Upcoming Changes to Feedback on eBay

By: David Steiner
Sponsored Link

Feedback on eBay certainly has taken a few left turns since Pierre's initial concept that allowed trading partners to rate each other. In probably the most dramatic deviation, Sellers will no longer be allowed to leave Negative or Neutral feedback for Buyers. There are some other changes, which can be found here: http://pages.ebay.com/services/forum/new.html but this is the most interesting paragraph:

What changes are being made to the eBay Feedback system?

There are five key elements to the new Feedback system being introduced in the first half of 2008:

   1. Beginning in February, buyers and sellers will be able to earn up to one Feedback per week from the same trading partner. Today, members may only affect each other's Feedback scores one time, regardless of the number of transactions between the parties. This change will both encourage repeat transactions and reward good service.
   2. Sellers will no longer be able to leave negative or neutral Feedback for buyers. This change will occur in May, 2008.
   3. Removal of negative and neutral Feedback left by members who are suspended or who fail to respond to the Unpaid Item Process (UPI).
   4. Positive Feedback percentage will be based on the past 12 months of Feedback, rather than lifetime, since it is most indicative of the seller's recent performance.
   5. Restrictions on when Feedback can be left:
          * Buyers must wait three days before leaving negative or neutral Feedback
          * Instead of 90 days, members will be able to leave Feedback for 60 days

We'll be speaking with John Donohoe later today, so if you have any specific questions, post them here before noon, and we'll try to incorporate the best ones in our interview.

Call 1-877-222-0856 and leave a 60 second message about what you think of these changes.

I am an eBay seller, and I have never received a single justified negative.  Every negative I have ever gotten was from a manipulative, angry buyer who decided that he was boss.  Now, buyers will have an unfair advantage over sellers, and will be better able to bully them.  Sellers will no longer be able to issue a warning to buyers who are exhibiting inappropriate trading behavior which can't necessarily be reported to eBay as "illegal".

count me in on the boycott and i too am closing shop with ebay, i'm getting cramps from being bent over and grabbing my ankles time to stand up to what hasn't been a good thing in a loooong time now, and as far as parinoia goes w/little ms panties in a wad rebecca goes:
'paranoia is total awareness'(1408)
rebecca's a mole and she's doing EXACTLY what you think-trying to get our ebay user ids or emails as this is not an ebay forum-they have NO power to park tankers in front of our online stores for what is said here
it's called 'freedom of speech' and it was once what our country was built on
now it just gets you sanctioned
so go root yourself beck baby, you've got too much time on you hands and no one is interested in ANYTHING you have to say here so go back and put your head wher it belongs under Donahue's desk :oP

EBAY is feeding the sellers to the wolves. I support a boycott. Let's give EBAY some feedback on the changes.

Recent interviews with Ebay management show an obsession with Amazon. Buyers would rather buy on Amazon than Ebay. The feedback and other changes are intended to make Ebay more competitive with Amazon for buyers.

Since Amazon controls the  payments to its sellers they can offer the A to Z guarantee. Ebay only does with PayPal payments.

If Amazon does not sell the kind of stuff you sell, you are not where Ebay thinks its volume is. You are probably selling single unit of inventory, used or collectable items.

Many shooting-star sellers of technology items have frequent negatives without impacting their sales. They still are small as a percentage. If you are lower volume, the negatives matter to you, possibly to buyers but you do not matter to Ebay.

Yes they are raising the fees but power sellers with good DSRs will get a discount. That's who they want.

If you want to protest this - hit them where it hurts. Close your PayPal account.

Hello my brother sellers. After hearing about this ridiculous new feedback system yesterday I felt E-bay has no respect for the seller at all.We are treated like little kids that can't think for ourselves. They forgetting we make the green stuff for them.I have been on e-bay selling and buying for quite awhile. Most buyers and sellers are good straight people.Theses last couple of years I have seen a large increase in deadbeat buyers with people that want something for nothing.I have been verbally abused and have to keep reminding people, you bid on my auction so please pay.Now I have no way of voicing my opinion of the buyer if he trys to shaft me..The deadbeats will have a field day destroying sellers now.E-bay says sellers are charging to much for S/H, how do they really know. They don't know the hidden cost in packaging. When a product that has a small price on it,and the postage is 10 times that.Don't buy it.I think most buyers are smart ,some not.E-bay better be smart and drop this new system fast, because there seller base will soon be no more.I'm ready to join a union, where do I pay my dues.

Funny thing is, I would have sucked up the fee increase if it wasn't coupled with the ridiculous removal of seller feedback privileges.

What world do eBay execs live in? Not every buyer is a 100% positive angel. There's alot of bull that sellers have to deal with and we need to have the right to leave a complaint. Feedback is 2 sides, or at least needs to be.

eBay has gone way too far here. Way way too far. We are silver power sellers, with 20000+ feedback, and a 99.5% positive rating. However,we are pulling out come May if this is allowed to stand.

And a message to eBay. This is not an idle threat. Over the last year we've already moved about 50% of our business to Amazon and to our private store to cut down on the excessive fees on eBay. Push us farther, take away our feedback rights, and we're gone. Just like that.

