Upcoming Changes to Feedback on eBay

By: David Steiner
Sponsored Link

Feedback on eBay certainly has taken a few left turns since Pierre's initial concept that allowed trading partners to rate each other. In probably the most dramatic deviation, Sellers will no longer be allowed to leave Negative or Neutral feedback for Buyers. There are some other changes, which can be found here: http://pages.ebay.com/services/forum/new.html but this is the most interesting paragraph:

What changes are being made to the eBay Feedback system?

There are five key elements to the new Feedback system being introduced in the first half of 2008:

   1. Beginning in February, buyers and sellers will be able to earn up to one Feedback per week from the same trading partner. Today, members may only affect each other's Feedback scores one time, regardless of the number of transactions between the parties. This change will both encourage repeat transactions and reward good service.
   2. Sellers will no longer be able to leave negative or neutral Feedback for buyers. This change will occur in May, 2008.
   3. Removal of negative and neutral Feedback left by members who are suspended or who fail to respond to the Unpaid Item Process (UPI).
   4. Positive Feedback percentage will be based on the past 12 months of Feedback, rather than lifetime, since it is most indicative of the seller's recent performance.
   5. Restrictions on when Feedback can be left:
          * Buyers must wait three days before leaving negative or neutral Feedback
          * Instead of 90 days, members will be able to leave Feedback for 60 days

----

We'll be speaking with John Donohoe later today, so if you have any specific questions, post them here before noon, and we'll try to incorporate the best ones in our interview.

Call 1-877-222-0856 and leave a 60 second message about what you think of these changes.

This is going to be such a great FB system. Now a buyer will be a able to NEG you 5 times. 4 DSR's and 1 comment. And thats even if they dont even pay!

What a great eBay.

eBay gets a big fat NEGATIVE. Outrageous fees, terrible customer service and definitely ITEM NOT AS DESCRIBED.

This is insanely rediculous!! what in the world is ebay thinking!!! I however know that if Im doing the right thing, I have nothing to worry about with the feedback thing, HOWEVER!!! I had ran into some insane customers who will threaten you with law suits and threaten you with a negative feedback, man, look at the control the buyers had then!!! BUT LOOK AT WHAT THEY WILL HAVE NOW!!!! Makes me think more about selling on ebay, I dont think it would be worth it, especially since ebay doesnt do anything to protect sellers from crazies out there. My acct has in the past been hacked, suspended, threatened, and for all NO REASON, I got NO explanation, no apologies, NOTHING!! Looks like Etsy will become more popular among the hand crafted items!! GO ETSY! maybe we should all just focus more on our websites than depending on grabbing a crazy customer who might come into the picture and have all control hmmm, this makes me extremely frustrated!!

Oh, no. It gets a lot better than that, Alex!

Now, if we get even one guy who really wants to take us down (some buyer who hates us or a competitor who wants to yank our business out from under us) they now have the green-light from ebay to do it over and over and over.

1. Beginning in February, buyers and sellers will be able to earn up to one Feedback per week from the same trading partner. Today, members may only affect each other's Feedback scores one time, regardless of the number of transactions between the parties. I don't know how you could know that. The rest of us sure don't.

I do believe that everyone should have a website but you will not get the sales and exposure you get from and auction site or ebay. We need to build up the other auction site listing counts so that there are more choices and options for customers. The more auction sites that you are on the better and will be beneficial if any of those start to do the eBay Nonsense.

eBay just does not realize how many incredibly bad buyers there are out there.

Our only defense was the FB to at least warn other sellers and at the very least when those bad buyers got so many NEGS they probably opened new accounts and learned something.

Now it will be anything goes. unpaid items who cares as long as they respond. eBay doesnt do much to them now and like I said they'll just open new accounts so that they can then buy more from you to NEG you more.

I'm sorry eBay but this is just stupid. Anyone who has sold anything on eBay knows this is not a balanced FB system.

My question is what is eBay's real goal? Spell it out eBay!Why can't you tell us the real reason you are doing this or is everyone on drugs in the board room. Maybe it's just "Stupid is that Stupid does"

And let this be our new slogan for eBay.

"eBay gets a big fat NEGATIVE. Outrageous fees, terrible customer service and definitely ITEM NOT AS DESCRIBED."

