Upcoming Changes to Feedback on eBay

By: David Steiner

Feedback on eBay certainly has taken a few left turns since Pierre's initial concept that allowed trading partners to rate each other. In probably the most dramatic deviation, Sellers will no longer be allowed to leave Negative or Neutral feedback for Buyers. There are some other changes, which can be found here: http://pages.ebay.com/services/forum/new.html but this is the most interesting paragraph:

What changes are being made to the eBay Feedback system?

There are five key elements to the new Feedback system being introduced in the first half of 2008:

   1. Beginning in February, buyers and sellers will be able to earn up to one Feedback per week from the same trading partner. Today, members may only affect each other's Feedback scores one time, regardless of the number of transactions between the parties. This change will both encourage repeat transactions and reward good service.
   2. Sellers will no longer be able to leave negative or neutral Feedback for buyers. This change will occur in May, 2008.
   3. Removal of negative and neutral Feedback left by members who are suspended or who fail to respond to the Unpaid Item Process (UPI).
   4. Positive Feedback percentage will be based on the past 12 months of Feedback, rather than lifetime, since it is most indicative of the seller's recent performance.
   5. Restrictions on when Feedback can be left:
          * Buyers must wait three days before leaving negative or neutral Feedback
          * Instead of 90 days, members will be able to leave Feedback for 60 days

It's obvious that the morons who thought this up have not sold on ebay and have never experienced deadbeats or con artists. This new system, if it actually goes into affect, will only bring more cons out to scam good sellers. And us sellers will not even know who they are when all we see is positive feedback. Ebay, I think you just wrote your death sentence! If this goes through, I'll be finished with you. You can't make more money with good sellers leaving you.

OF COURSE THE NEW FEEDBACK SYSTEM IS LUDICROUS!! I fell down laughing when I read it - totally Big Brother. But it is the best smokescreen technique that I ever saw...and apparently, it's working very well. You see, the final value fees were raised from 3.5% to 8.5% in the largest selling category, $24 - $50. THIS was announced as "great news!!" Because sellers with GOOD FEEDBACK get a 15% discount on the new, improved, grossly inflated fees. They smoked everyone out and they're laughing all the way to the bank.

So what is ebay going to do when sellers start getting negs for an item that was shipped out right away but took too long(according to the buyer)to arrive because of the shipping company? Sellers do not have control over how long it takes an item to arrive after its been shipped! Also many buyers DO NOT REALIZE THAT SHIPPING FEES HAVE BEEN RAISED BY THE SHIPPING COMPANYS and thats why sellers have raised the shipping prices! Also packing supplies are not cheap! All this will lead to negs that is not fair to the seller!

Whats ebay going to do when sellers get threatened negs if they don't issue a partial refund even though the seller has asked for their item to be returned for a full refund for the buyer? This is not right ebay no matter how you cut it!!

re: demands a refund or they will leave negative feedback. AND, now I can't do anything about it-either receive a negative or give them their money back.

That would be "Feedback Extortion"

... and all you have to do to stop that kind of buyer in their tracks is forward that email to eBay and advise buyer that it is a violation of eBay policy and that you have forwarded their attempt at extortion to eBay for suitable action.

It is quite obvious that eBay management does not sell on eBay regularly to understand the communities real needs. Amazon and Ubid have no listing fees. You pay on the back end. Plus Both handle payment and customer service. eBayers don't need more headaches.

re: where is the incentive to file an Unpaid Item Notice?  So the buyer receives the Notice, gets mad, decides to be spiteful, and boom...a big ole NEGATIVE is left, ...

The "incentive: is here:

We will remove, not just de-score, negative and neutral feedback when a buyer doesn't respond to the Unpaid Item process.

IOW, the neg disappears, totally

5.  With this change auction buyers can (and will) actively coerce (post sale) for reduced prices from sellers.

6.  Given DSR feedback is anonymous and the severe penalties attached to it; online competition will find it an easy and attractive option for torpedoing   other competitors.  If you've ever experienced click fraud, just wait till you get hit with DSR fraud!

