalized.

Another point is that eBay also does not figure that anything is FB extortion unless it exceeds the total value of the item including shipping and handling. So a buyer can basically say I want a full refund including shipping and handling or I will leave negative FB and eBay does not consider it FB extortion unles the customer states that the want an extra penny thrown in. Kinda stupid policy.

QUESTION FOR Alex, Ming, those of you that seem to be versed in this...How/where do I look in the near future to find any class action lawsuits that might actually take place concerning these new changes? I'd like to be part of them for sure. I really do not believe that several of the changes are legal, especially pertaining to holding funds in Paypal for 21 days or until pos FB is given. I've been reading the blogs for 3 days now. I'm so frustrated. Been selling on ebay for 9 years 3 as a silver powerseller, 4.9 to 4.8...I'm going elsewehere, but really don't know where yet. Most of the items I sell are the unusual ''one off'' kind, not the mass marketed new stuff. So I'd love to know a good alternative.  I'm just disgusted. I thought sweat shops, indentured servitude were illegal? To top it off, I discovered I have a 15 year old bidding on one of my auctions....he confessed to it in an email he sent me with a question about the product!!! Can you believe it! So much for being protected by their ''verification'' system!! Again, I'd appreciate any help in answering the ''where would I find if any legal action is being taken'' question.
I'LL BE JOING THE BOYCOTT 2/18-25

eBay gets a big fat NEGATIVE. Outrageous fees, terrible customer service and definitely ITEM NOT AS DESCRIBED.''
Thanks!
Loli

Boycott Yes. Illegal Yes.  Class Action. Yes. I am an e-bay member. I cannot be discriminated against because I am a seller - I should have the same feedback rights as any member of the e-bay community. What happened to "every member has a right to leave feedback" ?

Buyer protection? I just bought an item that I found to be misrepresented once I took delivery. So the seller is only responsible to refund what I paid. Why should I take on the expense of return shipping? He'll just sell the item again, without any worry of losing a penny. Blah!

Mary, sellers' rights to feedback should be taken away since sellers can, and frequently do  leave unfounded retaliatory
feedback.

WOW- apparently all that cocaine snorted off ebay's toiletseats has finally numbed mangement to the realities of how ebay works. Even worse than rate hikes or feedback skewing is the way the new Best Match search engine HIDES rare and one-of-a-kind items-- ebay's stock in trade!!!No-- I don't really think they are out to get sellers, I just think they really, REALLY don't understand their own site.

And being power-drunk certainly doesn't help. All those golf outings with the top 200 sellers have made them think that's how everyone sells. Well they can go live on Grape Vine Hill for all I care, you can webinar all you want. I'm outa there.

When --excuse me, AS-- the grassroots people who FOUNDED ebay leave, ebay will learn the hard way what happens to generals who won't get down in the trenches with the little people. And the RKsmythes and Wingos who make fun of us are missing the lesson, as well. Superpowersellers are the rare exception- but Ebay the community is REAL. Ebay the corporation are THIEVES. Guys, do not align yourselves with the latter!

Google's integration of portable feedbacks into their Checkout product is the death knell for ebay's proprietary blackmail feedback system as well as the venue itself.

And I'm glad. Glad glad glad. I gave and gave. This is ebay's thanks... Die, ebay. You stole my family's future.