After reading what I just read, lots of Powersellers will lose their status anyway...MY DSR is at 4.6, so that will take me out pretty quick!

ck this from the forum from COBB yesterday

going to give you some time to do this, but starting this July, you will need to have a minimum 4.5 score in all four DSR criteria over a 12-month period to be designated as a PowerSeller (or remain in the program).

Incentives for Great PowerSellers

For PowerSellers who meet or exceed our standards, we’re going to make sure they are rewarded for delivering great customer service. And we’ll do this in three major ways:
Discounts for PowerSellers (for the first time ever!)
Better payment protection for PowerSellers
And for all qualified sellers, greater exposure for listings in search
Fee Discounts
Let’s start with the fee discounts for PowerSellers … Beginning with your April bill, we’re offering two levels of discounts for qualified PowerSellers that will be based on Detailed Seller Ratings (DSRs) you have received over the last 30 days:
For those with a 4.6 and above on all four DSR criteria, we’ll give you a 5 percent discount off your Final Value Fees (or Transaction Services Fees).
And for PowerSellers with a 4.8 and above, the reward is even better: 15 percent off all of your Final Value Fees (or Transaction Services Fees).

I'd like to rate buyers on number of days it takes them to pay, if I can't leave them appropriate FB.  EBay staffers will be overwhelmed at the reports they'll have to follow-up on from sellers complaining about NPB's who they can't leave a NEG for and the only way to warn fellow sellers is to get them kicked off - or leave a NEG with a positive donut.

Why not hire some of us sellers you'll be putting out of business for this monumental task of better monitoring seller's complaints about buyers?

Hi John, I'm furious about the feedback too...But what about the 7% plus increase in final value fees?? You certainly didn't brag about that on the list of ''look what we've done for you'' items! Do you feel Sellers as a whole are stupid and will just overlook that...or maybe you think we can't do math? I've seen eBay employees trying to put out the feedback fires on your own message boards....but they certainly can't put a good spin on the FVFs... Did Meg dream all this up before she left? Was she trying to recoup losses from eBays other bad decisions? This will not be good for an already wounded eBay.

This is great. I have sold and bought. Let the sellers move elsewhere if they don't agree. I have been sold broken items and extremely bad packaged items and slapped with negative feedback. If ALL trading, buying and selling, were kept honest and open we wouldn't have negative feedback anyway. Issues can be resolved before any feedback is posted, If both parties cooperate.

Since they announced this new feedback and fee structure, eBay stock is declining, seller's are leaving eBay for other sites.  It is a sad state of affairs.  Whomever is in charge of eBay better do some serious thinking.  eBay is going to hades in a hand basket.  Investors are running scared as eBay stocks tank.

What I dont understand is eBay encouraged us sellers to leave negative fb to buyers who did not communicate so that we would then use FB resolution or mutual FB. They encouraged us to do this so as to educate buyers who would leave negatives without any communication.

Now, they use this same reasoning as to why they are implementing this. Because sellers were retaliating against these poor buyers who did not know any better. It sounds like eBay set up this whole situation in the first place.

And I also believe that this was done to cover the huge rate increases.

eBay does not seem to understand that you cant fix stupid. Dumb buyers need to just go away and they now have taken away any ability to make them go away and warn other sellers about them.

eBay also has the gall to try and tell me how much s/h I can charge. All of my items state exactly what s/h will be and how it will be shipped. No surprises. Yet I constantly get ripped by buyers who say they paid too much. Why did you buy then is my question. The true cost of any item is what you pay in total for it. What comes out of your pocket is what it costs. Customers dont seem to understand postal rates and that a 2 oz package with delivery confirmation is $1.48 in postage alone. Lets not talk packaging materials or labor or the gas it costs going to the post office. If you pay wages of $12.00 an hour to have packags done and it takes 5 minutes that is still $1.00 and we have not even figured in the other employee costs like workers comp, soc sec., etc. The point is there are many ways to factor costs into s/h that the customers have no clue about but they are quick to complain even when they are told upfront what those will be. Hey, you dont like what I am charging, dont buy! You would think it would be simple enough.

One of the oldest selling strategies is selling something for nothing. Everyone knows the Video Professor, right? Well he cnat sell stuff on eBay the way he does on commercials. Yeah, thats right/ He will send you his disks and they cost you nothing! You only pay $9.99 s/h for each disk. It is an old selling strategy that works.

eBay could have left all the fees alone and just started charging on the full price of the items with s/h. Just like what paypal fees are based on. Then they would not have to worry about so-called excessive s/h charges.

Yes, we need to educate the buyers as to what eBay is really doing to us sellers and how the prices they have paid for eBay items in the past is going to go up because of these new policies. These new policies will take sellers off eBay which will then take products off eBay and there will be more competition for buying those products and it will be the customer that pays more.

I for one will be leaving no FB whatsoever for anyone starting now. If buyers wonder why I will tell them why and why they should email eBay and protest this stupid silly change to the FB system.

For so long it has been a love/hate relationship.  Sellers loved ebay and ebay hated sellers.  Now I believe it can safely be said that it is a hate/hate relationship.  Keep up the good work ebay!

Amazon already has "cherry-picked" a lot of eBay's high-volume sellers, Steiner said.

EBay shares fell 75 cents, or 2.8 percent, to $26.12 Tuesday.
