Upcoming Changes to Feedback on eBay

By: David Steiner
Sponsored Link

Feedback on eBay certainly has taken a few left turns since Pierre's initial concept that allowed trading partners to rate each other. In probably the most dramatic deviation, Sellers will no longer be allowed to leave Negative or Neutral feedback for Buyers. There are some other changes, which can be found here: http://pages.ebay.com/services/forum/new.html but this is the most interesting paragraph:

What changes are being made to the eBay Feedback system?

There are five key elements to the new Feedback system being introduced in the first half of 2008:

   1. Beginning in February, buyers and sellers will be able to earn up to one Feedback per week from the same trading partner. Today, members may only affect each other's Feedback scores one time, regardless of the number of transactions between the parties. This change will both encourage repeat transactions and reward good service.
   2. Sellers will no longer be able to leave negative or neutral Feedback for buyers. This change will occur in May, 2008.
   3. Removal of negative and neutral Feedback left by members who are suspended or who fail to respond to the Unpaid Item Process (UPI).
   4. Positive Feedback percentage will be based on the past 12 months of Feedback, rather than lifetime, since it is most indicative of the seller's recent performance.
   5. Restrictions on when Feedback can be left:
          * Buyers must wait three days before leaving negative or neutral Feedback
          * Instead of 90 days, members will be able to leave Feedback for 60 days

We'll be speaking with John Donohoe later today, so if you have any specific questions, post them here before noon, and we'll try to incorporate the best ones in our interview.

Call 1-877-222-0856 and leave a 60 second message about what you think of these changes.

I have read lot's of great posts! I am sure hat there are even more that I never completely read.

My old eyes get to weary of reading posts that are all grouped into one paragraph or those that are filled with Caps.

Please separate every couple of sentences so that your important input  can be read without strain.

Posters please don't use all caps and run your sentences together. That also makes for difficult reading.

Kudos: Nina on your poetic genius.

Alex all your great input...legal advice.

Lisa on your Michael post.

Just another ebay victim... for the urls.

Last but not least Denise. Let's help Denise call a spade a spade. Rebecca since you have nothing to hide....Let's see your ID.

Not all sellers that are posting here  have negative feedback or are hanging by a thread. There are sellers that are realistic and see what the scenario is going to be like on ebay if this new feedback system is going in effect.

Apparently, you can't see that many sellers are voicing empathy for the demise of some sellers that will be victims. Maybe, even you Rebecca!

I am sure you are one of those cowards that don't post on ebay boards with your selling ID.

Don't ask any other sellers to do what you are not willing to do yourself. Keep your brazen comments to yourself unless you know for sure that these posters are bad sellers.

Kudos: To the many others to numerous to mention!!!

DEAR POWERSELLERS

PLEASE READ CAREFUL FOR IT IS TRUE

Ebay did substantial research and saw there is a lot of revenge-negatives being given all over the site. They want to do something about that.

I can understand their point of view but you'll agree with me that this isn't the right solution. In my opinion they're replacing a problem.

Think about this problem and try to find another solution.

What you need to do then is mail or call your ebay customer service. I called my ebay assistent in my country and he listened interested to my arguments. It is NOT definite yet. They did a lot of research (read: spent money) so they're not going to cancel this easily. Tell them why you are convinced this is a bad idea. They must see that their big sellers disagree so log in, get in touch with an assistent and share your wisdom.

EVERYONE!!!  HERE IS WHAT WE CAN DO!

LET'S SHOW THE WORLD JUST HOW EBAY TREATS THEIR SELLERS!

This will only take 5 minutes. Everybody send a quick email to the following email addresses for FOX NEWS and NBC News:

ureport@foxnews.com
Nightly@NBC.com

Just say something in the email title line about a situation or development going on regarding eBay, and in the body of the email give them these addresses:

That's it! Hopefully we can get the word out to other sellers, eBay investors, potential eBay competition, and to eBay itself.

If you add a comment to this AuctionBytes blog, keep this request alive by including it in your blog posting. The more people that see it, and contact the news companies, the better.

Ebay you are going to do yourself in.  I have been selling on Ebay for 10 years and am a power seller.  You may it so hard on the seller.  Just remember no sellers no buyers.  If you want sellers to sell, don't charge an insertion fee for every item, just go up on the final ending bid price.  I would list more items if you did away with the insertion fee.  Ebay take care of your sellers.

Ina...do you really think Bill Cobb really cares what goes on at this point in time. Even if he does...he already has one foot out the door.

Proud to say that I've sent the following.

PETITION REMOVED!

The petition on the eBay Feedback discussion board, a thread titled "PETITION to ALLOW SELLERS to give APPROPRIATE FEEDBACK to Customers" has apparently been removed by eBay.

There had been 335 replies when I was last able to access it at about 16:00 EST."

There is another one still running (for now anyway); you can find it here:

Taking away sellers' ability to give retalitory feedback is great. Yeah, maybe the odd buyer will leave undeserved feedback but that will be few and far between. An honest eBay seller will have nothing to fear. The cheaters out there WILL have something to fear...and that's a good thing!

The problem with the new system is prices and risk are currently out of whack.  Ebay does not command premium pricing for its sellers (unlike B&M or amazon) and the perception of risk from the buyers keep bids low.  Ebay's play aims to maximize shareholder value by reducing risk for the buyer, increasing ASP's and increasing the final value fees, driving shareholder value.  EBAY DOES NOT GIVE A SHIT ABOUT SELLERS, they know they have near monopoly status and its not the sellers that make a market, but the buyers.  I think these changes will create a new opportunity for an auction site that caters to the low cost, low price and high risk buyers.  Over time, good sellers should begin to see higher prices due to changes in perceived risk associated with ebay, the question is will the fee increases gobble up the increase in the ASP?

If sellers no longer have the option to leave negative feedback (no negative feedback icon)... is there anything that prevents sellers from leaving NEGATIVE COMMENTS inside the forced ''positive'' feedback?

So, the Buyer who's troublesome, argumentative, can't-be-pleased may indeed end up with an ''official'' positive feedback point... but the Seller can still be HONEST and preface their feedback comment with the word ''NEGATIVE'' or ''BEWARE'' or ''UNFAIR''.

Although the bright red negative icons will disappear, can eBay control our words?

EBay's new changes look like a calculated effort to reduce the amount of work that they have to do while increasing their pocketbooks. The new changes will send small sellers & others scurrying elsewhere, while the increased final value fees will offset their loss. It looks like the only way the seller can voice his protest that will get everyone's attention is to fail to leave any FB. The thing that gets my goat is eBay saying that the buyer has the greater risk. I've been both buyer & seller & I don't agree. EBay DOES NOT do enough for the seller and never has in my experience. Time for a new online auction service to give eBay a run for their money!

I also anticipate many sellers negging many buyers no matter what now. get em now while you still can. Any lttle thing will get a buyer a negative and then block them. If the buyers wonder why then refer to them ebays new policy and how they should be protesting also. what power do we have left.

THIS IS INSANE! I have been on both sides of the fence and it is INCOMPREHENSIBLE that now they will not allow sellers to defend themselves against the NPBs, chargeback scammers, dummies and plain-crazies that have come to be a large part of the buying public on eBay. Are we doormats? I'm looking elsewhere. eBay obviously does NOT GIVE A DAMN about one of the lynchpins of their success: the small volume and niche-market sellers.