Wow. every time I think I'll head back to eBay, they go and do something stupid like this.

Don't you just know that the new guy has never sold on eBay, and is more interested in running Amazon than "a flea market?"

I am sorry, but the second hand treasures are the only thing that ever attracted me as a buyer and a seller.  Driving away the bored homemakers and replacing them with importers of mass produced Chinese stuff is driving stakes through the very essence of the site itself.

Sellers can't leave FB? WTF did we do to deserve that? Are there roving bands of bad eBay sellers leaving undeserved negs randomly and maliciously?

I somehow doubt that.

I am a part-time seller - but I do depend on my Ebay income!  I am very, very upset about the changes to the feedback system.  I try to ship within 24 hours, and charge very close to the exact shipping costs, yet constantly have buyers complain (generally the buyers with a feedback of under 100) and want partial refunds.  I feel with the upcoming changes, they will just leave negative or neutral feedback for no good reason at all and without trying to contact me first - which has happened several times recently and it is just maddening!  I've looked into some other selling options, and am considering some, but Ebay honestly seems the best for me - except that this new plan has taken all of the fun out of it completely.  Do we have any recourse at all?  Is there any chance of Ebay changing this bad idea?

I think the scamming and fraud occuring on eBay is probably pretty evenly divided numbers wise between buyers and sellers.

It is usually the buyers who have their accounts "hacked". And I rest the blame squarley on their shoulders for that.

Why are you clicking on those phishing emails. Why are you sending western union payments to Nigeria?

If you dont know what you are doing then dont do it.

The greatest advice for anyone with an email account is one that I follow. If I dont know who sent it, it gets deleted. I dont even bother reading it. If they get their eBay or Paypal account hacked it's their own fault.

That might sound harsh but that's reality.

I have never gotten my accounts hacked or gotten a computer virus. I dont even have anti-virus programs running. Our computers run 24/7 with constant internet access. Why? It's because I have educated myself on the ways you get hacked or get viruses that's why!

The sellers here are not the problem! The problem is eBay creating the system that can be hacked and abused and doing nothing really tangible to protect buyers or sellers. In fact just making it easier for the scammers to abuse the system.

the following was sent to ebay today after i recieved notice that paypal had decided in favor of a woman who bought a pair of jeans from me, claims they were damaged on arrival but waits 3 days to inform me that even tho she didn't purchase insurance if i refused to give her a partial refund and allow her to cut the jeans into shorts, she was going to file a claim w/paypal(kinda funny, hey, how they weren't so damaged that she couldn't use them and btw, she lives in florida-it was a set up from the getgo). i told her i was doing no such thing and she does as she says and of course wins, which i'm still fighting. so now they're returning her money as soon as i get my now damaged item back-i no longer give a rat's ass about my feedback-means nothing anymore as we've been stripped of our last defense against UNETHICAL buyers and get hit w/a 60% fee increase as well-my store closes the day the new fees start-i've always strived to be an honest BUYER and seller. yes, i've 100% feedback too, but folks enough is enough, i'm moving on. i'm sure something else is out there...somewhere. i'm a stay at home mom w/ a baby and a child with cancer, so my options aren't what i'd like but GREEDBAY has gone too far. after i had spoken w/a very nice but uninformed paypal rep they sent me a quality survey part my response is as follows:

"you people have screwed ebay up so badly and now with the new fees and no negs for sellers you have effectively killed off what was once a decent and usually fair selling and buying place. now all us sellers have targets on our foreheads-THANKS!!! i just got screwed out of 70.00 by a woman who committed fraud both mail fraud and a fraudulent paypal claim-and YOU LET HER GET AWAY WITH IT! she had the oportunity to ask for insurance, as we all do, but she didn't. i followed all of your'so called safe seller suggestions' to the letter and this woman herself provided enough evidence beyond a reasonable doubt that she was lying-did you care? of course not. oh and btw the buyers belong to us, the sellers, unless, of course ebay is selling something besides a forum, that we sellers pay for again and again and again. your stocks are down sellers are sick of the continued and constant bullying from ebay. ebay is now a one way street and i'm moving and FYI i'm NOT the only one-goodbye GREEDBAY!"