To add insult to all the above, don't fool yourself into thinking eBay only makes money from sellers. They own Paypal and both the buyer and the seller pay for "currency conversions" for international buys. Greed is the name of the game. I would love to join the boycott. Name when.

Let me do the math here. Say I list 1000 items in my store at $9.99 and 100 of them sell. It costs me $50.00 in listing fees and $99.90 in final value fees for a total of $149.90 In the new fee structure I will pay $30.00 in listing fees and $119.88 in final value fees for a total of $149.88 this is a whopping $.02 savings in a month. Gee thanks so much ebay for lowering my store fees a whopping .01% and still not have the store listings showing up on search results.

Now lets look at auction listings. Say I list 50 items at $9.99 with no gallery pic. Now that everyone will get gallery it would be a moot point and nothing would stand out anyway. The insertion fees at present would be $20.00 say 10 of those items sell per day. Final value fees are $5.24 with the total being $25.24 With the new fee structure it would be $17.50 insertion fees and $8.74 final value fees for a total of $26.24 thats not a savings that is an increase of $1.00 per day more I would be paying.

So where exactly are these great savings eBay is stating?

I really dont like it when someone pisses on my back and tells me it is raining.

Do the math yourself. This is scam by eBay and to tell us that we should be happy with this new fee structure is absurd and really tries my patience. We sellers are better at math than eBay and they should really count the number of negative comments to this whole fiasco they have created.

The only way I am going to make more money on eBay is to sell more product and how exactly is eBay going to help with that when the fees just increased and they are only empowering buyers to punish us sellers and erode our profits even more.

All of costs went up on shipping supplies and gas and postage. We raise out shipping and handling and every buyer is complaining that we are gouging them. this is ridiculous.

If I could find another avenue to spend my $2,000 advertising Budget (ebay fees) and get the same results I would leave in a heartbeat.

Any suggestions that would work?

I'm no lawyer but this certainly sounds like a violation of fair trading practices.  Hopefully someone will challenge this in court.  If it is not a violation of law, it is certainly unethical.  But then this is coming from a company that misleads its stock holders, misleads the press, misleads its sellers and misleads their own customer base.  They want their sellers to meet a level of expectation that they themselves don't adhere to.  Very sad.

Boycott dates February 17th and February 18th (presidents day). Pass it on to sellers and buyers. tell them that ebay is shut down those days and dont bother. Give them alternative auction sites to go to. This monopoly must end!

RE: Auntie's

''The ''incentive: is here:

The problem is anonymous DSRs.  Why would the buyer leave a public negative when far more damage can be done by leaving a string of 1's in the seller's DSRs. According to ebay, every 1 star or 2 star rating left in a seller's DSR are now equal to a negative or neutral feedback.  In most circumstances, it would only take  3 or 4 purposely targeted transactions to knock a seller out of powerseller status.  And the seller wouldn't have a clue which ''customers'' were responsible.

eBay definition of Feedback Extortion. It should be noted that the buyer must demand goods or services in excess of the total amount of the item plus shipping in order to be considered Feedback Extortion.

Threatening to leave negative or neutral feedback for another member unless the other member provides goods or services not included in the original listing is not permitted.

Violations of this policy may result in a range of actions, including:

Listing cancellation

Limits on account privileges

Account suspension

Forfeit of eBay fees on cancelled listings

Loss of PowerSeller status

Some Examples of Feedback Extortion

''If you don’t include high performance tires and rims at no additional charge I will leave you negative feedback.”

''Pay me $100.00 or I will leave you negative feedback.''

''Sell me all of the items in the multiple item auction or I will get all of my friends to buy them and leave negative feedback''

Even the DSR is a joke.  I sell items that are sent digitally - immediately - no shipping and it's free and I still only have a 4.7 on shipping time and shipping price!!! People are idiots and the People at eBay are too!
