Upcoming Changes to Feedback on eBay

By: David Steiner

Feedback on eBay certainly has taken a few left turns since Pierre's initial concept that allowed trading partners to rate each other. In probably the most dramatic deviation, Sellers will no longer be allowed to leave Negative or Neutral feedback for Buyers. There are some other changes, which can be found here: http://pages.ebay.com/services/forum/new.html but this is the most interesting paragraph:

What changes are being made to the eBay Feedback system?

There are five key elements to the new Feedback system being introduced in the first half of 2008:

   1. Beginning in February, buyers and sellers will be able to earn up to one Feedback per week from the same trading partner. Today, members may only affect each other's Feedback scores one time, regardless of the number of transactions between the parties. This change will both encourage repeat transactions and reward good service.
   2. Sellers will no longer be able to leave negative or neutral Feedback for buyers. This change will occur in May, 2008.
   3. Removal of negative and neutral Feedback left by members who are suspended or who fail to respond to the Unpaid Item Process (UPI).
   4. Positive Feedback percentage will be based on the past 12 months of Feedback, rather than lifetime, since it is most indicative of the seller's recent performance.
   5. Restrictions on when Feedback can be left:
          * Buyers must wait three days before leaving negative or neutral Feedback
          * Instead of 90 days, members will be able to leave Feedback for 60 days

As a powerseller who pays ebay $2,000 a month in fees I have now calculated that I will be paying more than $2,500 with ebays new "lower" fees. This is a joke, right? I am going to put all my listings on other auction sites with a lower price and email all of our past customers telling them where to find us and to buy our products from these other auction sites for less. This new FB system is a joke and would also allow unscrupulous competitors to lower your fb score also. common sense and eBay do not belong in the same sentence. We would encourage all Sellers to do the same as we are and then and only then will you see eBay actually change for the better once the figure out that without product (sellers) it's hard to sell. Goodbye eBay.

Ya know, I wouldn't mind this change if eBay could assure me that they're going to protect us sellers from extortion and criminal behavior from scamming buyers.  I haven't heard anything from eBay on how they aim to protect sellers.  Sure, they talk up a storm about protecting the buyers, and that's necessary, too, but what about the sellers?  Are we supposed to smile and pay more fees while buyers scam us out of the rest of our pitiful profits?  Give us a break, eBay!  If you're not going to be "just a venue" then you need to address sellers' issues, too.

Another strategy:

Don't use Buy It Now and stipulate in every auction that the bid of any buyer who's left negative/neutral feedback for a seller will be cancelled and the buyer blocked.

Ebay gives us the right to make decisions about those we'll accept bids from. This only expands on that idea.

If ebay ends listings under their bogus "gratuitous comments" policy, then don't state it. Just the cancel the bid of any buyer who's left negative seller feedback and tell them why you did it.

:-)))))))

Ebay has not cared for the sellers for some time now.  This is the last straw.  I do not leave negative feedback unless one is given.  We need to be able to protect ourselves and not just get run over by everyone.

Maybe we should ALL close down and see how ebay feels.

Their VeRO program is also a bad site as they do not get both sides of a story, but just shut you down because a company says so.  You are guilty until proven not and that is not the right way to treat their sellers.  There is a proven ''First Sale Doctrine'' on the books in the courts that ebay and the companies ignore and we have to take the companies to court to protect ourselves and clear our names.

Ebay keeps raising fees and not making the sellers who pay them thru the nose feel like they are protected.  This will only cause a lot of us sellers to shut down.

EBAY WAKE UP!!!!!!

What many of the sellers don't understand is the new President is trying to get rid of the "small time" sellers on ebay and this just puts it one step closer.  He was quoted as saying he does not want ebay to be a flea market.  He wants all power sellers with new items only.  HOW MANY TIMES HAD HE USED EBAY BEFORE HE WAS HIRED?  THE ANSWER IS 0 (ZERO) HE NEVER EVEN LOGGED ON!  If you leave Ebay for a different forum they are not going to miss you!  They DO NOT care!  If you are not a power seller they can't wait to get rid of you anyway so go ahead and get moving.  You will not be able to pull enough sellers that will honestly, ban ebay for 24-48 hours to do any good anyway.  Good Luck to you all!  I hope ebay stocks take a big DUMP!

The new FB policy makes me want to throw up, as a buyer and a seller.

At least when sellers retaliated, you could see it and know not to buy from them.

They would be better off suspending sellers with 50 or more Mutual Withdrawals. That would get rid of the sellers who purposely leave retaliatory FB for the purpose of a Mutual Withdrawal. Those are the sellers Ebay should get rid of.