To Margot: I doubt sincerely whether eBay would ever back out of doing this now. Their egos simply will not allow it. I also believe that there is some ulterior motive behind it that is the real goal and we are not privy to that information.

If none of the above is valid then I think once they see it affects their bottomline they will correct it somewhat, but it will never adhere to common sense principles. They have this mentality that you must do things in such a non-standard quirky way so that you can be called an innovator even if it does not work.

I am in the process of trying to set up a protest petition to eBay that would be for both Buyers and Sellers to sign. If you could anyone who would like to help draft offer suggestions that would detail out item by item all of the cons to their new fees tructure  and FB structure without emotionalism it would be most helpful. I will try later to post something here of a preliminary draft that we could maybe add/subtract to and get it finalized and started.

I am under no illusions that it would do our cause any real change but this also could be sent to the media and shareholders as a backup to what we are complaining about.

NEWS - BREAKING NEWS - BREAKING NEWS

Top Analysts have just deciphered eBay's statement regarding upcoming changes

*******************************************************
***
              JUST RELEASED... READ CAREFULLY!

There are five key elements to the new Feedback system being introduced in the first half of 2008:

1. Beginning in February, buyers will be able to leave one NEGATIVE FEEDBACK per week for the seller. Today, buyers may only negatively affect a seller's feedback score one time, which ebay feels isn't enough. This change will encourage buyers to destroy seller accounts left and right and will encourage small, insignificant sellers to leave ebay in droves, which is what Ebay corporation has been working so hard toward these last several years.

2a. Sellers will no longer be able to leave negative or neutral feedback for buyers. This will enable buyers to name their own prices for anything they want -- to receive free shipping on items, to receive items for free, and to have complete control over sellers.

2b. Buyers will no longer be able to leave positive feedback for sellers. This will enable ebay and its buyers to destroy the livelihoods of many, many, many hard-working and honest sellers. Beginning in May 2008, ebay will automatically leave negative feedback for all sellers; buyers who were pleased with the transaction and wish to change the seller's negative feedback to a positive may do so simply by sending a signed, notorized letter, in triplicate, in a blue envelope sealed inside a fluorescent green and pink envelope, tied with a special, rare swedish ribbon (available by special order only) which must then be sent by certified, registered mail to ebay Inc. within 3 minutes of the negative feedback being left. Some limitations apply.

3. Removal of negative and neutral feedback left by members who are suspended or who fail to respond to the unpaid item process.

[CLASSIFIED MEMO for MEG WHITMAN'S EYES ONLY: number 3 isn't true, Meg,
it is just a bone for the sellers to make them think we don't absolutely disdain them. Be sure and remove this Classified memo, Meg, before submitting the list publicly - J. Donohoe]

4. Positive feedback percentage will be based on the past 12 months of
feedback, rather than lifetime, since lifetime feedback would be more indicative of a seller's true performance.

5. Restrictions on when feedback can left:
     * Buyers must wait three seconds before leaving negative or neutral feedback.
     * Instead of having up to 90 days, sellers must now leave feedback immediately... before payment has been made.

Call ebay at 1-877-WHO-CARES and leave a 60 second message about what you think of these changes.

once the downhill slide began there is no stopping it
i agree with most everyone
but until eBay is forced to acknowledge that WE the sellers keep them in business with OUR customers, OUR stores, OUR products and OUR fees
(and sadly that will only be done by killing the beast we have allowed ebay to become)it's just going to get worse

i say revolution peeps-i'm dumping my ebay stocks as i write(yes i am a stock owner)and downsizing my store and my prices to get ready to close.
yes i'm all for the boycott but more must be done, the ideas are great, we've to find ways to set them in motion
dump your stocks
boycott
look actively for other non eBay alternatives
and then close up shop...
leave
and don't return
maybe by starving it back down to a manageable size, we can have a larger say in what goes on, if you even choose to return. i think if an alternative were found that was viable, i doubt most would even be interested in returning.

We are FED UP with ebay, and finally gave them the boot. They are not getting ANOTHER CENT of my hard-earned money. I have recently started selling with Bidtopia and am EXTREMELY pleased with the results! They offer supreme seller protection and require bidders on their site to pay a .99 fee to insure they have a valid credit card. The fees are minimal, the software is easy to use, and the traffic rivals ebay. I am so glad we finally found our happy ending to the ebay disaster, and I urge other sellers who are fed up to join us on Bidtopia. http://www.bidtopia.com

So lets start at the top with their wonderful new FB system. Rebuttals/Pros/Cons follow each point.

