Upcoming Changes to Feedback on eBay

By: David Steiner

Feedback on eBay certainly has taken a few left turns since Pierre's initial concept that allowed trading partners to rate each other. In probably the most dramatic deviation, Sellers will no longer be allowed to leave Negative or Neutral feedback for Buyers. There are some other changes, which can be found here: http://pages.ebay.com/services/forum/new.html but this is the most interesting paragraph:

What changes are being made to the eBay Feedback system?

There are five key elements to the new Feedback system being introduced in the first half of 2008:

   1. Beginning in February, buyers and sellers will be able to earn up to one Feedback per week from the same trading partner. Today, members may only affect each other's Feedback scores one time, regardless of the number of transactions between the parties. This change will both encourage repeat transactions and reward good service.
   2. Sellers will no longer be able to leave negative or neutral Feedback for buyers. This change will occur in May, 2008.
   3. Removal of negative and neutral Feedback left by members who are suspended or who fail to respond to the Unpaid Item Process (UPI).
   4. Positive Feedback percentage will be based on the past 12 months of Feedback, rather than lifetime, since it is most indicative of the seller's recent performance.
   5. Restrictions on when Feedback can be left:
          * Buyers must wait three days before leaving negative or neutral Feedback
          * Instead of 90 days, members will be able to leave Feedback for 60 days

This is the most ridiculous thing I have heard to date. Where is the sellers protection? If feedback is an opinion, how is this fair if I cannot leave an honest one?

Ask him if he ever worked in retail and if he has actual experience in dealing with buyers? Has he ever heard of the term 'shrinkage'? What protection is he going to provide for my goods against thieves and scammers to replace neg/neut. feedback?

Buyer feedback was kind of useless anyway.

Buyers could just dump a user ID and start a new one. The system has always been imbalanced.

Question:
Will this change seller behavior?
It won't change mine.

What about all those buyers that don't pay in a timely manner???  We should be able to "grade" the buyers on timely or slow payments. It is the sellers losing out and still have to pay those listing fees! Only eBay wins.

I too believe this isn't a good idea.  Unless I'm missing something, this concept offers little benefit to the seller & it seems sellers always get the short end of the stick.

This will only give buyers more room to whine and complain and hold seller's hostage.  In the last six months or so, I've seen more of that.  Threatening to leave poor feedback if I don't lower shipping, give free shipping, give partial refunds just because, etc.

This is absolutely ridiculous and you are going to lose many sellers if this actually goes into play.
Do you know how many scamming buyers there are out there? Buyers who do not contact seller first and don't want to work on a solution? Buyers with multiple IDs? Buyers who make cash backs on their credit cards? Buyers who pretend their item never came?
It is a bad and unfair idea and I would definately reconsider this absurd idea before Ebay goes down all together. Sellers will not stick around, we deal with enough nonsense and certainly do not need anymore!

Frankly, Instead of this garbage I'd rather they'd use DSR stars only. Without the ability for sellers to leave neg/neut feedback that part of the system is pointless.

I have nothing to share. I'm taking my sales elsewhere. Yes there are alternatives for what I sell.

Good for eBay's bottom line no doubt. Simply rediculous.

I'm not so sure the current system works. I ALWAYS ship within 24 hours yet I'm rated a 4.9 on shipping time. I charge $1 above actual shipping cost and I get a 4.8 for shipping cost? I should be able to rate the buyers for slow pay.

As a PowerSeller with a 3000 Positive FB rating at 100%, I work very hard to maintain this rating, often bending over backwords to satisfy customers, many of whom are unnecessarily cranky and rude. Most of my customers are pleasant and pay promptly, but a few know that I don't want to tarnish my 100% feedback and will complain just knowing they'll most likely get something out of it. My only leverage, as I see it, is being taken away from me. Although I rarely give a negative, and only on occasion give a neutral, I feel it is my duty to warn other sellers about customers who are just not worth the trouble and should be blocked. Now buyers can do whatever they like, demanding whatever makegoods, refunds, or worse that they can dream up, with no retribution. I thought eBay was trying to KEEP sellers?

This system will create an imbalance in the system. The buyer can say whatever they want, even if it is untrue. The seller has little chance of recieving positive feedback from a buyer.

I am a PowerSeller who will soon be selling on Amazon hopefully and leave eBay in the dust.  All eBay thinks about is the buyers with no regard to sellers whatsoever.  This new feedback decision really proves that.  Now we have absolutely no recourse for a truely bad experience with a buyer.  It is absolutely ridiculous.  How about buyers not being able to leave negatives when they are the ones that screwed up.  All that happens to sellers is pay more, pay more, pay more and we get nothing in return but more abuse.  I hope that these new increases and feedback changes will put an end to eBay who I believe HAS SEEN ITS DAY.  It's very difficult to sell anything anymore unless you are practically giving it away, I guess that is where the FVF will help.  I am very thankful to AuctionBytes for keeping us informed much faster and better than eBay.

Why would a seller ever leave any feedback again? It would serve no purpose whatsoever.  What some sellers shall have is a list of 5000 blocked bidders after they get 'shrinkage' on 5000 items, if they could possibly last that long.  I am one of the 10 year vets & I had already curtailed 90% of my eBay items about 6 months back and was waiting for this second shoe to drop. Looks like Meg bailed at the correct moment.

Let me get this straight. A competitor or angry customer can bid on and win my items, wait 3 days, then give me a negative feedback for no legitimate reason? Who was the genius at Ebay that thought this up. This is the most asinine thing I ever heard of. They have to realize this can't possibly work. Almost everything ebay changes is for the good of the buyers, when are the sellers going to get some sort of protection against some of the nut cases that bid on our stuff? I am getting real fed up with this crap.

Ebay has become in increasingly hostile site to sell on.

Buyers who leave negative feedback because they are unreasonable to deal with, can effectively shut down a seller.  A seller can not respond with their set of facts.

Without free expression of each parties viewpoint, it leaves the whole system imbalanced.

How are sellers suppose to protect themselves from this?  How are we suppose to keep selling when we do nothing but worry about the feedback and the fact that buyers have free reign on our business?

That kind of stress will lead many sellers, myself included, to find other venues to sell in.

It will no longer be profitable to list on Ebay.

Well if I ever needed a reason to stop selling on greedbay this is it. Yes buyers can leave what the please, and why should a seller even bother leaving feedback in future.

The level playing field of greedBay is finally murdered in it's sleep, and may the competition prosper.