Now, Good sellers will leave and only the bad ones will stay, because they don't care anyway. :(

There is a PLUS here. I will now have 100% positive feedback again (99.8% now) I think we forget that most of our buyers are also sellers. Ive never had a negative from a buyer that also sells... Always those 0 folks. If there is a problem I work it out with the buyer. that is how its suppose to be. Why is ebay doing anything with it? Now they can leave me neg because they are mad at the boss, husband, wife, kids, postman or whoever crossed them that day. The seller wont have a chance to let other sellers know about the buyers issue. I see where some people who are crazy; leaving curse words and calling people loosers etc. But that just reflects back on Them. not their buyer or seller. It is up to us as sellers to determine if we want to do business with people with bad feedback. NOW we wont know who to block. Ive been faithful to ebay, patient, thinking they would work it out. Now I will have to pay more and get less. my avg sale price is 9.99 - 14.99 my listing cost will go down 5 cents woopie, and Ill pay .35 -65 cents more to sell. mmmm so why didnt they just leave the stores alone when they were working? My sales this last year were down 50-75% over any other year. I actually made more profit when I worked full time and only had about 20 items listed because people were here buying. Not much we can do, is there? I guess the Ebay Avenger had already read this when he said he got rid of meg and now he would get rid of ebay. ????

With the new policy of 1 FB per wekk counting from the same buyer, buyers can now purchase several items and then FB bomb a seller over the course of 90 days (1 negative FB per week) and they will all count. What are they thinking?????

The only people who like the new FB idea is scammers and those who want to ruin your good reputation.

It appears that eBay is intent on driving narcissistic small sellers and dreg sellers (the ones who levy outrageous shipping charges and give you crap packaging) away from the eBay plaform. Large sellers aren't phased a bit -- look at some of them with 1000s of monthly sales and 100s of negative FBs. They keep on selling 1000s of items each month, with virtually no impact from negative FB. Dreg sellers -- and anyone else who seeks to pad their shipping charges -- will now get hammered into the ground by buyers. That's a good thing.

After a long conversation with my Store rep, I have decided to stop selling on eBay.  Was it Easy?  No.  All the seller protections have been slowly and carefully eroded away.  The fraud that was supposed to be eliminated is running rampant.  Due to frequent changes to item specifics, My items have all disappeared off eBay Express.  I was told the solution would be to become a power seller.  Now how is that going to happen if no one can find me in the first place.  A very arrogant reply from an arrogant company.  Oh wait, not really a company...just a venue.  Goodbye eBay.

Ebay should replace all their execs with Disney characters instead.  I think they would do a much better job at running things.  Personally I think eBay's new President should be Elmer Fudd.

Another huge overlooked fact that eBay misses is who in fact their customers are. Us sellers are their customers not the buyers on eBay. We are the ones supporting the site by having products that our customers (the buyers) want. By continually biting the hand that feeds you they are primed for one of the worst takedowns in history. Sign us for the boycott but I beleive it should be for 2 straight days maybe Sunday Feb 17th and Monday Feb 18th for the boycott. those are 2 of the biggest sales day for listings and would provide more of a statement. I cant for the life of me think what was going on these executives brains when they were discussing these changes. Has any of these morons sold before? The safety systems are already in place for fraudulent purchases, etc with the use of credit cards or paypal. If they think this is going to change bad sellers scamming people they are nuts. Those sellers will just have you pay with a money order or personal check. Your only recourse then is filing with the local police in that seller's jurisdiction for justice. For a $10 or even a $100 item I doubt anyone or the police is going to do anything about it. if any one has eBay stock you better sell now as I smell the end of feeBay.

Amazing! How can Ebay screw up as often as they do? Fully 60-70% of all the negs I have ever received have been from buyers who never even sent any money for the item they were high bidder on!

Thank god Meg WHitman is gone though, she was an idiot who spent money like nuts on what...Skype??! Maybe the share price will start to rise after the market jitters have settled.

Crises are necessary to correct this kind of mismanagement

I think ebay should acquire Circe Du Sole since they seem to pretty good at running a circus.  Actually there is an uncanny parallel with eBay's Execs and the US Govt.  Both of these entities love screwing over the middle man! The rich get richer and the poor get a free ride.  That's like burning the candle at both ends and we're smack dab in the middle!

Absolute rubbish!  We have long known that the only people making REAL money on E-Bay is EBAY!!  As Gomer Pyle would say, ''Soo-prahze, Soo-prahze, Soo-prahze!''

So, in their warped thinking they somehow feel that lowering the seller listing fees is supposed to make up for lousy buyers being able to 'ding' us without fear of contradiction with the facts???  This makes the entire feedback system worse than worthless.  Why not just abandon it entirely, then??

There is simply nothing ladylike or printable to say about this move!