1. Beginning in February, buyers and sellers will be able to earn up to one Feedback per week from the same trading partner. Today, members may only affect each other's Feedback scores one time, regardless of the number of transactions between the parties. This change will both encourage repeat transactions and reward good service.

Rebuttal: I think we should get more than 1 FB counted if it is multiple purchases. but why not just count the total positves, neutrals and negative to be factored in to your FB score? Many buyers buy multiple items at once to get a s/h discount. So does the buyer have to wait a week to leave each FB for the multiples or do they have to occur a week apart? Repeat customers occur because they like your products and service not because of an eBay FB system.

Pros: More positive FB to your account depending on when they buy and when the give FB. Not really clear on this. A typical eBay standard.

Cons: Bad buyers may now leave you multiple NEGATIVES THAT CAN SEVERLY HARM YOUR REPUTATION AND ACCOUNT STANDING EVEN IF THEY DO NOT PAY.

  2. Sellers will no longer be able to leave negative or neutral Feedback for buyers. This change will occur in May, 2008.

Rebuttal: This change offers no value to Sellers and in all likelyhood will backfire on buyers who want positive FB.

Pros: None that we can see. Unless you are a malicious Buyer or an unscrupulous Seller.

Cons: Creating an unbalanced Feedback system will only create problems for both Buyers, Sellers and eBay. Buyers will not care to work out solutions with sellers when they are clearly in the wrong. Buyers will just leave Negatives for any reason whatsoever valid or not. Sellers do not have any options to defend themselves other than leaving a POSITIVE for a buyer who does not believe they got there monies worth. As these issue will affect Sellers performance ratings, most Power Sellers will not realize their discounts. It will also affect customer service as sellers will start getting negatives and stop trying to help customers work out problems as they know that even if they do these buyers can leave negatives with impunity. If the customer has a problem they will be told to just file a claim knowing they will probably recieve a negative anyway. There would be no point in resolution. Sellers FB scores will be affected and will not look as good and safe to buyers causing less sales. Sellers will then list less or move off site causing decreased revenue to eBay and its shareholders.

  3. Removal of negative and neutral Feedback left by members who are suspended or who fail to respond to the Unpaid Item Process (UPI).

Rebuttal: Dont know why this is even in here as a change as this is already the policy but a flawed one.

Pros: Great if the deadbeat bidder doesnt respond.

Cons: Terrible. A buyer who responds with "I am not going to pay" or even just a string of "??????" gets to leave a Seller a negative. Doesnt seem fair or balanced to me.

  4. Positive Feedback percentage will be based on the past 12 months of Feedback, rather than lifetime, since it is most indicative of the seller's recent performance.

Rebuttal: Notice how in this statement it says Seller's performance. Positvie FB will be pointless for Buyers as it will all have to be positive. Are negatives for buyers going to go away also under this change? So the bad buyer with multiple buying accounts will have the old ones look good again? I think this needs to be cleared up also.

Pros: Great if you have a bunch of old negatives.

Cons: Just wait after 12 months of the new FB system when buyers can leave tons of negatives for any little whim. eBay will use that criteria 12 months from now to yank your Power Seller privelidges and maybe even your selling ability all together. Once again causing less listings and less revenue for eBay. And also less choices for the eBay buying community.

  5. Restrictions on when Feedback can be left:
         * Buyers must wait three days before leaving negative or neutral Feedback
         * Instead of 90 days, members will be able to leave Feedback for 60 days

Rebuttal: Another pointless change that addresses no real issue. 3 days to leave a negative or neutral. Unless you overnight a package none of your customers are ever going to get your products for evaluation in order to make a fair Feedback. 60 days vs 90 days change does nothing as most FB is left within 30 days anyway.

Pros: Those malicious buyers will have a mandatory 3 day wait before they give that negative.

Cons: Addresses no real issues and does nothing to make eBay a safer place to buy or sell.

This is just the start for the petition regarding the New FB changes. i will start work on the Fees next. Please add/subtract change edit whatever so that we can make this the best petition.
